‘Outer Banks’ Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who Killed Wes Genrette?

Published

The Pogues in Outer Banks season 4 once again found themselves to be a part of a treasure hunt. After everything that happened in season 3, they wanted to settle down and live a normal life, but fate had other plans for them. They were approached by a man named Wes Genrette at the end of season 3, who wanted their help in finding Blackbeard’s treasure. The Pogues had made some bad business decisions, and they were short on money. They decided to seize the opportunity that came their way, not knowing what they had signed up for. So, let’s find out what happened in Part 1’s ending, and what we could expect from Part 2.

Spoiler Alert

Who killed Wes Genrette?

In the third episode of Outer Banks season 4, part 1, we saw that Sheriff Shoupe went to his office and looked at some newspaper clippings from back in the day. He had earlier found the dead body of a man (referred to as The Sandman by the coroner), and he was told that Wes Genrette had been killed in exactly the same manner. So that meant that it was the same person who’d killed both Wes and the unknown man. Now Wes was quite adamant about the fact that the ghost of Elizabeth, whose wife was Blackbeard, haunted his family. When the Pogues visited Wes for the first time, he told them that it was their ancestors who killed both Blackbeard and Elizabeth. It was hard for the Pogues to believe that theory, but still, they started their investigation in hopes of finding the amulet and getting paid in return. During his last moments, we saw that Wes felt the eerie presence of a supernatural entity, and the next day, the news came out in the open that he had been murdered. There might be some supernatural entity that was haunting the family, but to believe that Wes was killed by a ghost seems a little far-fetched as of now because if the ghost targeted only the Genrette family, then why did it kill the man whose body was found in the sand? But you never know; the writers might surprise us. In my personal opinion, I feel that Wes’s son-in-law, Chandler, had something to do with his death, though nothing was revealed till the end of season 4, part 1.

What did Wes Genrette mention in his letter to JJ?

Through archived newspaper clippings, we got to know that, back in the day, after Larissa Genrette’s death, Chandler Groff was exonerated of all charges. In another clipping, it was mentioned that Larissa and her boy had both died, and it was presumed that the former had taken both their lives. Now, just before Wes died under mysterious circumstances, he wrote a letter to JJ for some unknown reasons. JJ couldn’t read it because of the cursive style of writing, and that’s when he went to find his father, as he thought that his old man would be able to help him. In the previous episodes, we saw that Luke Maybank had escaped from the island as he was a wanted man. JJ knew that Barracuda Mike could probably help him locate his father, as he was his father’s friend, and JJ had a feeling that they were still working together in secret. JJ was right, as Luke was hiding in Mike’s residence all that while. He stayed low because he didn’t want to be put behind bars. JJ showed the letter to Luke, and the latter read it out to him. He had written in his letter that JJ needed to talk to his father and learn the meaning of “albatross.”

Before Luke could tell JJ what the word albatross meant, Sheriff Shoupe, who had been tracking his movements, arrived at the scene. JJ and Luke had to escape from there, and they went and hid in a nearby lighthouse. That’s when the greatest revelation of Season 4 was made, and we learned that JJ was not the real son of Luke. He told him that Albatross was the name of the boat on which Larissa Genrette lost her life. He also revealed to JJ that Larissa was his real mother, and it meant that her biological father was none other than Chandler Groff. So basically, back in the day, nobody came to know that Larissa’s child had survived, which is why every newspaper reported that both mother and child lost their lives. Also, another revelation that was made at the end of Part 1 was that Chandler and Hollis Robinson knew each other from before, and they were working together. Hollis had taken money from Rafe for a real estate project to be built on Wes’ property, and Sofia, Rafe’s girlfriend, felt that she was going to run away with his money. But I believe that the truth was not so simple. Hollis and Chandler were not merely after Rafe’s money, they were planning something else.

Was Pope able to locate Blackbeard’s Blue Crown?

