In the previous season of Outer Banks, we saw that the Pogues risked their lives and found the treasure of El Dorado. In the process, Big John ended up losing his life, and even Ward sacrificed his life for the sake of her daughter. JJ, John B, Kiara, Sarah, Pope, and Cleo came back safely with gold from El Dorado in their possessions. They wanted to leave the life of adventure behind and not get involved in any sort of treasure hunting. But call it destiny or fate, things didn’t go out as they would have liked, and they felt compelled to go on a mission to find a hidden treasure once again. So let’s take a quick recap of what happened in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 and if the Pogues were able to make any sort of breakthrough.
Spoiler Alert
What happened after the Pogues arrived at the Outer Banks?
The Pogues brought the gold to the Outer Banks, and then they were able to sell it off at a fair price. They got excited when they saw their joint account flooded with money, and they just couldn’t stop imagining what they could do with it. But then Pope told them that instead of everybody taking their own share and spending it recklessly, they should pool the amount and spend it in a manner through which the sum gets exponentially multiplied in the future. They decided to buy JJ’s house, but his impulsiveness during the auction did not help their cause. They ended up paying 33 percent more than the market value for the property, and Pope and others were not happy about it. They went into damage control mode, and they constructed JJ Maybank Sea Charter aka Poguelandia 2.O, spending as little as they could. They were not making as much profit as they would have liked, and all the damages incurred due to natural causes added to their losses. In the end, they were left with literally nothing, and none of them had any clue how to go about the situation. But then a miracle happened, and the Outer Banks Sentinel, a local newspaper, mentioned their treasure hunt in El Dorado. A team of archaeologists had validated their findings, and overnight, the Pogues became local heroes. They were facilitated by the authorities, and that’s where they met Wes Genrette, who told them about Blackbeard’s treasure. With nothing to lose and no plans in sight, the Pogues decided to take a chance and hear out Wes’ offer.
How did the Pogues get to know about Blackbeard?
Now Wes Genrette asked them to come to Blackgate, his residence, as he wanted to have a talk with them in person. They met Wes’s son-in-law there, named Chandler Groff, who was also a part of the negotiation. Wes told a story that, at that moment, felt too good to be true. Wes told them that he was a direct descendant of Francis Genrette, who was a member of the British military back in the day and who was responsible for the deaths of Blackbeard and his wife Elizabeth. Wes said that since that day, a curse had fallen on their family, and the ghost of Elizabeth made sure that every member of the house met with their fateful end accompanied by extreme brutality. Wes told the Pogues to bring him the amulet of Blackbeard that was, in all, probably still lying in his ship. Wes offered the Pogues a sum of $50,000 in return. The Pogues found it hard to believe that any such thing could have happened, and I mean, who would in the real world? But then they came to the decision that there was no harm in checking out the wreckage of Blackbeard’s ship that lay in the deep waters. So JJ and Kiara went inside the water, while John B and Pope stayed on the boat and waited for them. Another twist came in the scheme of things after JJ and Kiara finally found Blackbeard’s boat. An unknown diver was at the same spot, and he was also searching for the amulet. He attacked JJ and Kiara, but somehow, they managed to escape with the amulet. There was an inscription on that amulet, and through that, the Pogues figured out that the amulet was not actually the treasure that Wes was after. The amulet was a sort of key that led to another treasure, i.e., a priceless artifact called the Blue Crown, that had been in the possession of some great rulers like Alexander and Darius the Great of Persia. The Pogues wanted to reach out to Wes and ask him about it, but before they could do that, the latter died in mysterious circumstances.
What were Chandler’s real intentions?
Now, since the beginning of Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1, we realized that Chandler Groff was up to something. He had a very mysterious aura, and it felt as if he was hiding something. Wes was judicious enough not to trust his son-in-law, and so just before he was killed, he wrote a letter to JJ and asked his loyal housekeeper to give it to the latter in case anything happened to him. JJ got the letter, and he instantly knew that he needed to find his father and seek his help. He thought so because, firstly, his father’s name was mentioned in the letter, and secondly, JJ couldn’t read Wes’ cursive handwriting that well. JJ went to Barracuda Mike, and that’s when he realized that his father had been hiding there since the beginning. Luke, JJ’s father, read the letter to him, and he learned that something called the Albatross held the key to the mystery. After the father-son duo escaped from Mike’s place before Detective Shoupe could catch hold of them, Luke revealed some things to JJ that he was not ready to hear. Firstly, Luke said that JJ was not his biological son. JJ couldn’t gulp down the fact, and he felt numb from within. Another secret that Luke told his son was that he was Larissa Genrette’s son, which meant that Wes was his maternal grandfather and Chandler Groff was his father. Now, I believe that Chandler had tried to kill his wife back in the day, and he, in all probability, knew that JJ was his son. Maybe it was Chandler who handed JJ over to his adoptive parents, though why he did that is still unknown. I might be wrong, but it felt like Lightner and Dalia, the other group who was after Blakcbeard’s treasure, were working for Chandler. Maybe Chandler and Wes had different opinions on the treasure. Maybe Chandler would have wanted to use it for his own vested interest, and Wes would have wanted to dispose of it and get rid of the curse. Whatever the reality was, Chandler had played them all, and he was planning his next move while the Pogues were stuck in a life-or-death situation.
