‘Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel’ Ending Explained & Series Recap: Was Hidayet A Witch Or An Alien?

Published

Netflix’s Turkish series, Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel, is centered around a boutique hotel located in Alacati run by Nezahat and her two daughters. After her husband’s death, Nezahat took it upon herself to maintain the Blue Moon Hotel, even though there were barely any bookings. The small old town didn’t attract too many tourists, so most of their days were spent in anticipation. Even though business was not great, Nezahat refused to sell her hotel. Kaan, the CEO of a real estate company, was determined to convince her to sell the property, so he decided to book a stay at the Blue Moon Hotel. Nezahat and her daughters were overjoyed when they learned that someone was finally coming to stay at their property. When Gulten and Nedret discovered that the customer was a young, handsome man, they became desperate to impress him. There were barely any young men left in town, so naturally Kaan was treated with utmost care. Did Kaan’s plan work? Let’s revisit the highlights of the show.

Spoiler Alert

Was Hidayet A Witch Or An Alien?

The short answer is that Hidayet was neither a witch nor an alien; she was a thief, and she was not alone. The ending of Platonic revealed that Hidayet worked closely with her sisters to execute her plans. They were the first triplets from Amasya, and they targeted weddings and engagement parties to steal gold, cash, and whatever valuables they could get their hands on. All of it makes sense, considering Hidayet was the town’s love guru/witch—young women trusted her, and she exploited them to her advantage. She often used herbal hallucinogens to ‘cure’ or ‘treat’ her clients when they were in trouble. Almost everyone in the small town had, at one time or another, consumed the magic herbs, and they ended up having vivid dreams. No one knew that Hidayet had two sisters, so she used it to her advantage to trick her clients into believing that they were either possessed or had become a target of a demonic spirit and only she could help them. Through tricks and herbs, she made sure that the girls became completely dependent on her, and if their wedding/engagement was fixed, they would invite her.

Hidayet had convinced Gulten that an evil spirit had touched her and wanted to take her soul, and only she could protect her. Gulten didn’t want to take risks, so she had Hidayet stay at her hotel, but she had no idea that she had been living there with her sisters as well. In the final episode, during Nasrin’s engagement, Hidayet had her sisters plan on setting off fireworks to distract the guests so that they could steal valuables, but unfortunately their plan didn’t quite work out. Even though chaos ensued after the fireworks went off, the cops had been keeping a close watch on Hidayet, so they ultimately got her. She and her sisters were arrested, and the cops were proud of themselves for solving the mystery.

What changed the girls’ destinies?

Gulten and Nedret were head over heels in love with Kaan. Mostly because there were barely any eligible bachelors in town. As the elder daughter, Gulten believed she deserved to marry Kaan. She was afraid of ‘running out of time’ and ending up single forever. Desperate to impress Kaan, she got cosmetic surgeries done. She chose a more sexual route to convince him to marry her. Whereas Nedret, who was on a spiritual journey, strongly believed that Kaan was her soulmate. She didn’t care about the physical aspect of things and was more focused on connecting with him on a spiritual level. Kaan, who eventually discovered that the deed of the hotel was actually in the names of the daughters, decided to flirt with both sisters. At first, he felt awkward with all the attention, but gradually he got so used to it that he started to believe that he was indeed special.

Hidayet’s herbal tea helped him further convince himself that he was an alien (reptilian) chosen for greatness. While Kaan’s delusion reached a crazy level, the girls soon got distracted with work that they actually enjoyed. Nedret had always wanted to be a tour guide, and it was while showing Kaan’s assistant, Mehtap, around town that some of the tourists took an interest in her knowledge of the place. She later brought them to the Blue Moon Hotel, and Gulten whipped them up a scrumptious meal. She was not happy at first, but soon Gulten realized the joy of watching people enjoy the food she’d painstakingly made, and she realized her efforts were worthwhile. Soon, more and more people booked reservations at the hotel’s restaurant to get a taste of Gulten’s magic, and Nedret’s local tour was also in high demand. The girls realized that their lives didn’t have to necessarily revolve around a man. The joy of doing what they loved was far superior to spending their days pursuing a man who was full of himself. Perhaps their father had been watching over them, and he guided them in the right direction. Or maybe it was the effect of the blue moon; the energy helped the sisters figure out what they truly wanted from their lives. Gulten and Nedret had initially decided to sell the hotel and move to Istanbul with Kaan. But soon, they realized how deeply they were attached to the town, they would rather look after the hotel that their parents had built with love and effort than sell it for an uncertain future. Nezahat felt proud of her girls when they announced that they would not sell the hotel during Nasrin’s engagement dinner.

