‘Sara: Woman In The Shadows’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Enrico Vigilante Dead?

Published

In Sara: Woman in the Shadows’ ending, Sara finally figured out the identity of the man who had Teresa’s lover, Sergio Minucci, murdered. [Spoiler Alert] Sergio’s longtime girlfriend, Rachele, used her father’s connections to fix Sergio up with a job working for the regional Campania candidate, Tarallo, a corrupt politician who was looking for someone who could help him with his speeches and other PR related work for him. However, it turned out Sergio wasn’t a fan of Tarallo’s right-wing ideology. He had a hunch that Tarallo’s friends in high places, including the mafia, were not only funding his campaign but also helping him rig the elections. This was the reason why Sergio was gathering information against him so he and his journalist friend, Edoardo Belliti, could expose the racket. But before the duo could bring down Tarallo, Rachele saw Sergio with Teresa and got paranoid. Rachele told her dad, Paolo Anzovino, about Sergio’s sting operation. Anzovino was in charge of Tarallo’s security, but he didn’t report the leak to Tarallo. Instead, he informed Enrico Vigilante, the man who had been pulling the strings from the shadows. During the 1990s, Vigilante, while working with Cosa Nostra, was involved in a series of bombings in the country and had planted explosives for the fascists. Back in the day, Sara’s lover and boss, Massimiliano, formed a secret operations unit to track down members of the mafia, and during his time, he found out about a ghost, who was none other than Vigilante. Throughout his career he had been obsessed with Vigilante and had made it his life’s mission to hunt him down, but unfortunately, in the end, had to abandon his trail because of some internal politics and pressure from his superiors. Now, in the present day, as Sara came out of the shadows, long after Massimiliano’s death, she made it her mission to bring Vigilante to justice and stop him once and for all. So, without any further ado, let’s take a detailed look at everything that went down in the ending of Sara: Woman in the Shadows.

Teresa Killed Vigilante

For the longest time, Teresa, devastated by her lover’s death, believed that it was Sergio’s boss, Tarallo, who had him killed. However, as Sara and detective Davide Pardo got to the bottom of the truth, they found out that the two thugs, Aldo Esposito and his father, Vito Esposito, who had kidnapped Sergio and beaten him to death, were actually working for Vigilante. Pardo had recovered Aldo’s phone from near his dead body, which proved that he had been sending pictures of Sergio to his boss. Pardo retrieved this phone from police custody, which Teresa then handed over to Anna Maria, the genius hacker on her secret operations unit. Teresa wanted Anna Maria to hack the phone and trace the device to which these pictures were sent. She believed Aldo had sent these photos to Vigilante, which meant that Aldo’s phone would eventually lead them to Vigilante. Well, in the show’s ending, Teresa told Sara that Anna Maria didn’t find anything worthwhile. She lied. Teresa knew exactly where Vigilante used to go for his morning run, and therefore she tracked him down to the joggers’ park and shot him dead.

Teresa Became The Vigilante

The thing is, Teresa had been burning with a desire for vengeance, and would have done anything to exact revenge for Sergio’s death. Being an agent, she would have taken the legal route like Massimiliano, but we all know what happened there. Through wiretapping, Massimiliano had found evidence that Vigilante was planning an attack in Florence, which was why he went to Rome to inform his seniors about the attack. However, as always, Lembo didn’t find the interceptions credible, and therefore didn’t allow Massimiliano to go on with his investigation. Shortly after, an attack took place in the middle of the night in Florence. More than 30 people were injured, and unfortunately, 5, including 2 children, lost their lives.

Till the very end, Massimiliano blamed himself for the tragic loss, while in reality, the real culprit was Lembo, the corrupt politician who had funded Massimiliano’s unit, likely to project his friends in the government and the mafia. The show’s ending further established that Massimiliano always knew about Lembo’s involvement with Vigilante, but turned a blind eye because going against Lembo would mean losing his unit forever. This likely was the reason why Massimiliano didn’t share his suspicions with anyone else, not even Sara. But yes, the truth about Lembo did eat him hollow till his death. So even if Teresa had procured evidence against Vigilante and had given it to Lembo, he wouldn’t have done a thing to bring Vigilante to justice. Instead, he would have helped him like always. Maybe he would have asked him to go underground or leave the country for a while until the trail went cold, which I believe was the reason why Teresa didn’t inform anyone, not even Sara, that she knew Vigilante’s exact whereabouts. And in the show’s ending, she finally confronted her lover’s killer and shot him.