Pope overheard Lightner and Dalia (the mysterious woman who seemed like a ganglord), and he got to know that they were not after the amulet but a priceless artifact named the Blue Crown. The Pogues found out together that the Blue Crown was created for Darius the Great of Persia, and it was said that whoever owned it would become invincible. It was said that it made people’s wishes come true like a genie. Also, there was something inscribed in a foreign language on the amulet that they found. John B went to his father’s friend, as he believed that the man might help them decode the inscription. John B got to know that it was a sort of riddle where Blackbeard had mentioned a north moon, a half star and a place where the dead and the living met and that there was supposed to be a gatekeeper there who would show them the way. It didn’t make any sense at first. But then, on further research, Pope found out that there was a place in Charleston where Blackbeard landed and where they could probably find some hidden clues. Pope, John B, Sarah, and Cleo went to Charleston while Kiara stayed back as she wanted to wait for JJ, who was stuck on the lighthouse with Luke, to arrive. Pope found it extremely unusual that while Blackbeard was being hunted by the British Royal Army, he could find the time to bury his cook and his navigator. That led the Pogues to believe that he had probably hidden something in their coffin. That finding led them to a nearby church, and the moment they reached there, Sarah noticed that there was a glass painting on the church tower of a North Star. Pope and Sarah went inside a crypt beneath the altar while Cleo waited outside to keep watch. John B went to the graveyard to find where the Navigator and the Cook were buried.

The tunnel beneath the altar led to a hidden room beneath the church premises that hadn’t been opened in years. We got to know at the end of Outer Banks season 4, part 1, that there was another way to enter the secret room, through the Navigator’s grave. Dalia and Lightner had also deciphered the riddle, and they used the amulet to unlock the grave and enter the crypt from there. Dalia and Lightner took a scroll from the Navigator’s coffin, while Sarah and Pope hid there and watched them in silence. Dalia and Lightner left after they got what they wanted, while Pope and Sarah got locked inside the crypt. Pope accidentally shut off the first entrance from where they had entered, and the second one was locked by Dalia once she came out. Cleo saw Lightner, and she pounced on him as she wanted to take revenge for the death of Terrance. Lightner got the better of her, but he left her alive as some bystanders saw him hurting the poor girl, and then Dalia asked him to leave before the police arrived. Cleo asked John B to go after Lightner and Dalia, but he, too, wasn’t able to catch hold of him. John B had a gun in his hand, and he could have shot them, but he couldn’t since his past came flashing before his eyes. He remembered the time when his father killed someone in front of his eyes, and he still hadn’t moved on from that incident. So, in the end, Pope and Sarah were stuck inside the crypt; John B and Cleo were on the church premises, having no clue that their friends were stuck; JJ was on the run with his adoptive father; and lastly, Kiara was impatiently waiting for JJ, not knowing when he would return.

What will happen in Part 2?

The first part of Outer Banks season 4 left us on a cliffhanger where the fates of all the Pogues were hanging in the balance. As for part 2, it is extremely important for John B. and Cleo to help their friends escape from the crypt, as it is going to overflow with water. Dalia and Lightner have the Navigator’s scroll with them, which takes them a step closer to the blue crown. I feel that Dalia and Lightner are working for Chandler and Hollis. Also, I believe that Chandler had some role to play in Larissa’s and Wes’ deaths, and probably, he was the one who killed that man whose body was found in the sand. Maybe that’s why when Wes was writing a letter to JJ, he didn’t want Chandler to be around. Part 2 will also reveal if the entire story of a curse upon the Genrette family was true or not. We believed that it was true, as it was his ancestors who had mercilessly killed Blackbeard and his wife back in the day. Also, Rafe, in all probability, will come to know about what Sofia had done behind his back. She had taken money from Hollis to influence Rafe to make a deal with her. Sofia’s motives behind doing so were very different, but the damage had been done, and her guilt will probably make her confess to Rafe in Part 2. I believe the Pogues will be able to defy the odds at the end, and they will find the blue crown before Chandler and his hired guns do. It won’t be an easy task for them, but then they were never afraid to take on challenges head-on and make their own way.
