‘Spirit Untamed’ Summary & Ending, Explained – Does Lucky Stay Back in Miradero?

Published

Based on the Dreamworks Spirit Animated franchise, Spirit Untamed marks the feature debut of director Elaine Bogan and co-director by Ennio Torresan Jr. It follows a Kiger mustang horse and her new rider, Lucky. Together, they embark on an adventurous journey filled with uncertainty, bravery, and compassion.

Plot Summary

A young girl, Lucky Prescott, arrives at a western rural town, Miradero, to spend summers with her father, Jim (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal). Widowed, Jim griefed his late wife, Milagro Navarro, and couldn’t look after his only daughter. He sent Lucky to live with his father, James, and sister Cora.

On her return, Lucky learns that her mother Milagro was a horse-riding stunt performer. She died during a performance enacting a stunt she had mastered. But Tragedy doesn’t spare the masters, as they say.

Lucky, a fearless girl, doesn’t enjoy restrictions that crush her adventurous soul. The vibe of free-western town matches with her valor persona. In Miradero, she encounters a Kiger mustang and is bewitched by the wild horse spirit. She even names the horse “spirit” and initiates a friendship with the motive of riding the horse one day. However, Jim doesn’t entertain the idea of Lucky being near any horse, and the fear of her wife’s death strikes him again. A clash further distances the father and the daughter. Lucky runs away from home to meet Spirit in the wilderness. But Luck wasn’t aware of the underlying perils waiting for her in the mountains.

‘Spirit Untamed’ Ending Explained

A group of wanted bandits, the Hendricks Five, abducted Spirit’s herd of wild horses. Hendrick wanted to start a new life somewhere out of the country and thus captured the horses to auction them later. The bandits shoved the horses into a speeding train, traveling towards the isolated docks. They took everyone except Spirit.

Lucky decided to help Spirit get back its herd. She called for aid from the two new friends she made in Miradero. Abigail, Pru Granger, and Lucky commenced a journey to save the horses. They planned to outrun the train by crossing a dangerous shortcut. The trio aimed to reach the water depot before the train. However, at the water depot, the three girls failed to retrieve the horses. To add to their failure, Hendrick and his gang captured Spirit as well.

Abigail, Pru, and Lucky reached the docks. Jim and others arrived there riding on the fastest train built by Jim. He called it Milagro, named after his fearless wife, Milagro Navarro. In the final face-off, Spirit kicked Hendrick out of the ship while Lucky rescued the horses. Jim and others fought against the goons, thereby saving the horses from the evil horse wrangler.

Lucky and Spirit part their ways. Spirit joins its herd of horses in the wilderness, while Lucky stays back with her herd/family.

The summer got over soon, and it was time for Lucky to return back to her grandfather’s house with Aunt Cora. During the Miradero festival, Jim admired Lucky’s endeavor and bravery. Jim stated that Lucky’s mother would have done the same, and Lucky being her mother’s daughter, is the second bravest woman Jim had ever met. Jim requested Lucky to stay back in Miradero. Lucky agreed, and an overjoyed Jim announced the happy news on the festival stage. Lucky’s friends suggested that if she was staying, she might need a horse too. The screen cuts to Spirit, and its herd of horses in the wild, suggesting that Lucky’s horse would be one and only, Spirit.
