‘Resident Playbook’ Episode 11 Recap: Does Everyone Know About Yi-Young and Do-Won?

Published

We’re in the penultimate episode of Resident Playbook, which means there’s only one episode left for the whole hospital to learn about Do-Won and Yi-Young’s relationship. I think it’s possible the show will have a time jump and go some 3-4 years into the future, by when the first years will be seniors, but if we’re going to get another season of the show like we did with Hospital Playlist, then a time jump is unlikely. I’m not entirely sure. The 11th episode is a little bit sad, and I suppose it’s preparing us for a proper goodbye, but I have a feeling it’s not going to be as emotional as some of the earlier episodes that had me tearing up in an instant. In all honesty, after last week, this episode did feel slightly dull, but it was still decent. Anyway, with that said, let’s jump straight into what happens in episode 11.

Spoiler Alert

What Does Yi-Young Have To Do For The Professor?

Resident Playbook episode 11 begins with Do-Won looking for a new place to stay near the hospital because he’s going to become a fellow. Yi-Young is cute when she’s upset, and Do-Won is happy that she likes him so much that she’s upset he’s leaving. They’re overheard by Do Jae-Hak (another cameo from the original show), and he offers Do-Won a place to stay that’s super cheap and not too shabby either. This clearly doesn’t make sense to Yi-Young and Do-Won, and they think this man is trying to scam them. I suppose if he’d just said he was a doctor too, it wouldn’t have really helped, but he could’ve proved it to them through some paperwork, but anyway, it was fun seeing him, and he’s just as jolly and kind of stupid as always.

Do-Won and Yi-Young then enjoy a meal together at a restaurant where a man collapses, choking. They immediately go into doctor mode and save the man; this will be important for later. Meanwhile, there’s a new nurse named Chae-Ryeong at the hospital, and she happens to see Yi-Young and Do-Won together. But what she saw isn’t that important because she knows Yi-Young from before. Turns out, she worked at the same hospital as Yi-Young before, and the professor was inappropriate with her. Remember how Yi-Young was “thrown out” of her previous hospital? It looks like she didn’t really do anything wrong; she just punched the professor who was touching Chae-Ryeong inappropriately and then bit his hand—well, the same one he uses for surgery, of course. Yi-Young was thrown out for fighting injustice and never said anything about it. But Chae-Ryeong is delighted to see she’s doing fine.

Meanwhile, Nam-Kyung is still struggling to get Tak Gi-On on board as a new resident for the next year. He’s especially traumatized after seeing two deaths in the GYN department, and this has Nam-Kyung fearing that he will never consider their department. But to make things worse, there’s an emergency birth, and both Nam-Kyung and Eun-Mi are screaming to get things done, all of which Gi-On sees. The two ladies think this is the last straw for him, and Nam-Kyung promises to look for someone else to join their department, or the next year will be a disaster.

Jae-Il is treating an old cancer patient whose younger sister is 75 and unmarried. The woman is always irritable, but she’s just genuinely afraid that the only person who loves her will be gone soon. Jae-Il is very comforting and helps both of them out by taking pictures of them together for fond memories. He also hurts his knee and then pretends he can’t walk so that he can get Sa-Bi to be around him more. When he accidentally spills some hot coffee on himself, he ends up standing up out of the wheelchair, realizing too late that he’s outed himself. This is when Sa-Bi wonders if he actually does like her more than just as a friend. Just get together already.

On the other hand, Yi-Young has the responsibility of looking after a pregnant doctor named Geum Sae-Byeok at Yulje. She’s heavily pregnant and trains Yi-Young to read ultrasounds properly and understand how to help her when she needs it. When it comes time for the actual delivery, Yi-Young realizes that Sae-Byeok needs a C-section rather than a regular delivery. She panics, but Chae-Ryeong helps her deal with it. But the really difficult part comes when Yi-Young has to stitch up the doctor’s abdomen as per her request. She had wanted a first-year to do it for her; I guess it was part of her training. Yi-Young says no until Professor Seo forces her to do it. It turns out fine.

How Do The First Years Find Out About Yi-Young And Do-Won?

During a dinner Yi-Young is having with her sister and her husband, Nam-Kyung ends up seeing them together. She joins them for a meal, even though Yi-Young claims they’re not friends. But her sister is genuinely proud that Yi-Young is doing well. Yi-Young also tells them not to mention Do-Won in front of Nam-Kyung, because no one at the hospital knows that they’re in-laws. Too many secrets now.

Resident Playbook episode 11’s ending, revealed that all three first-years know one of Yi-Young’s secrets. Sa-Bi knows that she lives with Do-Won, Jae-Il knows that she’s going out with him, and Nam-Kyung, who saw Do-Won with his sister-in-law a bit after the dinner, knows that they’re in-laws. Ultimately, they all reveal to each other what they know after seeing the CCTV footage of Do-Won and Yi-Young helping that man at the restaurant. Now she’s got no escape, but obviously the other kids are going to be happy for them. Also, it seems Yi-Young might end up moving away for a bit, at least after finishing her first year of residency. Since this is a drama, there’s really nothing that can be predicted about the ending. But I suppose we’ll see Sa-Bi and Jae-Il pairing up, and Yi-Young and Do-Won will tell everybody they’re dating.
