Palm Royale season 2 has finally ended, and it’s made me sad, but also the happy ending certainly has me quite optimistic for another season. Having said that, though, it’s an ending that definitely feels more final than we might’ve expected. The big villains have been defeated, Maxine’s finally able to be happy, and Robert, too. Evelyn might finally realize the value Maxine brings to her life. Everyone’s friends, and Perry is the mayor, which means everything is going to be perfect at Palm Beach, but would that mean no more drama on our favorite campy retro Apple TV drama? Well, no, not at all. Sure, the bigger fish have been fried, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more, no? I did say in my recap of episode 10 that it feels like the show has given us a fitting conclusion in case it doesn’t come back for a 3rd season. By this I mean, even if it’s a final-final episode, we won’t be left wondering about a lot of major things in the show, which I quite appreciate. However, this makes me worry in case we do get another season. Since nothing is confirmed yet, we’ll just have to wait to find out, but until then, let’s come up with some theories for what might be coming our way soon.
Spoiler Alert
Douglas, The Big Villain
Palm Royale is a campy feminist show about housewives realizing that they don’t need men to survive the world. Maxine is the best example of this; what she doesn’t realize is that she’s doing it all while still desperately wanting a happy life with Douglas. But finally, after everything that went down with Mitzi, and Douglas changing his mind after realizing he was dying and proposing that Maxine wait for him for 18 more years (because aspirin is supposed to save him from a young death?). This leaves her super sour, and she finally opens up to Douglas about how he means nothing to her, and he needs to get his act together to give them both the happy lives they want. Douglas thinks they’re not happy anymore because Maxine isn’t a smiling wife waiting for him when he comes home from a long day of work. That’s the thing he believes would make him the happiest. He also says marrying Mitzi would be wrong because marriage is “important” and it’s not something to play around with. Ironically, that’s what he did with Maxine.
Maxine tells him this and walks away from him, because their marriage is forever done, and also the little love left in her for him is gone forever. However, this means Douglas now feels like he needs revenge. To make matters worse, we don’t know where he disappears off to after Maxine marries Robert. This means he’s going to come back with a vengeance. And though he might be the stupidest character on the show, there’s a chance he’ll find a way to reclaim the baby fortune, even if it doesn’t technically belong to him. Either way, he will come for Maxine.
Linda And Norma
In the ending of Palm Royale season 2, we get proof that Norma, well, Agnes is basically another version of Maxine, and they should’ve actually gotten along and worked together instead of against each other. The baby fund obviously went to Norma, too, as she requested Maxine earlier for some help, and Maxine is a good person. Now she’s got a nice posse for herself with all the women of Palm Beach. She’s basically a ringleader, which means if she gets in trouble, her girl gang will come to help her, of course. In this case, now that Linda and Norma are set to lead regular lives after their many adventures together, they might return to Palm Beach to join the other women.
The Mole
The plotline with the mole is the most interesting thing about the show that’s left unanswered. Everything else has been sorted out, and I think, from my understanding (but correct me if I’m wrong), Marjorie is the mole, and that means Palm Beach still has a Russian mole and Pinky and Raquel are still working with her, especially since they now have immunity from the FBI. This might be the big storyline next season, and the show might lean more into the political side of things, especially since Dinah will be more involved, considering Perry’s the mayor now.
Evelyn and Maxine
If I have it right, Evelyn and Maxine are friends again, which means Maxine’s got a stake in the Palm Royale again? In the ending of the show, they‘re singing about fulfilling their dreams together, and they look happy and like besties. Plus, Evelyn is now free and independent, which means she doesn’t have to stress about anything else and can genuinely work together with Maxine to be rich and happy, no? Already, we saw a major development in this relationship, but I think we might finally get to see an actual friendship like in this final episode.
Rafael and Robert
But the biggest mystery of all at the end of season 2 is why is Rafael so weird? Okay, I’m half-kidding, but this young boy is already so strange. To add to that, in episode 10, we see him act mysteriously on the phone. There’s a chance he’s not even Robert’s son, but if that’s the case, the whole money situation could get really messed up, too. Do you think he’s lying about who he is? Or do you think someone sent him to spy? But if so, what would sweet Robert need spying on for? Maybe because he’s believed to be a war hero?
Additionally, I think Ann and Virginia will be more eager to solve their own mystery of who the mole is, and they’re going to need all the help they can get. Maxine and her gang have got their work cut out for them.
