‘School Spirits’ Season 2 Episodes 1-2 Recap: What Happened To Janet?

Published

School Spirits season 2 jumps straight into the thick of the story. There are new characters, both very interesting, and new friendships between old ones too. This season is definitely going to see some characters leave/cross over. Episode 1 begins with Mr. Martin running away after realizing that Maddie knows the truth about what happened to her, i.e., that Janet “body-snatched” her. At the same time, Janet, i.e., Maddie’s body, gets on a bus to get out of town mysteriously. Simon believes he’s crazy and there’s no such things as ghosts because they saw Maddie drive off with Xavier’s car. But an unconscious Xavier experiences something super interesting. With that said, let’s jump straight into everything that happens in the first two episodes of School Spirits season 2.

Spoiler Alert

Who Is Janet Hamilton?

In episodes 1 and 2, we learn that Janet was a very bright student who had a very strict reverend for a father. However, her grandmother was very fond of her, so she wanted her to pursue her dreams. Meanwhile, at school, Janet studied chemistry with Mr. Martin, who told her that she was very good at chemistry and should try to go to the University of Chicago, where he went, to study chemical engineering. Of course, the reverend did not approve of this idea. First, he told Mr. Martin not to loiter around with Janet and feed her “harmful” ideas. But the final blow came when he slapped Janet after finding a brochure about the university in Janet’s possession. He slapped her face and burnt the brochure, leaving her broken on the inside. In the afterlife, Janet collected everybody’s objects, the objects they came into the world of the dead with, because she and Mr. Martin know a secret. However, it looks like because of the big fight that Maddie witnessed, Janet ran into her and stole her body, leaving the real Maddie in spirit world.

Where Does Janet Go?

Janet, in Maddie’s body, goes to Bingham County, where her grandmother used to live. When she gets there, she learns that her grandma died 10 years after her and breaks down. She also lies in her own grave under the night sky, almost as if she’s tired of being here. Maybe she’s just sad that she has to let go of her identity or of this world; we don’t know which just yet. But things get strange when Janet sees her dad again in the house. Janet’s clearly still suffering psychologically. Now, if her dad died there, maybe she can see his spirit, but it’s more likely her trauma that’s getting to her here. She is, after all, alone. This makes Janet extra upset, and she burns down the house that she had both wonderful and terrible memories in. Guess this is some kind of closure?

Why Does Xavier Believe Simon?

Simon puts on loud music when he’s back at school and ignores Maddie. However, she needs answers, so she does everything in her power to make him listen to her. The rest of the gang gives her ideas on how to do this. Finally, it is a memory from her dad’s funeral that gets him to stop and listen to her. Maddie gets the details wrong, which if she were a figment of Simon’s imagination, she wouldn’t have. So he believes her and says he’ll definitely help her. He also looks up Janet Hamilton.

At the same time, Xavier wakes up in the hospital, but it’s his spirit form. He sees a bunch of ghosts in the waiting room and is really surprised. However, he then watches as people frantically rush to his room, where he sees his own body. The next thing he knows, he’s actually awake. Now, I thought Mr. Martin had somehow taken over Xavier’s body, but I was wrong. Since Xavier’s had a word with some ghosts now, he believes Simon when he tells him about the whole Maddie situation and that he can talk to her. Nicole and Claire, on the other hand, think they need to pray for him.

Who Are The New Characters?

In season 2, we meet a band member named Quinn who is impressed by Rhonda’s speech. She joins the group to help them figure out what’s going on with Maddie. At the same time, there’s a guy named Yuri who is apparently Russian and doesn’t speak a word of English. But this is not true, and he tells the group about some of the things Janet made in the pottery room (where while’s away making the same pot). The gang also learn the hard way the pot Janet made can break and won’t go back to its old form. This means Janet is a special kind of ghost because anything the ghosts touch or “harm” ends up going back to its original position. They also find a notebook in a wooden box she made, written in shorthand. It’s Quinn who is able to decode it a little bit.

Do Xavier and Simon find Janet?

At the end of episode 2, there’s an Easter egg from the first season because Claire goes knocking on Nicole’s door. This time though, instead of telling her not to come in, Nicole, unlike Maddie, lets Claire into her safe space, marking their friendship. On the other hand, Xavier and Simon drive off from Bingham County after all of their detective work paid off. The duo drives all the way to Janet’s grandma’s house before being stopped by the sheriff because the whole building is on fire. Apparently, people spotted a delinquent heading into the house, but nothing is clear right now. Despite Simon and Xavier not knowing if Maddie’s body is alive or dead, their theory is confirmed because why would Maddie go to Janet’s grandma’s house?
