Published

Tell Me Lies season 3 is almost here, so brace yourself for another season of lies, deceit, and ugly fights! In case you don’t remember what happened the previous season, this article has got you covered. Season 2 of this impossible guilty pleasure started with Lucy and Stephen maintaining a safe distance; everyone around them was glad that they’d figured out that they were not right for each other. But Stephen and Lucy love drama, and they struggle to function in life without some toxicity keeping them on the edge. Throughout the summer, Stephen was with Diana, but he still had his eyes on Lucy. Lucy too tried to move on, but she eventually realized that she still had feelings for Stephen. They were bad for each other, but they couldn’t live without one another, and thus trouble began! We’ve listed the most important details from season 2 that you just can’t miss before watching season 3.

Spoiler Alert

Stephen & Lucy: Did they get back together?

After teasing the viewers with the usual ‘will they, won’t they,’ in season 2, Stephen and Lucy end up together (in the 2008 timeline). Stephen had assumed that being with Diana would help him sort out his career, and when his objective remained unfulfilled, he started to drift away. Diana fooled Stephen into believing that she’d scored low on the LSAT and that she wasn’t as career-driven anymore. She had already figured out that Stephen didn’t really care about her and he was only with her because her father was influential. Diana couldn’t risk breaking up with Stephen, knowing how manipulative and vengeful he could be. So, she made sure that Stephen found her intolerable, and he ultimately broke up with her.

Stephen had already decided to be with Lucy. She was attracted to Stephen, but at the same time, she couldn’t really get past the trauma Stephen had put her through. Immediately after they got physically intimate, Lucy regretted her decision. She figured that maybe getting back with Leo, her then-boyfriend, was a safer choice than ending up with Stephen. It was clearly a decision she’d made in haste, and although she didn’t want to get physically close with Leo yet, she gave in to it just to prove that she was still into him. Stephen was shocked when he saw Lucy and Leo together at the Christmas party. He couldn’t quite grasp the fact that immediately after sleeping with him, Lucy had chosen to be with Leo. So, to mess with their relationship, Stephen told Leo that he’d hooked up with Lucy. Leo, who had anger issues, didn’t take it well, and ended up physically assaulting Stephen. Stephen knew Leo was a short-tempered man who would react violently if he just nudged him in that direction.

Leo’s outburst helped Stephen win Lucy’s sympathy. He was the victim in this case, and Lucy couldn’t bring herself to forgive Leo after seeing how violent he could get. Just when it looked like Lucy and Stephen were finally back together, Evan decided to come clean to Stephen. Stephen knew that Evan had cheated on Bree with someone, but he had no clue that his one-night stand had been with Lucy. While he pretended to not be affected by the truth, in reality, he’d already made up his mind to get back to Evan. While Stephen didn’t break up with Lucy after he found out about Evan and Lucy’s secret, it was evident that he wouldn’t let it go.

Moreover, Lucy’s friend, Lydia, had told Stephen about all the vile comments Lucy had made about Stephen when they were not together. Lydia and Lucy’s friendship suffered a blow after Lucy sided with Pippa. Lydia’s brother, Chris, was accused of drugging and assaulting Pippa, and Lucy supported Pippa, following which Lydia chose to cut all ties with her. The fact that Stephen and Lydia were together in 2015 suggests that things ended on a nasty note between Stephen and Lucy. But then again, even after eight years, they were still attracted to each other. They felt the compulsive need to hook up, and on the morning of Bree’s wedding, they finally did. This might well change the dynamics between Lucy and Stephen all over again!  Will they give into their toxic on-and-off cycle, or will it just be a one-night thing? We’ll soon find out.

Bree & Oliver: What led to their breakup?

Bree and Evan broke up in season 2. When Evan came clean to Bree about cheating on her, she decided to spend some time reflecting on how she felt about the situation they were in. Now, Bree didn’t know that Evan cheated on her with Lucy, and this becomes an important revelation in season 2. During her break with Evan, Bree started to fancy her college professor’s husband, Oliver. He had a way with words, and Bree couldn’t get enough of his irresistible charm. Oliver was a professor at Baird, and she knew that an affair with a married man came with its own challenges. But somehow, she couldn’t keep him off her mind.

A brief physical contact was enough to make her fantasize about him, and while she considered going back to Evan since he was the safer choice, she was appalled when he proved his double standards. Bree had lied to Evan about sleeping with someone else, and his reaction was quite extreme. Bree couldn’t believe that, while he expected her to forgive him, if she’d done the same, he would’ve never considered giving her another chance. Bree figured she would rather risk falling for her professor than be with a man like Evan.

Her passionate relationship with Oliver kept her on her toes, and she soon started to crave permanence. She felt uncomfortable whenever she came across Oliver and Marianne together, and she figured that if he was in love with her, then maybe he would end his marriage as well. But Bree soon discovered that Oliver and Marianne had an arrangement. Marianne not only knew about his affair with Bree, but her husband also shared details about his relationship with the college-goer. It was somewhat of a kink for the couple, and Oliver was apparently under the assumption that dating a married man was Bree’s fantasy, and he didn’t expect things to get this serious. This surely wasn’t Oliver’s first rodeo, and it is safe to assume that he knew how emotionally damaging the affair could be for Bree, but he chose to completely disregard it. The fact that Marianne seemed emotional after Bree accused her of being a vile woman further emphasized that she wasn’t really happy in her marriage. Perhaps the only reason she’d agreed to the arrangement was because she loved him dearly, and she wasn’t ready to part ways with him even though their marriage had left her emotionally drained. Marianne appeared to be someone who was in control of her life, but we eventually find out that really wasn’t the case. She chose to be stuck in a marriage where her opinions or feelings weren’t respected. Bree ultimately decided not to waste her time being with someone she didn’t see a future with anymore. But the question remains, is she over Oliver yet? Or will she try to seek revenge on him?

