‘Reasonable Doubt’ Season 3 Episode 3 Recap: Did Alex Hill frame Ozzie?

Published

Jax was once again handling a high-profile case in Reasonable Doubt season 3, where a famous actor, Ozzie, was accused of murdering his girlfriend/stylist, Wendy. We saw in the first two episodes that there were a lot of things that Ozzie was hiding from Jax. What he didn’t understand was that not telling the truth to his lawyer wouldn’t help his case. He was in touch with a man named Alex, who was somehow involved in the entire matter, and Ozzie hadn’t mentioned him in front of Jax yet. Ozzie was taken into custody by the police after they found out that the gun used to kill Wendy belonged to him. So let’s find out what happened in episode 3, and if Jax was able to figure out a way to prove that her client was not guilty.

Spoiler Alert

Why did Jax’s father come back?

In the previous episode of Reasonable Doubt season 3, Jax’s biological father, Eddie, made a dramatic return. He arrived at her doorstep unannounced, and she was as surprised to see him there as anybody else. For 8 long years the man had not been around. Jax’s mother left Eddie because of his drug problem. He was a bass guitarist, and he knew that he had wasted all his talent and his life because of drug addiction. He probably went to rehab, got better, and decided to give life one more chance. He knew that his daughter would probably never be able to forgive him, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t apologize to her. Also, Jax’s mother wanted him back in her life after parting ways with her boyfriend. Jax found that amusing, because she was the same lady who didn’t want him in her life back in the day, and who made sure that Jax stayed away from him. Mama Lu went out to dinner with Lewis and Jax, and she invited Eddie without telling them. She told Jax to at least hear him out and give him another chance. Jax found her mother’s actions to be very convenient. Jax did meet Eddie at the end of episode 3, and she told him that if he made any mistakes, then it would not be her but him who would suffer. Yes, there was a time when she desperately wanted him back, but now she didn’t feel that void within her. Also, Jax felt that her father was hiding something from her. She had a strange gut feeling that he had an ulterior motive behind coming back into her life, and possibly her mother was aware of it too.

How did Naima end up in police custody?

Lewis and Jax hadn’t told their kids, Naima and Spence, about the entire Toni affair. The children didn’t know that Toni had filed a case because she wanted to hold Lewis liable for the death of their son, Jaeden. One of Naima’s friends told her about it, and she found it extremely derogatory. She didn’t want to be around anybody who spoke ill of her father. Not even for a moment did Naima believe her friend, and she felt that she was just trying to get on her nerves and irritate her. Naima started hanging out with Simone and Brenda, two girls who were not really disciplined and who got involved in all sorts of trouble. They made Naima break into a luxury brand store and asked her to steal a handbag from there. Naima ended up in the police station, and neither Lewis nor Jax could understand what had happened to her all of a sudden. Jax was having a conversation with Naima when he got to know why she started hanging out with a new set of friends. Jax got worried, and his illusion was broken. He had made himself believe that he could hide whatever had happened between him and Toni and not let his kids find out about it. Lewis had a conversation with Jax, and they both decided they needed to tell the truth to their kids before it was too late and they found out from somewhere else. I don’t think that conversation, which will happen in the subsequent episodes, will be an easy one for Naima and Spense.

Will Bill betray Jax’s trust?

Jax lashed out at her partners, especially a woman named Kathy, as she felt that they all were keeping a very close watch on her day-to-day business. Jax could see that Stephen and Vince were up to something, and she lost her composure and gave them a piece of her mind. I don’t know what Vince and Stephen had on their minds, but surely they were planning something against Jax’s interests. Maybe they wanted to find a way to tarnish her reputation and ultimately fire her from the firm. It was not such an easy task since Jax was a star lawyer and had a great track record. Vince and Stephen were trying to find a flaw in her process, for which they had asked Bill to keep a close watch on her and keep reporting to them about whatever was happening in the Ozzie case. Bill had solely decided to follow their orders because he felt that by doing so he would become a partner at the firm. But I don’t think that he would be willing to betray Jax’s trust in the future. Bill didn’t tell Jax that Stephen and Vince wanted him to report on her, but I guess in the near future he will. In fact, he went up to Jax and told her that he respected her because, despite being cast out by her own team members, Jax operated in the most unabashed manner. He told her how, in law school, he felt like an outsider because he was in his thirties and not as young as his fellow students. He spoke about how he didn’t understand the pop culture references and was never invited to the cool parties. He told Jax that he greatly admired her. At the end of episode 3 we saw that Bill was also having some issues in his personal life. His partner didn’t let him meet his kids, and he just helplessly stood outside her house, not knowing what he had done to deserve this. I believe in the subsequent episodes we will get to know what exactly he was going through and why he wasn’t allowed to see his kids. I think Jax will most probably come to his rescue, and they both will develop a strong emotional and professional bond.

Did Alex Hill frame Ozzie?

Ozzie had been sober for the last couple of years, but after the entire Wendy episode, he started using once again. He was in bad shape mentally, and Jax didn’t want him to do anything that could taint his cause. Jax had gotten him bail at $5 million, and she told Ozzie that he needed to be on his best behavior in order to make a good impression on the jury. But from posting shirtless pictures to disobeying the court’s orders and leaving his house, Ozzie did all sorts of things. Jax decided that her assistant, Daniel, needed to go to Ozzie’s place and kept a close watch on him. Daniel had a good conversation with Ozzie’s sister, Kristen Edwards, and he discovered that, on several occasions, she’d procured drugs for him herself, believing it was safer than letting him buy harmful substances from others. In her mind, if he was going to use regardless, at least she could ensure what he was consuming was safe to some extent. Also, Daniel had developed a small crush on Kristen, and it would be interesting to see if he ever expresses his feelings.

Ozzie overdosed on drugs while Daniel was on watch, and after that scary incident, he talked to psychologist Dr. Owens. It was through the conversation he had with Dr. Owens that we came to know that he had been abused when he was 13 years old by a woman who was probably in her thirties. Though Ozzie believed it to be a consensual act, Owens helped him realize that, at just 13, he couldn’t possibly understand how he had been manipulated. She explained that a 30-year-old woman could easily make him believe it was mutual, but in reality, he had been abused.

At the end of episode 3, Jax came to the conclusion that somebody must have compelled Ozzie to consume drugs, as a guy who was sober for 2 years wouldn’t throw it away all of a sudden. Jax was not wrong, as Ozzie received a call from a man named Alex Hill, who Ozzie had contacted just after an arrest warrant was issued in his name in episode 2. He asked Alex to step up to the front and tell authorities what had happened so that they believed his alibi. But Alex didn’t want to do so. From what it seemed, Alex had framed Ozzie, and he wanted to take revenge on him. I believe Alex worked on the show that Ozzie did, and he felt jealous of his success. Probably Alex didn’t like how Ozzie got all the fame and importance, and he just wanted to see him suffer. I guess Jax has a lot of obstacles to overcome on the professional and personal front, and she would need all the support she could get from her well-wishers.
