Someone should take a class on ‘how to keep secrets’ in Baird! In episode 4 of Tell Me Lies season 3, a friend casually discusses the complex medical procedure that she has to navigate to get an abortion, and the next thing she knows, her pregnancy has become public knowledge! Diana didn’t think that Molly would end up discussing her situation with Evan, knowing that he was Stephen’s best friend. Molly was clearly attached to Evan, although he strictly maintained the no-strings-attached dynamic. While discussing protection and pregnancy scares, she blurted out that there was someone they knew who was pregnant. It was, of course, to add some spice to their conversation and grab Evan’s attention. Now, Evan always wanted to get back at Stephen for manipulating him, so he ended up sharing his piece of gossip, just to mess up Stephen’s life. And he was right! Stephen was extremely bothered about the whole situation. Well played, Evan!
Spoiler Alert
Will Diana get an abortion?
Diana was dead against even considering keeping the baby, or what was, according to Wrigley, just a cluster of cells at this point. The moment she’d discovered she was pregnant, she knew she wanted to get an abortion. Arriving at the decision wasn’t really challenging for her, but the procedure and formalities left her exhausted. It was just a hurdle that she desperately wanted to overcome as soon as possible, but it wasn’t as simple as she’d anticipated. The last thing Diana needed was for Stephen to find out about her pregnancy. She couldn’t believe that Molly couldn’t keep such a private conversation to herself. Stephen wanted her to keep the baby, or at least consider it. Well, it wasn’t the prospect of fatherhood that excited Stephen, but the possibility of being reintroduced to Diana’s elite circle and basically using the child to manipulate her. Now that he was not with Lucy anymore, he thought maybe this was exactly what he needed to move forward in his career. Diana was appalled when Stephen tried to establish how keeping the child would help her mend her relationship with her father. But then again, what more can one expect from a narcissistic man like Stephen? Diana made it clear that she had decided to have an abortion and wasn’t open to any discussions. She emphasized that she despised Stephen to the point that getting rid of his child was the highlight of her year. Stephen left the room disappointed; things hadn’t really gone how he’d hoped.
Is Alex the new Stephen?
Lucy always found herself gravitating towards emotionally unavailable men, and with Alex, it was no different. She claimed that she had no intention of getting attached to him, but he reminded her of Stephen, and that’s already bad news. She readily agreed to hang out with him when he called her. She seemed nervous as well as excited when she saw his call, suggesting that maybe she was once again dreaming of ‘fixing’ another bad boy. Alex established that it wasn’t a date, and Lucy agreed that it was just a casual meetup. She was a bit embarrassed at first, but Alex wanted her to know that he didn’t judge people. Although he wasn’t like Lucy, who needed to be told while having sex that she was a terrible person, he clarified that he’d been asked to do far worse, so she didn’t have any reason to worry. Lucy despised herself, and it was reflected in their conversation. When she noticed Max at the bar, she explained to Alex how she’d been terrible to him, even though he’d always been nice to her. She felt bad about the way she’d treated him, and believed that she owed him an apology.
Alex insisted she go and apologize to Max at that very moment. Lucy was hesitant, since Max was clearly on a date and she didn’t want to ruin it. Alex insinuated that maybe Lucy actually enjoyed hurting people, and she didn’t actually feel as bad as she’d stated. To prove him wrong, Lucy walked up to Max and apologized. It was awkward, but she felt this compulsion to do it. Alex already has so much power over her, so will he eventually become the next Stephen in Lucy’s life? Alex wasn’t interested in manipulating other aspects of Lucy’s life; his interest was purely sex-oriented. He’d come to realize that Lucy had a thing for being humiliated, and he simply tapped into her vulnerability. She felt the constant need to be punished, and he’d, in a way, become her outlet. All’s well as long as Stephen doesn’t get a whiff of this new arrangement! It’ll be interesting to see if Lucy will develop feelings for Alex, or if the guy who doesn’t ‘do relationships’ will end up falling for her. Also, I can’t wait for the Alex-Stephen face-off—he is no Leo, so dealing with Alex won’t be as easy. Considering he’s a postgraduate psychology student, a man like Stephen will surely pique his interest, and perhaps the only way Stephen can take him down is by exposing his side hustle to the college authorities. It’s only episode 4, but there’s already so much drama!
Is Lucy in trouble again?