Bree & Evan: What happened on the wedding day?

After Bree decided to part ways with Oliver, she likely found her way back to Evan, because we all know that they were ready to get married in 2015. Bree and Evan craved a certain permanence in their romantic lives; that was possibly why they gravitated back to each other. But the ending of season 2 confirmed that the past would return to haunt Bree and Evan.

Evan’s biggest mistake was trusting Stephen. After Stephen took the blame for writing the letter to the principal that destroyed Drew, Evan thought maybe he too should come clean. Although the letter was actually written by Lucy, Stephen chose to take the blame, because he felt the need to prove his loyalty to Lucy. Stephen was a master manipulator, and even though he had just confessed to something that had been bothering Wrigley for a while, Wrigley ultimately forgave him. Evan assumed that if Wrigley could forgive Stephen for the letter that practically destroyed Drew’s life before he ultimately succumbed to an overdose, maybe Stephen too would forgive him. But Evan didn’t consider that Stephen and Wrigley weren’t the same person; Stephen had always held his grudges close to his heart.

So, when Evan told him about his one-night stand with Lucy, Stephen pretended not to be affected by it, but deep down he chose to never let it go. In 2015, on the day Bree and Evan were getting married, Stephen shared a recording of Evan from the day he confessed to cheating on Bree with Lucy. Years had passed, yet Stephen was just the same. The fact that he’d recorded the conversation and waited for the right moment to use it goes on to show the kind of person Stephen had always been. In season 3, we’ll likely find out if Bree chose to marry Evan even after she learned the truth. If she does so, she will end up in a loveless marriage. Bree won’t take Evan’s decision to keep this detail from her for so long. The lack of transparency could be the end of their relationship; also, Bree and Lucy’s friendship will also be on the line. Even if Lucy and Evan tried to explain that their one-night stand didn’t mean anything, Bree perhaps will struggle to accept it.

Pippa & Diana: How did they become friends?

Pippa had been through hell in season 2 of Tell Me Lies. After her relationship with Wrigley ended, she was harassed by the college football team. She found an escape from the humiliation when she was introduced to Chris, but even he turned out to be a monster. Lydia’s brother, Chris, was a freshman, and Pippa enjoyed showing him around campus, but things took a dark turn when Chris drugged and assaulted Pippa. She couldn’t really come to terms with what had happened. Even if Diana and Lucy tried to discuss what had transpired, she chose to dodge the topic. She refused to see herself as the victim, and it took her time to really accept what had happened.

In the meantime, Pippa and Wrigley reconnect. Wrigley realized the impact Pippa had on his life, and he missed her dearly. They started to spend more and more time together. Wrigley felt comfortable sharing his thoughts with someone who knew him very well, and Pippa didn’t mind having him around either. After everything she’d been through, Pippa preferred steering clear of drama, and Wrigley liked this new version of her. Even if Wrigley hoped for something more from their friendship, Pippa wasn’t ready. They did get physically close, but Pippa never really considered getting into a romantic relationship with Wrigley again. Pippa and Diana had a crush on each other, but neither of them confessed their feelings. Though the 2015 timeline confirms that Pippa and Diana ended up together, and they were quite happy in their relationship.

Pippa and Lucy’s relationship took an awkward turn in season 2 when Lucy decided to share Pippa’s trauma out loud. After taking her time, Pippa had finally gathered the courage to share some of the details of the night of the assault with Lucy and Diana. When Lucy learned that the assault case against Chris was about to be dropped by the Student Council, she decided to do something about it. She at first tried to explain to Molly, who was on the disciplinary board, that the victim hadn’t lied. To further justify her stance, she blurted out that she was also one of Chris’ victims. Pippa felt weird about the situation, and she chose not to be a part of the conversation. Lucy wondered if she’d made a mistake, but she believed that her intention was honest. Diana was enraged when she discovered that Lucy had told Molly every detail that Pippa had confided in them from the night. It wasn’t Lucy’s story to share, especially since Pippa was not comfortable discussing the details of her assault. Pippa already knew that both Bree and Lucy were extremely flawed friends, so she wasn’t really surprised.

I wonder if Pippa and Diana have secretly conjured a plan to take down Stephen (also Lucy?) in 2015. Pippa didn’t trust Stephen for obvious reasons, and considering the past they shared, it’ll make sense if the pair does something completely unexpected to punish Stephen and Lucy, who’d practically destroyed lives. From covering up his involvement in the car crash and letting Drew take all the blame, to Lucy’s letter that destroyed Drew’s life completely to framing Pippa for the letter and, of course, appropriating Pippa’s assault and making it public, Stephen and Lucy’s toxicity knew no bounds! Also, Diana is possibly the only one who can outwit Stephen so here’s hoping she will find a way to get back at her ex in season 3!
