Sylvia and Will headed straight from the wedding venue to the Jeopardy set in episode 5 of Platonic. Sylvia ended up arriving late, thanks to the insane traffic, and she watched her husband embarrass himself on camera. Even though Charlie had been preparing for the show mentally for years, when the time came, he just blanked out. Charlie was extremely nervous; he felt the pressure to deliver his best, and that resulted in somewhat of a panic. Meanwhile, Will started to experience the aftermath of him breaking his boss’ heart. He lost most of his privileges as an employee at Jay 6. But Will refused to quit his job; he was determined to make it work somehow. But that seems impossible considering the CEO of the company wanted him gone!
Spoiler Alert
Did Will get to keep his job?
Sylvia warned Will that working with his ex-fiancée would be a challenge, but Will was ready to ignore the past they shared and just focus on his job. He also decided to temporarily move into Sylvia’s house. He didn’t have a place to stay, and he could do with his best friend’s support during this strange phase of his life. Will decided to head to his office as usual but, to his surprise, found a random guy seated at his desk. The guy, Terry, claimed to have been appointed by Jenna. Though it soon became evident that the guy was not Terry, he was simply playing the character of an irritating man to get on Will’s nerves so that he would have no choice but to leave his job. Terry was working with Jenna, and he was confident that, in the next 48 hours, Will would have no choice but to resign. Will, on the other hand, was all the more determined not to quit. He took it as a challenge, and he wanted to establish that he wasn’t going anywhere. When Will discovered that ‘Terry’ had already put up a banner he’d rejected, he decided to head to Jay 6. To irritate Will, ‘Terry’ had also made the decision to sell hard seltzers, and he was not happy about it. Will was about to pull down the banner when Charlie warned him that he was entering a legal gray zone and maybe it was best to think before doing something this drastic. Terry was already recording the interaction on his phone, so clearly the motive was to push Will to the edge and use the video evidence against him. Will refused to stop; he ended up pulling down the banner, grabbing the cans of seltzer, and leaving. Will hasn’t quit yet; his conduct will possibly land him in trouble, and he will end up losing his job.
How did Charlie cope with life post-Jeopardy?
Charlie couldn’t imagine going back to his regular routine post-Jeopardy. He was so traumatized by the episode that he chose to take a few days off and stay at home. He was too embarrassed to discuss what he’d been through with his colleagues, and staying at home, in his cocoon, was his only safe option. Charlie was afraid that the moment his show would be aired on television, he would become a meme on social media. He struggled to live with the idea that very soon he would potentially become a national joke. He always thought his life would forever be altered once he went on ‘Jeopardy!’ But this was not what he had in mind. He couldn’t focus on his present because it was too painful, and whenever he thought of the future, he felt like never leaving his home. While Sylvia thought he was overthinking things, Charlie was convinced that his life was over. Quite unexpectedly, Will made him feel a little hopeful. He hyped up Charlie when he was working out, and they had a fun work-out session together. Later, when Will invited Charlie for a drink, he happily accepted it.
At the bar, Charlie mentioned how he wished he could’ve been like Will—spontaneous and without a care in the world. He believed his responsibilities had put him in a box, and now he didn’t know how to find his way out of it. His life had turned into a routine, and sometimes he wished he could’ve experimented a little. Will suggested he leave his job and explore a new career option, but Charlie didn’t think that was really possible. His family depended on him, and he had to provide. And while he couldn’t contemplate completely transforming his life, he considered doing one radical thing that could potentially take away all his pain.
In Platonic episode 5’s ending, Charlie showed up in front of Ed Little’s house; he was the head of Business Affairs for King World Media, and he had the power to stop Charlie’s episode from going on-air. Will could sense Charlie’s intent, but he wasn’t sure if trespassing onto someone’s property to erase an episode from a game show was worthwhile. As adventurous as Will was, he didn’t think it was a good idea, and he repeatedly warned Charlie. But he refused to listen to him. He was a little high, and he felt extremely confident about doing something as drastic as walking onto someone’s property. When he discovered that the door was locked, he climbed over the wall enclosing the property. But soon, the sudden realization that whatever he was planning on doing was extremely wrong struck him. He wanted to abort his mission, but he couldn’t climb back over the wall again.
Will advised him to find his way to the entrance and leave through the front door. Charlie was afraid that if he got caught, he would not only face charges for trespassing but also for breaking and entering, but it was already too late to think about the legal mess he was in. He somehow managed to make his way to the front door, but he freaked out when he realized that in the drawing room a bunch of kids were watching television, and they were clearly very high. Charlie tripped and fell on his way out. The kids saw a man run out of the front door, but they were too stoned to process the whole situation. Charlie ended up with a broken foot after the entire episode. Even though his mission was unsuccessful, he’d come to realize that losing the life he already had could just be so much worse than the situation he was in.
Is Sylvia going to give up once again?
Sylvia didn’t realize that she had a tendency to give up whenever things got a little out of hand. As an event planner, Sylvia had decided to expand her business with a corporate gig. Charlie’s law firm had hired her to throw an end-of-the-year party, and she promised to live up to their expectations. Sylvia thought she had everything under control, but when Stewart mentioned that they had decided to merge the annual party with the retirement party for Frank, one of the founders, with 1500 guests, she lost her confidence. She tried to come up with an excuse, but it didn’t pan out well. When she discussed the situation with Charlie and hinted that she might have to reconsider, he blatantly told her that she always doubted herself and instead of fighting through a challenging situation, she always ran away from it. He didn’t think she took her business seriously, and that left Sylvia extremely furious. She complained to Will about Charlie, but her best friend surprisingly agreed with Charlie’s opinion. She thought Sylvia always second-guessed herself, and she had a tendency to quit. But he believed in her and advised her to throw a fun party and prove everyone around her wrong. Sylvia got hyped up, and she decided to take on the challenge.
Stewart was unimpressed when Sylvia showed him around the venue she had found, but he didn’t mind it because he was used to boring law firm parties. Sylvia felt the compulsion to step up her game. She suggested a Hollywood glamor party, and when Stewart mentioned La Cienega Haciendas, she agreed, even though she’d never been to the club. She even lied about being a member at the exclusive club, and now she had to throw the firm party there! Katie told Sylvia how difficult it was to enter the very exclusive club, and booking the place was almost impossible. But Sylvia was not ready to give up, so she and Katie ended up at the club, slightly overdressed, and determined to make her plan work. But they were stopped at the entrance since they were not members. Sylvia had assumed Katie had a backup plan, but as it turned out, she didn’t. Thankfully a stranger offered to take one of them in as his guest to the club (he’d assumed they were sex workers!).
Sylvia entered the private club and met Stewart there, but she realized that there was no point in lying to him anymore. She admitted that she wasn’t a member at the club, so she couldn’t organize a party there. But Stewart refused to take no for an answer. He’d already discussed the plan with Frank, so the location was non-negotiable now. And if Sylvia failed to live up to her promise, Stewart and Charlie would face repercussions. Sylvia figured there was no way out of it, so she decided to face the challenge head-on, and she was determined to book the place. She courageously walked up to the receptionists, but instead of speaking to them, she ended up leaving the club. So, is this Sylvia doing exactly what everyone expected her to? Well, at least for now that seems to be the case. Hopefully she’ll find a contact and just make it work because if she fails, it will be tragic for her business, and it’ll also mess up her self-worth.
