I believe most of the characters in Rangeen were going through a process of self-discovery. These vibrant characters came from different backgrounds, and they brought their own viewpoints and experiences to the mix. Their lives crossed paths with each other, and that’s when complications started to arise. So, let’s list down the important characters who had an impact on our protagonist’s life and find out what kind of people they were.
Spoiler Alert
Adarsh
A man with a bruised ego often does things in anger that he later realizes he shouldn’t have. Adarsh was obviously hurt after he found out that his wife had paid for a gigolo, and moreover, she had done it multiple times in the past. Adarsh was a prolific investigative journalist, but not being able to achieve the success that he deserved made him lose control over his life. He started taking people and things for granted that he shouldn’t have. Before he realized it, there was a rift between him and his wife, and he just didn’t know how to go about it. It took him time to understand why his wife had felt the need to have another man in her life. Adarsh found himself in a bit of a mess at the end of season 1, but there was no denying that his life as a male escort and the experiences he’d had changed his perspective to a great extent. He realized where he had gone wrong, which I don’t think he would have if he had not made the bizarre decision to become a gigolo.
Naina
Naina, over a period of time, had lost her own identity. She was there for her husband, for her family, and for everybody else who was a part of her life. But 8 years into their marriage, she started to feel an unexplainable void. She felt unheard; she felt that her own husband didn’t value her existence. In that moment, ideally she should have gone and talked to her husband and addressed the matter. But a mind in turmoil often ends up taking the worst decisions. She was not proud of what she had done, but she also knew that even if she tried telling people what she was feeling, she would get the same monotonous response; she should put some more work into the marriage and start making certain compromises. Naina’s entire life had become a big compromise, and she had no roadmap on how to fix things. I believe that the decision that Naina took in the end was a really courageous one. Maybe in the future, she’ll decide to go back to Adarsh, but as of now, she felt that first she needed to find herself. She knew that her happiness couldn’t be dependent on any other person, be it her husband or her parents. She went on a quest of self-discovery, and she hoped that one day she would figure out things and find a way out.
Sitara
Sitara was an interesting character who ran her own clothing boutique. We later realized that it was just a front for the male escort business she operated. Sitara knew how a patriarchal society could lead a woman to question her own existence. She knew how a woman was treated and neglected and how she suppressed her own desires. The thing is, Sitara didn’t feel that she was doing anything wrong by running a male escort agency. Things changed for her when she decided to hire Adarsh as a male escort. He didn’t fit the stereotype, a fact that she really liked. She knew her clients couldn’t put up with most male escorts for more than an hour because they didn’t have anything to talk about. But here was an intelligent man who could accompany a woman shopping, hear them out, and even give them valuable advice. She placed her bets, and it didn’t turn out well for her. Adarsh broke the cardinal rule of the business, because of which she decided to throw him under the bus and make him realize where he had gone wrong. I believe that Sitara will play a crucial role in the second season if there is one, and Adarsh, too, will retaliate, as he is not the kind of man who’d let her off the hook so easily.
Sunny
Sunny was Sitara’s top male escort, who knew all the tricks of the trade, and things were really working out for him until, one day, he got caught red-handed by Adarsh. Sunny’s father was a butcher, but he never wanted to join the family trade. Sunny didn’t have a very good education, but that didn’t stop him from dreaming about settling outside India one day. Sitara decided to fire him the day she found out that her son, Vikki, had feelings for him. Sunny had grown up side-by-side with Sitara’s children, Vikki and Mini. They used to be inseparable before Vikki and Mini left town for further studies. After being fired, Sunny didn’t have any plan of action. He tried freelancing a bit in the escort industry, but he wasn’t able to do much. Things got even more complicated when Sunny realized that he might have some feelings for Vikki. He didn’t know how to address it, as he took Vikki’s advances as an insult. He tried to block those feelings, but that didn’t lead him anywhere. Sunny tried talking to Vikki, but Sitara made sure that that didn’t happen. It would be interesting to find out if Sunny is able to find his footing, in case there is Rangeen season 2. He had a lot of figuring out to do, and he knew that it was going to be an uphill battle for him.
Jugnu and Renu
Jugnu and Renu were both Sitara’s clients and had a deep impact on Adarsh’s life. Adarsh accompanied Renu to her alumni meet, where she told him how his wife would have felt. It was Renu who made him understand why Naina would have felt left out and why she would have decided to take that big step, which she knew could ruin everything for her. Jugnu, on the other hand, started enjoying Adarsh’s company. Sitara did not appreciate the fact that Adarsh had entertained her and gone to meet her directly, as she had laid out the rules of her business very clearly to him. Adarsh went a step ahead, and he did a favor for Jugnu. He published news to keep her husband in prison. Jugnu, I believe, was a very shrewd woman, and I think Adarsh committed a grave mistake by trusting her. She might have felt nice in his company, but she was not so selfless as to put her life in jeopardy and go out of her way to help Adarsh. But for the time being, she enjoyed her time with Adarsh, and he too got an unparalleled adrenaline rush that he didn’t get with anybody else.
Mrs. Verma
Mrs. Verma was Sitara’s good friend, and a trusted ally too. Sitara had sent Adarsh to her when he had first joined her agency. Sitara wanted to test Adarsh out before sending him to real customers. Mrs. Verma also taught new joinees how to conduct themselves and what to do in order to become successful in this line of work. She was one of the people who wanted Adarsh to not get attached to his clients. She told him that he was not there to romance the ladies, but to do a job. I felt that Mrs. Verma was a very pragmatic human being who knew her limits. I mean, that was why Sitara had kept her by her side.
Naveen and Jyoti
Naveen was Adarsh’s partner, whereas Jyoti was a journalist who worked for them. Naveen was like that one loyal friend who always stood by Adarsh’s side. There were times when they both had ideological differences, but in the end, Naveen realized that he needed Adarsh’s expertise, as without it they didn’t stand a chance to stand out in the crowd. Jyoti, on the other hand, was investigating a matter, and she wanted to publish a report on it. Little did she know that her boss, Adarsh, had some vested interest in the entire matter, and he didn’t want to publish that story, as he knew that it would expose him. Adarsh fired Jyoti at the end, and it was one of the most reckless professional decisions he had made. Jyoti idolized Adarsh, but at the end, she realized that she would have to compromise on her journalistic ethics if she stayed back.