What happened to Kaan?

Kaan couldn’t believe that, just when he was about to close the deal, the girls backed out. Gulten and Nedret had proposed to him, and he of course accepted them both. The sisters had no idea that he was toying with their emotions; they thought he genuinely wanted to be with them. But as soon as Gulten and Nedret got busy with their lives, Kaan felt neglected. He couldn’t believe that the town that used to almost worship him didn’t care about him anymore. (The effect of the magic tea that made Kaan appear irresistible gradually started to fade, and that was also why no one thought he was special anymore). He assumed that they were preparing a grand surprise for him, but when the sisters revealed that they had no intention of selling the hotel, he was devastated.

During Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel’s ending, Kaan consumed the magical herbal tea, and when he looked into the mirror, he saw himself transform into an alien creature. He was hallucinating, but he preferred being delusional to feel special than accepting the fact that no one really cared about him and his plan to buy the hotel had massively failed. He arrived at the party naked because he wanted the people of the town to see his real self. He started to randomly lick people; the aliens he had hallucinated about had asked him to do so. The guests at the dinner party ran for their lives, hoping not to get licked by Kaan. To make matters worse, Hidayet and her sisters ignited fireworks and also flew a drone (in a ghost costume) to scare the guests and unleash chaos. When a fire started, Kaan imagined the halo shape as a portal to a different universe, and without giving it any thought, he jumped through the haloed fire, but instead of being transported to a different universe, he ended up at the swimming pool, and the locals grabbed hold of him.

Platonic’s ending confirmed that Mehtap finally revealed the entire truth to the sisters, and they were glad that they didn’t make the mistake of selling the hotel. The three of them planned on renovating the property and making effective changes to attract more customers, and Nebahat, who owned a beauty shop, had agreed to invest in the business. Kaan was taken to a psych ward after the incident at the party. Before crashing the party naked, he’d made a live video on social media, and it had gone viral, so Kaan’s delusional ideas became public knowledge. Kaan never recovered; he still believed that there were aliens living in the mortal world.

Were there aliens in the town?

The final scene confirms that Kaan was indeed right; there were alien(s) living among them. So, who was the alien? Turns out it was Nebahat! If you really think about it, that somewhat makes sense! She looked way younger than 55, and she was attracted to Omer, the only guy in town who was convinced that aliens lived among the common people. Omer had been closely studying alien activities, and he was under the assumption that Kaan was the alien. He’d even kidnapped him just to confirm. Desperate to find a way out of the situation, Kaan lied about being an alien, and Omer believed him. Though later, he found out that Kaan had lied to him. Nebahat was attracted to Omer; maybe she genuinely had fallen in love with him, or perhaps she wanted to keep a close eye on the guy who had been prying into their activities. Her business helped her maintain a good relationship with the women of the town, and no one suspected her.

In Platonic: Blue Moon Hotel’s ending, when Omer stated that he felt sorry for Kaan, a young guy who was just delusional and confused, Nebahat added that maybe Kaan was right. Omer couldn’t believe that she was agreeing with the whole alien theory. He had gotten over it after the Kaan incident, and he was proud of the fact that he had also found love in the process. Nebahat stated with confidence that aliens had the capacity to erase people’s memories, so even if anyone saw them, they wouldn’t have any recollection of the incident. Nebahat looked straight at the camera, and she transformed into an alien (reptilian) creature, adding that maybe the aliens had always been waiting for the right time to show themselves. Clearly, she chose to set the stage and make the grand revelation to the documentary crew that had been interviewing the people who had witnessed the chaos at the Blue Moon Hotel. She tried to destroy the camera, but evidently it didn’t work, and we became witness to the fact that Nebahat was an alien, and it is likely that there were many like her. Presumably, she erased the memories of those who had witnessed her true form. And even if they remembered and told others about it, nobody would believe them, especially after the Kaan incident. Nebahat had become an integral member of the small town, and she also planned on investing in the hotel business, suggesting that she had no interest in leaving. Maybe the aliens had chosen Alacati to take over, and slowly with more investments their plan will succeed!