Immediately after his conversation with Diana, Stephen decided to turn Lucy’s life into a living hell. Before he walked out of Diana’s room, she warned him that he no longer had any control over her, so he could try his manipulation game with someone else. Stephen took her comment seriously—he felt defeated, so to make himself feel good, he decided to turn Lucy’s life into a living hell. He decided to send a message to Caitie, Chris’ victim. Stephen had figured that the confession video would look worse if Lucy actively joined hands with Caitie to expose Chris, and he desperately hoped she would fall into the trap. Lucy was surprised when Caitie stated that she knew that she was one of Chris’ victims as well. Caitie wanted to reopen the case, and she figured that if Lucy also lodged a statement, then maybe she’d have a better chance at putting pressure on the authorities to take action against Chris. Lucy made it clear that she wanted to stay out of trouble, and she had no interest in speaking publicly about her experience. When Lucy refused to come forward with her story, Stephen created a ‘Chris is a rapist’ page and mentioned that Caitie and Lucy were his victims. Lucy knew she was in trouble; Stephen was actively trying to weaponize something she’d said without any serious thought against her. She figured that he had every intention of using the tape, but I guess there’ll be a catch. He’ll likely ask her to do something for him if she doesn’t wish for the tape to be exposed. Pippa tried to cover for Lucy when Bree found out about the abuse; this suggests that Pippa might step up and speak on behalf of Lucy if Stephen ever made the confession tape public. Lucy later spoke to Diana, the only other person who knew her secret, and her only advice to Lucy was to not do anything. She believed that Stephen wanted a reaction out of her, and the best thing she could do was wait for things to calm down instead of reacting badly to the situation.
Are Bree and Wrigley in love?
The most unexpected romance has started to bloom in season 3! Bree and Wrigley evidently had a connection. While Wrigley and Pippa had reconnected, they were better as friends than lovers. Pippa dumped her plan with her boyfriend to spend time with Diana; that’s reason enough for her, I suppose, to realize that she is in love with Diana, not Wrigley. As much as he appreciated Pippa staying by his side during the most difficult phase of his life, the way he felt for Bree was different. Considering we already know that Diana and Pippa ended up together, hopefully in a couple of episodes, Pippa and Wrigley will finally gather the courage to be honest about their relationship. In episode 4, when Oliver and Bree crossed paths in the hallway, he dragged her to his office and complained about how needy and insecure she was. He had come to realize that he could easily hurt Bree if he spoke about her childhood as a foster kid, and he used it to his advantage. In the previous episode, Bree had texted him a photo of her and his latest catch, and Oliver didn’t seem too bothered about getting exposed. He figured that Bree still cared deeply about him, and that was why she’d been keeping an eye on him. Bree felt worthless after her conversation with Oliver, and Wrigley helped cheer her up. When Wrigley mentioned how obsessed Evan was with her, she wondered if he deserved another chance. The next morning, when she learned about Chris, she figured that unlike most men on campus, Evan was actually a decent human being who regretted his mistake and didn’t throw tantrums, but instead gave her space when she needed it, and he’d been waiting for her even though there was no guarantee that she would even come back to him. Bree ultimately decided to give Evan another go.
Will Stephen actively try to destroy Bree and Evan’s marriage?
During the ending of Tell Me Lies season 3, episode 4, we are transported to the 2015 timeline again. Bree and Evan are in love, and they have their first dance together as a married couple. Stephen is disappointed with how smoothly things turned out for them. He perhaps attended the ceremony simply to ruin Evan’s big day, but here he is, at the wedding dinner, hopeless and defeated. Since his plan had failed, he wondered if he was successful in at least making Lucy feel jealous. When he asks Lucy if him being with Lydia makes her feel uncomfortable, she reassures him that she got her validation during the wedding weekend, because by sleeping with Lucy, he has proved that he really hasn’t changed at all. Lucy experiences a sense of satisfaction in knowing that Stephen wouldn’t change for anyone—perhaps the thought that she wasn’t good enough had bothered her for a long while, but now she knows that she had never been the problem.
Wrigley decides to have a dance with Pippa, and we find out that Pippa is possibly the only person who knows about his feelings for Bree. Yes, even in 2015, Wrigley is madly in love with Bree! It looks like a compromise that Wrigley and Bree mutually made. So finally, we now know who the mysterious person who’d been calling Bree is! She’d mentioned that she wanted to ‘feel like a good person’ and had begged him not to call her. She hates herself for cheating on Evan, and desperately wants to move on from Wrigley. They are in love, but maybe the future that Bree envisions didn’t align with Wrigley’s goals. Bree adores Evan, so maybe they’d both decided to not hurt him, since they didn’t have a future together anyway. Now, whatever choice Wrigley and Bree made was personal, but the problem now is that Stephen got a whiff of their affair. Stephen notices Bree and Wrigley’s eye contact on the dance floor, and he becomes suspicious. He picks up Wrigley’s phone that was left unattended at the table, and as soon as he goes through the recently contacted tab, he figures he is right after all. Stephen has information that he can use to manipulate people, so it is VERY likely that he will make Bree and Wrigley’s lives miserable. Or just out of sheer jealousy and hate, he’ll walk up to Evan, tell him about his wife’s affair, and leave. He’ll plant the seed of suspicion that will have a lasting impact on Evan and Bree’s relationship. Brace yourself because things are about to get messy!