What happened between Rafe and Sofia?
Then, there was another character introduced in this season, a woman named Hollis, who approached Rafe to get him to invest in her real estate project that was supposed to come up on Wes Genrette’s property. Now Rafe had his doubts about the woman, and he had a hunch that she might betray his trust. Rafe loved Sofia, but for him, it was still hard to accept that she was his girlfriend. One time, he was having a chat with Topper and Ruthie, and he spoke about how a Pogue could never be his life partner. Sofia overheard that conversation, and she felt shattered. She went back to her home, where, coincidentally, her father told her to convince Rafe to make that deal with Hollis. Now Hollis had helped Sofia’s family financially, and Sofia’s father felt indebted to her. Sofia didn’t want to do that at first, but when she heard what Rafe told his friends, she decided to take revenge on him. Sofia went and met Hollis, and she agreed to help her cause in return for some money. Rafe agreed at the end and made the deal. After making the deal, Rafe went to Sofia and expressed his feelings to her, telling her how he wanted to settle with her. Sofia felt extremely guilty, and she told Rafe that she didn’t feel that it was the right move for him to invest his money in Hollis’ project. But the damage had already been done, and the money had already been transferred. Another twist that came at the end of Season 4 Part 1 was that Hollis was working together with Chandler, and there was a reason she had her eyes on Wes’ estate. I believe she knew about the treasure from the very beginning, and laying a trap for Rafe was one of the things Chandler and she planned together.
Did the Pogues find Blackbeard’s treasure?
Pope was adamant about finding more clues that led them to Blackbeard’s treasure. There was an Arabic inscription on the amulet through which the Pogues got to know that they had to find a north star and a half moon in a place, and Blackbeard mentioned that this is where the living and the dead collided. The writers in the entries also spoke about a gatekeeper who was supposed to show them the way. Pope, after his in-depth research, came to the conclusion that the place they were looking for was in Charleston, where Blackbeard had made a stop while he was on the run. The Pogues also learned about what Blackbeard and Elizabeth endured back in the day. Blackbeard was a Robin Hood of sorts who’d rescued Elizabeth from enslavement, and while he was on the run together with her, his Navigator and Cook met their fateful end. Pope found it extremely weird when he got to know Blackbeard had the time to bury the dead even though the British forces were after his life. John B speculated that the graves of the two men probably had something of value in them. After reaching Charleston, the Pogues searched for a church, and they found one with an emblem of the North Star on its main tower. Pope knew, intuitively, that there would be a crypt where he would find all the secrets. Meanwhile, Dalia and Lightner, who were after the treasure at the very beginning, arrived at the same spot, and they seemed to know the way to the hidden artifact in the crypt. They used the amulet that they had taken from Cleo and Pope back in the day to unlock the Navigator’s grave and went inside to procure a scroll from his coffin. Pope and Sarah, on the other hand, used the second entrance, which was under the altar, to enter the crypt. Pope and Sarah realized that there was someone inside the crypt, and they saw Lightner and Dalia taking the scroll and leaving with it. When Dalia and Lightner came out, Cleo saw and chased them. Terrace had sacrificed his life to save Cleo after Lightner had captured her. Cleo wanted to avenge the death of a man who was a father figure for her. Cleo would have been killed by Lightner, but luckily, a few passersby saw him assaulting the girl and threatened to call the police. John B went after Dalia and Lightner, but the ghost of his past life once again came to haunt him. John B wanted to shoot them, but he wasn’t able to pull the trigger as visions from his past when his father killed someone, came in front of his eyes.
At the end of the 5th episode of Outer Banks Season 2 Part 1, Pope and Sarah were stuck inside the crypt. Water started flowing inside the crypt, and Pope realized that in no time, it would get flooded. The Pogues were stuck in a difficult situation, and they needed to defy the odds to overcome the conflicts that came their way. In season 4, part 2, we will get to know if the Pogues are able to find Blackbeard’s treasurer before Dalia and Lightner get their hands on it or not.
