Tell Me Lies season 2’s ending left us with a bunch of questions. The most important one is—will Bree marry Evan or will she walk away? Also, did Bree and Oliver’s relationship end completely, or did they stay in touch? While we’ve no idea how season 3 will unfold, we’ve decided to make some wild guesses because why not? Tell Me Lies season 2 has been a whirlwind and the finale a shocker. In the beginning, it seemed Lucy had learned her lessons and was trying her best to stay away from trouble, but she was incurably addicted to Stephen, and naturally, she made the mistake of getting back with him again! We know that Stephen and Lucy were not together in 2015, so what led to their separation? Here’s our guess.
Spoiler Alert
Will Stephen and Lucy break up again?
Duh yes! Stephen and Lucy are a toxic pair who should never have been together, but they always find their way back to each other. And at one point you feel it’s better if they stayed together because then they would not be able to hurt others. But the problem in such relationships is that the pair is never content. Stephen and Lucy cannot be in a healthy relationship because they both crave disaster, and they invite outside elements to drive them to the point of madness. Their pleasure lies in betrayal, deceit, and revenge. Leo had freaked out the first time he realized how Lucy was turned on by angry sex. He thought it was weird that she wanted their first time to be a rough one, but that was something Lucy had become used to while being with Stephen. He had messed her up so badly that she had adopted his traits. She needed constant drama to feel good about herself, and while she tried to recognize her problematic side, she ultimately gave in to her dark desires. Lucy could not deny she loved Stephen; she needed him because he was just like her. Of course, Stephen was ten times worse, but you get the drift. So, when Stephen finally got into a relationship with Lucy again, Evan told him his secret.
Even though Lucy had not cheated on him and they were both beginning afresh, Stephen is not someone to ever get over the fact that his girlfriend had slept with one of his best friends. He will hold on to the grudge long and hard just like he did when he found out that Diana had once slept with Wrigley. Only this time it was Lucy, and he was obsessed with her more than he ever was with Diana. Assumably, Stephen will mentally torture Lucy. He will make her pay for the one bad decision she made after getting drunk. Maybe Lucy will never find out the reason behind his behavior, but she will try to put up with him as long as possible. Lucy will be at Stephen’s mercy—he will decide whether she will spend a day happily or will hate herself from the minute she wakes up. It’s such a shame that Lucy tried so hard to put together her broken pieces after Stephen left her, but she failed to be patient and got distracted. Stephen will break her once again. Perhaps it was after their second breakup that Lucy met Max again, and that was how they got into a relationship. But as we already know, that will not last long either.
The minute she saw Stephen at Bree’s pre-wedding party, she knew she had to be with him. She had to find out if she still had the same effect on him. Lucy had to establish that she would always be the one Stephen would desire, even when he was engaged. Maybe that’s the kind of relationship they will always share. They will be in relationships only to have affairs with one another. Their pleasure in cheating on their partners would keep them going. I do not see them in a healthy, happy relationship, tucked away from the world, living in the countryside. They need the drama, they need people they can constantly hurt and feel good about, and they will probably be each other’s secret forever.
Will Bree marry Evan?
There are two ways Bree can deal with the situation– either ignore it and deal with it later, or face it. It will not be surprising if Bree chooses to walk down the aisle even after finding out that her boyfriend once cheated on her with her best friend. Evan could provide her with a secure future, and that was all she wanted. To break up with him on their wedding day will be quite a drastic decision that I’m not sure Bree is capable of making. Maybe she will instead choose to use his betrayal as her trump card—she will get away with things by reminding him how he had been unfaithful to her. If she confronts Evan immediately, they might not get married, but that seems unlikely. Tell Me Lies will not deal with the situation in the most obvious way; it will complicate it even more and reveal the dark sides of its characters. For Evan, it will be a sad affair. He will be devastated if Bree calls off the wedding, and he will be depressed if Bree marries him but chooses to maintain a distance from him because of his past mistakes. It seems Evan has a lifelong punishment awaiting him. While Evan will always have the option to divorce Bree, then again he loves her, and he might just be with her in the hopes that someday she will forgive him.
Is Bree still in contact with Oliver?
I think Bree is still in contact with Oliver. In season 2, Bree repeatedly received calls from a number, and there was a point when she mentioned that the only reason she was marrying Evan was because he could provide her with the future she wanted. Bree wanted to start a family, and that was only possible with Evan. This conversation suggests that Bree might still be in contact with Oliver. My best guess is that Bree never got over Oliver. Maybe she agreed to be the third person in Oliver and Marianne’s marriage. But she had realized that there was no future in that relationship, and she had to be with someone who could offer her some certainty. Will Oliver leave Marianne for Bree? That seems unlikely. Oliver would always want to be in an open relationship/marriage, and that was not something Bree was comfortable with. Even if they end up together hypothetically, Bree would always fear him cheating on her, and it would be quite a disaster. I feel it is highly likely that Bree will continue to have an affair with Oliver even after her marriage to Evan. She would justify herself, thinking that Evan cheated on her with her best friend and there could be nothing worse than that. It seems quite hopeless, to be honest, since none of them will ever be happy or even slightly content, but given how the show has unfolded so far, this is my best possible guess.
Bree will likely choose to distance herself from Lucy, and it makes complete sense. I doubt if Max will ever get over the fact that his girlfriend texted her ex to watch her have sex with him in the pool. That’s quite mean and unforgivable. And even if Max decides to give her another chance, we already know Stephen will forever be a part of her life in one way or another. The only people who have found love and happiness are Pippa and Diana. They knew what they were searching for and stuck to their core values, and perhaps that is what made all the difference.
Season three is definitely going to be full of drama and chaos, and we’re here for it. Watching a bunch of problematic people making one ridiculous decision after another has strangely turned into our guilty pleasure. Just like Lucy knows Stephen is bad for her, we too know that there is nothing quite worth taking back home from the series, yet we always turn up when a new season drops! Jokes apart, I think Tell Me Lies has dealt with certain issues quite well. They have explored toxic relationships in an entertaining way, sometimes a little too extreme, but then again, we love the drama. Also, none of the characters are to root for; they are supremely flawed, yet even without any hero/heroine element, the series has managed to retain our attention. I was not even disappointed seeing Lucy make one bad decision after another in season two because the first season had prepared me well enough for this. Yes, Lucy is the protagonist, but she cannot be trusted, and she is not meant to be liked. She is flawed, she makes bad choices, she has no idea what her heart wants, and she is driven by this strange animalistic instinct that she has no control over. But Lucy is just another messed up human being who cannot be dismissed just because she does not fit into our idea of morality, and I think the fact that she makes us question our judgment is quite an achievement for the show.
