School Spirits season 2’s ending is a confusing mess that leaves us with many questions for what’s to come next. The final episode of the second season definitely feels a little bit too dragged out, and we don’t really learn a lot about what’s been going down, except for what we already knew or had a hunch about. It definitely leaves the door open for another season, but I’m not sure what more can be explored since Maddie is back in the real world. I suppose we’ve got to focus on the part where Mr. Martin remarks about how it’s odd that so many people died at the school. Is it a supernatural thing he believes is connected to the school? Or does it have something to do with the authorities? Or is it just Mr. Martin trying to blame something else for his mistakes? Before we explore what might come next in School Spirits, let’s quickly go through the ending of the final episode of season 2.
Spoiler Alert
Who Started the Fire?
I hadn’t realized the kids hadn’t pieced together that it was Mr. Martin who started the fire back in the day, because he wanted revenge for being fired. In School Spirits season 2’s finale, Nicole’s meeting with Eugene proves useful because she gets a voice note from the old man that leads her, Claire, and Xavier to a storage unit behind the old age home. Here, they find a VHS tape that shows Eugene telling the press that Janet didn’t start the fire, Mr. Martin did, because he had just been fired thanks to Janet’s dad. Nicole and the rest show up at school to tell Maddie and the spirits about this truth so that nobody gets hurt, but it’s already too late. By this time, Janet’s already left Maddie’s body, but Maddie’s still in the spirit world. Just as the spirits find out about the revenge story, Mr. Martin drags Janet, who has the watch because Maddie gave it to her, into the scar and locks them in. To help Janet, the rest of the gang all have to go through their scars (the map that they made earlier with Janet and Mr. Martin’s notes).
All Mr. Martin wants from Janet is forgiveness because that’s the only way he can find closure and leave the spirit world. Mr. Martin’s scar is essentially his guilt for putting Janet’s life in danger and being the reason she died. It’s true he didn’t want anyone hurt, but he ended up killing not only himself but Janet too. The rest of the gang goes through their scars and helps each other deal with the scary stuff together. I suppose it is, in a way, a trust exercise, because everyone is revealing their most sensitive parts. However, what nobody knows is that Maddie has a scar, too, and realizing that the necklace is her key, Maddie decides to see where it takes her before she goes back to the real world.
In Maddie’s scar, she sees her dad walking towards her, and she also sees her mum pouring herself a drink. However, Maddie seems to be stuck to the floor of the boiler room as it starts to fill with water. She’s drowning in the water until Wally pulls her out. I guess Maddie’s scar is a reminder of how she’s weighed down by her parents. The sins of her mother and the death of her father shape her existence.
How Does Janet Get Her Exit Sign?
Mr. Martin tells Janet to say out loud the words “I forgive you” while they’re in their combined scar. Janet finally realizes that she didn’t deserve any of the things she went through back when she was alive—her father, the era she was born in, but most importantly, Mr. Martin. As she comes to this realization, a door with an exit sign above it shows up in the scar. This is what they’ve been trying to get all this time, but it’s Janet’s exit, not Mr. Martin’s. Mr. Martin tries to run out of the door, but Janet shoves him to the floor before he can make it. Janet decides to lock him up in the scar, just as he used to do to her. So Mr. Martin can’t cross over until Janet does. On the other hand, Wally also gets his exit, but we don’t really see him find his moment of closure. I wonder if it has to do with him talking to his mum and letting her and the idea of being an ideal son go.
Who Gets Left Behind In Spirit World?
In School Spirits season 2’s ending, Janet decides to go back to Mr. Martin to get some answers, but to her surprise, Simon’s in the scar, and it looks like he can interact with the spirits. What I think has happened is that when Maddie found her way back to her body and the school started blinking red, a hotpot of energy was created in the boiler room where spirits and humans can interact. I did think Simon could’ve accidentally hurt himself while looking for Maddie, but that doesn’t really make sense. I think the blinking red stuff is the reason he might be able to see Mr. Martin and Janet. Or, on the other hand, it’s possible he was just stuck there, and nobody knew.
At the same time, the rest of the gang is at the hospital with Maddie. I’m not sure how they’ve managed to forget the guy who started this whole thing, but anyway. Xavier finally apologizes to Maddie about the whole Claire thing and just everything that’s gone down, I guess, and then he says hi to Maddie’s dad. Now, Maddie can’t see the man because he’s a spirit, but Xavier can still see him. Maybe this could mean that the red flashing allows Xavier to see some spirits, or specifically those in the hospital? It’s interesting that Maddie can’t see them, though.
What Can We Expect From Season 3?
I think we’ll get to see each of the spirits find their exit doors first in School Spirits season 3. From how things turned out in the final, I think Yuri will have a big role somehow, because Janet told him she’ll teach him how to handle the boiler room door. On the other hand, Simon might be the answer to the spirit world because Maddie’s back to being, well, “normal.” Guess he was in the right place at the right time. With Wally having found his exit, it might be time to say goodbye sooner rather than later. Guess his arc is complete since he found love with Maddie and he did everything he wanted to, so I guess it’s time for him to leave. Maybe Xavier and Maddie will help her dad cross over, and that’s the whole purpose of her scar as well as Xavier still being able to see the man. I would hope that School Spirits season 3 will be the final one because I can’t imagine there’s a lot more to explore with this storyline.
