‘Outer Banks’ Season 4 Part 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Is JJ Dead Or Alive?

Published

Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger where it was revealed that JJ was not actually Luke’s son. JJ couldn’t digest the fact that Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette were his real parents, and for some reason, Groff had handed him over to Luke. Moreover, John B and others had no clue where to look for the Blue Crown. At the end of Part 2, we saw that Dalia and her team had been able to find the scroll that was hidden in the catacomb. Sarah and Pope got stuck inside the tunnel, but fortunately, John B. and Cleo were able to arrive just at the right time and save their lives. So, let’s find out if the Pogues were able to locate the hidden treasure or not.

Spoiler Alert

Why didn’t Shoupe arrest JJ?

In Season 4 Part 2, the Pogues were told that the house that they had bought at the auction didn’t belong to them. They were informed that there was an injunction in place and that the bank was not authorized to conduct an auction. The Pogues, especially those whose houses were located at Roger Point Road, got really angry during the community meeting. JJ, as always, couldn’t resist his impulse, and he went on a rampage. He vandalized public property, as he was just done with everything. The police issued a warrant against him, but somehow he managed to escape. At one point in time, it felt like he would be caught by the law enforcement authorities, but Pope intervened, assaulted a police officer, and made sure that JJ had enough time to escape. JJ was reunited with the others, and they went to a nearby island together. Shoupe came after them and, after chasing them for quite some time, finally got hold of them. Just when Shoupe was going to arrest them, Rafe came out of nowhere. He told Shoupe that JJ was not the one who had murdered Hollis Robinson. Shoupe knew that Chandler Groff was the big prize. He knew that JJ had not committed any crime and that he’d only been framed for things that Groff did. When Rafe told Shoupe that the Pogues were his only chance to catch Chandler Groff, he couldn’t resist his impulse and decided to back them. Shoupe let the Pogues leave on the condition that they would bring Groff back.

What did Chandler Groff do with JJ?

JJ in season 4, part 1, got to know that Groff was his biological father; he couldn’t believe it, but eventually, he realized that that was the truth. Now, JJ confronted Groff at a time when Dalia and her gang (known as Lupine Corsairs) were after him. Groff denied every claim that JJ made at first; but when he realized that he would need JJ’s help to save his life, he accepted the truth. The fact that his own father did not accept the truth should have been reason enough for him to not trust Groff. But JJ was hopeful, and for the first time in his life, he took the chance to trust somebody. Chandler Groff broke JJ’s trust in ways that the latter could have never imagined. JJ and Chandler Groff both got caught by the Lupine Corsairs gang. Back in the day, Dalia had trusted Chandler and made him a part of her plan. Chandler knew about Blackbeard and the Blue Crown, but he didn’t have the means and resources to do anything about it.

Had it not been for Dalia and her gang, Groff wouldn’t have been able to do anything. But still, considering the greedy man that he was, he betrayed their trust, and they were not ready to forgive him for doing that. Dalia would have killed both of them, but JJ’s friends arrived just at the right time and saved their lives. Nobody knew it, but secretly, Chandler Groff had made a deal with Dalia. He’d told her that if she left him alive, then he would bring back the scroll that she had retrieved from the catacombs in Part 1. Chandler Groff pretended to be a man who wanted to redeem himself. He told JJ how guilty he felt for not being there for his kid. JJ was also influenced by his cunning words, and for the first time, he let his guard down. Chandler Groff killed Hollis Robinson, took all the money that Rafe had given her, and then told JJ to escape with him. He gave JJ the false impression that they would both go to search for the hidden treasure. Earlier, he had gone to his wife’s grave to get that rare gem through which the map could be decoded. When JJ saw his mother’s dead body in the coffin for the first time, he realized that the cause of her death wasn’t drowning. JJ even asked Groff how she had died, but the latter very shrewdly changed the topic and didn’t give JJ a clear answer. Groff took Hollis’ boat after killing her, and then once he was in the deep waters, he pushed JJ into the ocean to die, who got severely injured from a sharpened edge of the boat. Luckily, JJ’s friends arrived just in time and saved his life.

Were the Pogues able to find the Blue Crown?

In Outer Banks season 4’s ending, the Pogues somehow reached Essaouira, Morocco. The journey wasn’t easy, and had it not been for JJ, Sarah would have drowned as she fell from the ship during the journey. JJ risked his life, jumped from the ship, and made sure that both of them came ashore safely. Just moments before Sarah fell from the ship, John B had had an argument with JJ, and he got very disappointed in his friend.

JJ was not in the best possible state at that point in time, and he wasn’t ready to listen to anybody. John B had just realized that he was going to be a father, and he wanted JJ to be the godfather of his baby. JJ just lashed out at John B, as he was not in his senses. Later, when JJ saved Sarah, John B let bygones be bygones and reconciled with him. Rafe and the other Pogues separated from each other once they reached Morocco. Rafe went after Chandler Groff. Rafe could have killed the man as soon as he saw him, but he decided to give him another chance. But Chandler didn’t show any signs of improvement. He once again tried to attack Rafe, and as a result, he fell into the well in the middle of nowhere. While the Pogues and Rafe managed to find the place where the Blue Crown was hidden, Chandler also came out of the well. JJ managed to find the Blue Crown, and he couldn’t imagine that he had actually successfully completed the mission.

In part 2’s ending, another twist came that changed things for the Pogues. Chandler got hold of Kiara, and he threatened JJ to give him the Blue Crown if he wanted his girlfriend to stay alive. JJ had realized that it was his people that made him happy. He realized that he didn’t want money or any other materialistic possessions more than he needed his friends. He gave the Blue Crown to his father and asked him to leave Kiara. Chandler let Kiara live, but he stabbed JJ as he had betrayed him and not helped him climb out of the well. Chandler, in that moment, proved that he was a heartless man and a crook who had no feelings whatsoever. He had killed his wife, his father-in-law, and now even his son. Kiara sat there holding JJ’s dead body, and the poor girl felt numb. Soon, John B and the others reached there, and they too were devastated to find that JJ was no more. In the quest to find the hidden treasure, the Pogues had lost everything. They didn’t have a house, they’d lost their best friend, and they didn’t know where to go or what to do.

What’s next for John B and his gang?

Kiara, John B, and the others sat there without saying a word to each other. All of a sudden, Kiara spoke, and she made it very clear that she was not going to let Chandler Groff off so easily. Her rationale was very simple: she told her group that had anything happened to them, then JJ wouldn’t have left the perpetrator alive. So basically, one of the major plots of Outer Banks season 5 would be that the Pogues would go hunting for Groff, and they wouldn’t stop until they avenged the deaths of their friends. Moreover, once they get the Blue Crown, they have to make sure that the Lupine Corsairs don’t come after them. They were mercenaries who didn’t care about anything, and they were ready to sacrifice their own people if it benefited their cause. Also, Sarah was pregnant, and I don’t think she would be able to actively take part in the mission, and even if she does, John B would have to make sure that she did not exert herself. One thing is for sure: the Pogues are not going to leave Groff alive, though it would be interesting to see if they are able to go back to Poguelandia and live the lives they, and especially JJ, had always dreamt of leading.