You see, both Sara and Teresa had taken up the mantle of a “vigilante” (not the person, but the actual title). They knew everyone in the government or the police had been corrupted to the core, which forced them to take matters into their own hands. In the first episode of the show, Sara had pulled off a similar act to avenge her son, Giorgio. A doctor named Ludovico Terzani ran over Giorgio and killed him on the spot. The police believed it was an accident, except for Sara, who, through her investigation, had found that Ludovico intentionally murdered Giorgio because Giorgio was having an affair with Silvia Prati, a woman Ludovico had dated briefly and become obsessed with. Sara knew that she wouldn’t be able to find any evidence against the vicious doctor, which was why she killed her son’s killer the same way he killed him.

Vigilante Killed Tarallo

While Vigilante’s true motives remained hazy, it was suggested that Vigilante represented a powerful group of people who wanted to build a nuclear power plant in Campania. This was the only reason Vigilante had funded Tarallo’s campaign and was rigging the election in his favor, so that after Tarallo would become the president, he would green-light the project. However, during the election campaign, Tarallo was bribed by another set of influential men who wanted him to promote renewable energy instead of nuclear plants. From a brief exchange between Tarallo and Vigilante, it became apparent that the former was going to betray his master, just days before the election. Vigilante pulled the plug and had Tarallo killed. It was further suggested that Vigilante, with the help of Lembo or someone more powerful in the government, had turned off the security cameras during Tarallo’s rally so that Vigilante’s sniper could escape and no one would ever be able to connect the dots. And because we know that Vigilante and Lembo had been working together, I think it wouldn’t be wrong in assuming that it was Vigilante who decided to shut down the secret operations unit as they had gathered too much dirt on him. The small team had indeed become a nuisance for Vigilante, which was why he wanted them all alone. I suppose, after Tarallo’s death, Vigilante had prepared another puppet to run for the elections so he could fulfil his objectives, but before he could do so, Teresa shot him.

Edoardo Belliti Is Alive

Sara: Woman in the Shadows’ finale revealed that Belliti, who was previously presumed dead, didn’t die in the abandoned construction site. It was Aldo’s father, Vito, who died on that tragic night, and later we saw Aldo dumping his body in the water. Meanwhile, Belliti managed to escape, and had been trying to lay low when Aldo tracked him down to a hotel. He tried to kill Belliti and avenge his father’s death, but luckily Belliti survived the second attack, too. He shot Aldo and went straight to the airport to leave the country for Lisbon. However, before leaving, he left an encrypted message for Sara and Pardo on the house hunting website, which Pardo finally cracked in the show’s ending, getting a hold of a pendrive. It contained Belliti’s detailed investigation report on Tarallo’s political scandal and his involvement with the organized crime ring. It’s likely that after the dust settles, Belliti will return to Italy to continue his work as an investigative journalist.

Viola Gave Birth To A Son

Sara’s daughter-in-law, Viola, who was eight months pregnant with Giorgio’s child, finally gave birth to a son. As soon as Sara got the news, she came running to the hospital to stand by Viola’s side, as she didn’t want to repeat the same mistake. She’d repented her whole life for abandoning Giorgio when he needed his mother the most, and I guess Sara wanted to make up for that mistake by looking after Viola and her son in the best possible way she could. Detective Pardo too came to meet Sara and her newborn, and the way the two had been interacting with each other, especially Pardo, I think they will start seeing each other in the near future. Maybe they’ll end up being a couple in season 2. Sara has already approved this guy, so you never know what the future may bring.

Sara Finally Played The CD

Throughout the show, Sara was haunted by Massimiliano’s absence. Maybe he was gone too soon, and Sara was still struggling with the loss, which was the reason why she left the unit and started living a life in the shadows. She had cut off contact with all her common friends; however, when Teresa dragged her into investigating Sergio’s disappearance, she visited an old accomplice, Catapano, who later gave him a CD that Massimiliano had left for Sara years ago. This CD had a recording, which I guess many of you believed was some sort of confession that Massimiliano always knew that Vigilante and Lembo had their hands in each other’s pockets, but I don’t think that’s really the case. The show didn’t reveal what exactly was on that CD, but it could be safe to assume that it was just a simple message Massimiliano left for Sara that could help her move on with her life after he was gone. And the way Sara walked away from the imaginary Massimiliano implied that she had indeed found closure in life. However, the question that you all might still be asking is, will these three ladies, Sara, Viola, and Teresa, be returning for season 2? Well, Sara: Woman in the Shadows’ ending didn’t leave any loose ends, per se, so your guess is as good as mine.
