Suicide Squad 2: Characters Origins in DC Universe

Published on

In these harsh and testing times, the DC FanDome event came as a boon to DC lovers, and the reboot of the Suicide Squad was witnessed by the fans. The first installment in the series was a bleak attempt at delivering a proper character arc to the beloved comic book villains turned heroes for redemption and the final nail in the coffin was the face tattoo version of Jared Leto’s The Joker. The second installment, however, is having a Marvel kind of play in the Suicide Squad 2 (thanks to James Gunn).

The characters are in numbers, the casting looks pristine and every character will have an impact on the story as we have seen previously in Avengers saga. So Let’s analyze the different characters in the Suicide Squad 2!

1. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

If there was one thing good about the last Suicide Squad was the embodiment of Harley Quinn to a level of perfection by Margot Robbie that even though the Joker we had was not up to the mark, Harley came for the rescue. It was almost impossible for DC and Warner Bros to drop Robbie.

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

The origin of Harley Quinn dates back to 1994. The Batman Adventures: Mad Love, a graphic novel created by Dimi and Timm gave us the beloved antagonist of today. The giddy and sometimes flirtatious makes her prey even more helpless sometimes and it’s mixed with an immense amount of crazy. It would be treat to see what Harley will be in the new arrival, Suicide Squad 2.

2. Peacemaker (John Cena)

Finally John Cena in a movie I think he belongs to, Peacemaker or Christopher Smith originates as a pacifist between nations and would go to all lengths to make sure the peace is attained.

Suicide Squad 2

Appearing first in Fightin’5 comic book, he gradually graduates into a deadly killing machine due to various personal reasons and is a forced to be reckoned with. John Cena can do justice to this as it is quite similar to his American persona in WWE.

3. Bloodsport (Idris Elba)

I think whenever they are making a movie big they call Idris Elba and ask to do a role that he would kill, be it any series he has been a part of, he makes sure the acting is always the first priority and for that he embraces the character.

Bloodsport (Idris Elba)

In Suicide Squad 2, we will witness Bloodsport, this nemesis of Superman first appeared in the Superman Vol.2 comic book series. This version of Bloodsport is Robert DuBois, an African-American man who undergoes a mental breakdown after acknowledging that his brother went to the Vietnam War instead of him, as he was scared. This makes him extremely obsessed with war and begins to loathe himself and resorts to a life of a heinous killer. Amidst all this, he meets Lex Luthor. The name he later adorned was Bloodsport which he acquired due to sheer rampage caused by him in Metropolis and the fact that he even managed to shoot Superman with special kryptonite bullets.

4. Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)

Colonel Rick Flag is properly known only by hardcore DC fans as it’s a legacy driven thing panning over various editions. Colonel Rick Flag senior was the first person who was also a member of Task Force X.

Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)

In this rendition of we will see the Karin Grace version of Rick Flag as his story line begins with him rescued by the Suicide Squad’s Nemesis, from the abduction camp of the Jihad, after this he has been a regular member of the Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag.

5. Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)

The only male recurring character from the last debacle of a movie is none other than Captain Boomerang played by Jai Courtney. His last go at this character was neither too good nor so bad. He was no Margot Robbie and definitely not a fiasco like Leto.

Suicide Squad 2

Digger Harkness a.k.a Captain Boomerang is a supervillain who has been against the Flash. He specializes in technically enhanced boomerangs, impeccable marksmanship, and his expertise with his fatal boomerangs.

6. The Thinker (Peter Capaldi)

Allegedly we are going to see Peter Capaldi play the Des Connor version of The Thinker. This version of the Thinker is portrayed in the Gotham City where possessions of various telepathic abilities which could instill fear in someone, he became one of the arch-nemesis of the Batman.

The Thinker (Peter Capaldi)

Who would have been better for such a role than Dr. Who himself. Capaldi has proven over the course of his career that when it comes to portraying a fictional character, he has to believe in it.

7. Blackguard (Pete Davidson)

One of the most important characters and surely the funniest is Pete Davidson’s inclusion as the Blackguard. This comedian has proved over and over again that his acting skills are at par with actors like Elba. He is funny in almost every circumstance and can give a big challenge to Macy’s Deadpool.

Suicide Squad 2

This comparison is not totally fair I know but bear with me for a moment, originating as a time-traveling small-time thug, the organization 1000 recruits him for various tasks and operations. The catch here is that while Deadpool is witty and smart, Blackguard is a person with minimal intelligence and this take on a villain is hilarious, to begin with.

8. Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian)

The rise of Batman in the city of Gotham paved way for various vigilantes to arise in a plethora of different costumes, on which was Abner Krill a.k.a Polka Dot Man.

Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian)

He has a very tragic story as he only became the Polka Dot wearing villain in order to fight Batman and satiate his ego which all of us know couldn’t have been good for in any scenario. David Dastmalchian is pretty aware of how superhero movies are made as he has been a part of The Dark Knight and Ant-Man so it will be a great experience for him to take this fragile character and come up with something big.

9. Sol Soria (Alice Braga)

Alice Braga will portray the South American rebel Sol Soria. According to various theories, it’s a gender-swapped version of Juan Soria who had the ability to use nanites injection for opening almost any lock in the world.

Suicide Squad 2

Her story of joining the Suicide Squad is also a bit tragic like Polka Dot Man as her ambition to be a member of the Justice League and the rejection that followed made her go astray on the criminal path. Phew! Too much for being friends with Superman and Batman.

10. Savant (Michael Rooker)

Brian Durlin a.k.a Savant is set to be played by Michael Rooker who is going to rock a wig I suppose for the role in Suicide Squad 2.

Savant (Michael Rooker)

Savant or Brian is a spoilt brat who has inherited a humongous amount of money. He turns to Gotham in hopes of being a vigilante but his ways and methods are not welcomed by the Dark Knight of Gotham, consequently, he turns evil and has several chemical imbalances that cause lapses of memory.

We have seen Rooker as the deadly whistling Yondu in the MCU’s Guardians of The Galaxy vol. 1.

11. TDK (Nathan Fillion)

If this was a trivia most of the people not aware of James Gunn’s filmmaking and History of DC comics would fail miserably as the character is a creation of Gunn.

TDK (Nathan Fillion)

The comic book version had a different name which was obscure, Arm-Fall-Off-Boy! Yes, you read it right that was the name, the powers included removal of limbs in order to use them in different combat scenarios.

TDK literally translates into The Detachable Kid!

Nathan Fillion is a close friend of Gunn and has been a part of Guardians of the Galaxy, Castle, Saving Private Ryan, etc. and is surely up and ready to be detached in Suicide Squad 2!

12. Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior)

The Portuguese sensation Daniela Melchior’s first appearance in an American film will be as Ratchatcher 2 in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2.

Suicide Squad 2

After her impressive roles in the Portuguese TV and film industry, she has finally landed a role in an American venture. Ratcatcher 2 is a nemesis of Batman and has the ability to control an army of sewer rats, manipulation via cyanide gas, and her faithful gas gun.

13. Mongal (Mayling NG)

Mayling has already been in a DC superhero movie alongside Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. She is a black belt and well versed in martial arts, in her real life.

Suicide Squad

The character of Mongal is the successor of the deceased Mongul The Elder. She is a foe to none other than Superman himself, the powers at her disposal are superhuman strength, durability, agility, stamina, and even energy projection.

14. King Shark (Steve Agee unconfirmed)

Although it’s confirmed it’s highly unlikely that Steve Agee won’t be giving his voice for the humanoid shark.

King Shark (Steve Agee unconfirmed)

As the details are very much shrouded at this point the comic version had the ability to resist telepathy, regeneration of health, superhuman strength, enhanced sense, and Sonar capability. King Shark has fought against Superman then known as Superboy and also Aquaman.

15. Weasel (Sean Gunn)

The James Gunn movie has adapted the John Monroe’s version of Weasel for which Sean Gunn will provide the voice acting as well as the motion capture. He has already been a part MCU in various films as the motion capture artist for Rocket Racoon.

Suicide Squad 2

Weasel was a result of continuous name-calling by his peers which led him to a destructive path of violence and murder. The New 52′ version of the Weasle had even more animalistic traits.

16. Javelin (Flula Borg)

As the name suggests the Javelin played by Flula Borg, is a former German athlete who turned to the life of crime. His specialist techniques of throwing his Javelin made him even more lethal.

Javelin (Flula Borg)

He has been associated with various characters amongst which Green Lantern is his most infamous enemy.

17. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)

Waller has been the link between the various supervillains. She has also appeared in Arrow, Green Lantern, and Suicide Squad 1. She is one of the indispensable characters and that is why the amazing talent of Viola Davis will again be there commanding the most brutal villains at her fingertips.

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)

Viola Davis’s last take at Amanda was picture perfect as she did justice to the character and tried to salvage something from the sinking ship of Suicide Squad 1.

“Somethin’ tells me a whole lotta people are about to die!” – Harley Quinn

So those were all the DC characters that will be in the James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2.

This time the casting approach was more or less, influenced by the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
