‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained: Is Chris Dead?

Published

The thing is, no one can truly understand the emotional pain Christopher Smith, aka Chris, is going through. He spent his entire life trying to please his dad and earn his love. He just wanted his old man to feel proud of him, to see his son as a superhero, but Auggie always looked down on him, at least in this reality, and therefore, in the end, Chris was left with no option but to shoot his dad and end his tyranny. But you know it’s not that simple. You can’t just erase people from your life. Those memories keep haunting you as long as you are alive, and the way to get rid of the painful past is to replace it with something better. And that’s what Chris was looking for. [Spoiler Alert] In the ending of Peacemaker season 2, episode 1, Chris came across a parallel reality, where his father, Auggie, and brother, Keith, were still alive. In this reality, Auggie didn’t hate his younger son, because he didn’t blame him for Keith’s death, and you can see how that singular event made all the difference in the trio’s life. In this reality, Chris didn’t grow up around a bitter or toxic father. Here, Auggie was more chill and loving, something our Chris never got to experience in his lifetime. And honestly, that was the life the original Chris had always been searching for, and when he came across this parallel reality, he couldn’t look away. It was all he ever wanted, but there’s always a “but.” This new reality had a Chris of its own. I guess Chris 2 was nothing like our Chris. He was more pampered, more narcissistic, and less understanding. He had a different taste in music, and in this reality, he even had a girlfriend, none other than Harcourt. I know Keith 2 pointed out that they had broken up, but that still counts, right? And I am sure Chris 1 really felt envious the moment he saw that photograph of Chris 2 and Harcourt 2 together. But before Chris 1 could process all this new information, Chris 2 returned from Blüdhaven, and pointed his gun at the strange man who looked exactly like him. Chris 2 believed it was a shapeshifter, which meant even he, his father, and Auggie weren’t exactly aware that their quantum unfolding storage area could open doors to parallel realities as well. Nevertheless, Chris 1 decided to run away from there, back to the quantum storage area, but Chris 2 followed him into it to find answers.

Chris 1 Killed Chris 2

Well, our Chris didn’t exactly want to kill Chris 2, but the latter left him with no other option. Chris 2 was going to kill him, and Chris 1 had to stop him somehow to save his own life. In the final scene of the episode, Chris 1 activated Chris 2’s jetpack, which flew him straight into the pointy structure on the roof. Chris 2 didn’t survive the impact, and he died in Chris 1’s arms. But wait a moment. What does this mean for Chris 1? Will he let the matter go and go back to his original reality? Heck no. There’s no fun in that, right?

Chris 1 has already seen how perfect Chris 2’s life is. He has a father, a brother, an ex-girlfriend, and so many cool gadgets and suits. He’s not going to feel any remorse for killing “himself.” Plus, it was self-defense. I am sure Chris 1 will have millions of reasons to justify Chris 2’s death, and with him gone, he most likely will be stepping into his life, but you see, that’s where the real trouble begins. The brief interaction between Auggie 2, Keith 2, and Chris 1 was suggestive of the fact that the folks in the new reality had a different set of memories, which Chris 1 wasn’t aware of. And Auggie 2 and Keith 2, sooner or later, will point out that Chris has been acting very strangely lately. Maybe they too will suspect him of being a shapeshifter who either kidnapped their Chris 2 or killed him, and they will lock him up or torture him to reveal his secret. In short, Chris 1 is going to be caught, but the more important question here is, who’s going to save him when that happens? Will it be his friends from the original reality, who have been keeping an eye on him?

Chris 1 Will Eventually Find The Cracks

I think the show’s message in the end is going to be “all that glitters is not gold,” or something like that. Chris 1 was intrigued by this new reality because of the things he had seen from a distance. But the devil is in the details, right? Once you start living someone’s life, when you put yourself in their shoes, that’s when you find out that their life isn’t any less messy than your own. Nothing is perfect in life, and at the end of the day, you just have to make “peace” with what life throws at you. And Chris is going to have a similar realization by the end of the show. He may have never had the father he always wanted, but he had friends who couldn’t be replaced. Chris 2 wasn’t a part of Task Force X, nor did he team up with supercool folks like Economos and Adebayo to stop an alien invasion. So, there’s always a different side to any story, which we “onlookers” fail to notice until we look closely. Maybe that’s why all those self-help books tell us to count our gifts instead of comparing our lives to others. So in the end, Chris 1 will have to decide whether he wants to play the part of a superhero with his father and brother, aka “The Top Trio,” which I believe is nothing but a hoax, or if he’ll save the world with his friends and be a superhero in the truest sense. He cannot have his cake and eat it too, and this decision will undoubtedly be difficult for him. Whatever he chooses, it will go on to define what kind of a man he truly is: someone who rolls with the punches or a loser who hits the reset button whenever the going gets tough.

Chris 1 Will Bring Harcourt 1 To This New Reality

I know Chris has always been quite self-centered, mostly thinking about himself, but after his father’s death, he’s really trying to be a better person, which means he now cares about others too. So, it’s possible that Chris, while adjusting to this new reality, will remember Harcourt 1 and ask her to come to the parallel reality with him so she can start over. In the original reality, Amanda Waller has had her blacklisted from all intelligence agencies, which means she cannot find a job in the line of work she’s best at. Hence, Chris 1 will bring her to the new reality, where her life hasn’t been ruined by Amanda, so she can do what she wants to. So she no longer has to pick bar fights to numb her emotional pain. But like I said earlier, this won’t end nicely for either of them. I mean, this new conflict could bring them closer and make Harcourt realize that she needs to be more vocal about her feelings, but you already know that.

Rick Flag Sr. Will Follow Chris To The End Of The World

I think we all know why Rick Flag Sr. is so obsessed with Peacemaker. Yes, he killed his son, Rick Flag Jr., at the end of The Suicide Squad. However, at the time, he wasn’t in a position to do much about it, because he was a simple soldier taking orders from Amanda Waller. But with Amanda removed from her position, Rick has been given a promotion and made the director of ARGUS, which means that he now has the power and the resources to take his revenge on Peacemaker. Rick is looking for just one excuse to either put Chris back in prison or kill him, just like Chris killed his son. In short, he won’t let Peacemaker be in peace as long as he is alive, which means there’s a possibility that there will be a confrontation between the two by the end of season 2 in which one of them will die, likely Rick. But I am getting ahead of myself. As of now, Rick has finally found a good reason to keep an eye on Chris, and he’s going to follow him wherever he goes.

The moment Chris opened his father’s quantum unfolding storage area, it sent an anomalous signal, similar to Lex Luthor’s Pocket Dimension from the 2025 Superman movie. It’s interesting, right? I mean, that these two can be connected somehow. And if that happens, Auggie’s quantum storage area will have a larger role to play in the newly created DCU. Also, if it wasn’t obvious, the events of Peacemaker season 2 take place after the events of Superman, so we can expect more meta-humans from DC Comics to make an appearance, and this time, they are here to stay. Wrapping up, these are my thoughts on the ending of the first episode of season 2 but do let me know what you think about it.
