The Bondsman’s ending hinged on Hub, Maryanne, Kitty, and Cade stopping the demon Lilith from destroying the world. But since Lilith had possessed the body of Sheryl, Hub wasn’t sure he was up to the task. So, a few months before Hub bit the dust and came back from the dead, he got into a fight with Lucky because the latter had won over Hub’s ex-wife right when they were going through a rough patch in their relationship. Hub was thrown out of Lucky’s bar, but instead of getting his affairs in order, the bounty hunter decided to get drunk and wait for an opportunity to kill Lucky. When that moment came, Hub mistook Sheryl for Lucky, because she was wearing Lucky’s hat, and killed her. Instead of owning up to his mistake, Hub buried Sheryl in his backyard and pretended that he didn’t know anything about the incident. Now, when he was brought back from the dead, everyone wondered why Hub was on his way to hell in the first place. Hub was also confused at first, but it eventually dawned on him that he was being punished for that mortal sin he had committed. And in the finale of The Bondsman, he was forced to reckon with his past as Sheryl came back from the grave as the vessel of Lilith. Did Hub kill Lilith, and Sheryl along with her, or did he save Sheryl and doom the world? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Midge Reunites With Hub
The final episode of The Bondsman opened with Hub admitting to his family that he was the reason Sheryl died. Sure, he killed Sheryl by mistake, but that didn’t discount the fact that Hub entered Lucky’s bar with the intention of killing Lucky. That made Hub as despicable as Lucky in Maryanne’s eyes. Hence, she decided to take her son and get as far away as possible from Hub, at least until she had cooled down. Since Hub didn’t have any idea how to get to Lilith and stop her from completing the inverted pentagram that she was creating over Landry without the help of his family, he went back to uprooting the tree stump in his backyard. That’s when Ali Khan dropped off Midge, who was killed in the penultimate episode by a demon, at the Halloran residence so that they could work together and save the world. Hub was relieved to see that Midge was alive, but he didn’t want to take part in the mission to save Lilith because he wasn’t in the mood. Midge told Hub that if they completed the devil’s job, they’d be the only ones going to hell. If they failed to stop Lilith, everyone would be going to hell. Midge was ready to sacrifice herself to save her son, and she was of the opinion that if Hub loved his family too, he’d do the same. Apparently, that was enough to get Hub to listen to the reason behind Lucifer’s demon-killing mission.
As per Midge, Lilith was God’s favorite because of her amazing voice, which is quite fitting in this case, because the Hallorans (including Maryanne) were musicians. Since the other angels of heaven envied Lilith, they “tricked” her into joining Satan’s rebellion against God; the details of this trickery are not revealed to us, by the way. Hence, God banished Lilith to hell, i.e., a place with no music whatsoever. Now, Lilith has been trying to get away from the Devil for ages, but every time she escaped, she was recaptured. Midge insinuated that Satan was raping Lilith, and that’s why she managed to develop powers that would cause men to rip off their jaws and women to become subservient to her. Since God didn’t want to welcome Lilith to heaven, and hell was unlivable for her, I guess she had decided to make this mortal realm her demented playground, thereby defying both God and Lucifer. So, if Midge and Hub captured Lilith, they’d be sending her to her abuser, and if they allowed her to be free, they’d be dooming the world; a real moral conundrum.
Hub Saves Sheryl
Anyway, while Midge and Hub were discussing the lore and motivations of Lilith, she (in Sheryl’s body) decided to hijack a diner, just because the music in there was good, and killed the men and turned the women into her followers. Back at the Halloran residence, Lucky showed up with the police as they wanted to nab Hub for doing Satan’s work, but all they found was Kitty, since Hub and Midge had gone into the woods to attract Lilith with their massive sound system and trap her. That didn’t stop Lucky from getting Maryanne locked up for colluding with Hub in his satanic practices and forcing Cade to testify against Hub if he wanted to see his mother walk free. Lucky’s arm-twisting didn’t work on the young kid, and he walked out on the conniving rascal. Hence, the Sheriff’s department kept Maryanne and Kitty in their custody with the intention of using them to bait Hub and arrest him because they think he’s a serial killer, not a demon killer. Maryanne was unwilling to comply, but when Officer Ruby threatened to arrest Cade under the suspicion of working with Hub, she had no option but to give in. Soon after Maryanne had sent a voice note to Hub telling him to meet her at their favorite bar, The Boxcar, Ruby learned about the resurrected Sheryl, which proved that all those who were saying that Hub was killing demons to save the world weren’t lying.
Speaking of the demon hunters, Midge foreshadowed the dilemma that Hub would face when he would see Sheryl’s vessel being puppeteered by Lilith and said that she should be the one to kill Lilith instead of Hub. The bounty hunter assured Midge that he’d get the job done, but when push came to shove, Hub hesitated as Lilith promised to let Sheryl live if he released her from the trap. Midge urged Hub to blow Sheryl’s head off, thereby killing Lilith and saving the world. But Hub saw this as his one chance to correct the mistake that had seemingly condemned him, and he took it. Lilith left Sheryl’s body and possessed a crow (the bird was a recurring motif throughout the show as a symbol of death). Hub broke the seal of the trap and allowed Lilith to leave. Sheryl was back, alive but a little traumatized. The claw mark on Hub’s arm was gone, which meant that he was no longer an employee of Satan. Midge was obviously heartbroken by Hub’s decision, but Hub didn’t care about all that since he had rectified the biggest error of his life. He took Sheryl to the bar, reunited her with everyone, and announced to his family that he was free. Well, technically not, because he was still allegedly guilty in the eyes of the law of killing all those people who had been possessed by demons and hence was arrested by Ruby. Maryanne retired to the green room to deal with the complex emotions of knowing that her ex-husband was a potential cold-blooded murderer, Sheryl’s savior, and also the harbinger of doom after freeing Lilith.
Lilith’s Deal For Hub
In The Bondsman’s ending, Lilith (or the crow she was in) cornered Maryanne and made her her new vessel. When Lucky came to check on her, she killed him. Then Lilith took the stage and used Maryanne’s beautiful voice (which is so fitting and devious) to hold the entire pub hostage, and she proposed a deal to Hub: help her defeat Satan and ensure that Maryanne lives or go against her and cause the deaths of everyone in Landry (including Kitty and Cade) and possibly the rest of the world. Lilith said that just because Hub had saved Sheryl and canceled his trip to hell, that doesn’t mean that Satan will stop looking for a way to bring Hub to the underworld. The show hasn’t revealed Lucifer’s true character, but I guess he will be miffed to find out that Hub used a loophole to get out of his deal and set Lilith free. He’ll probably show up in Landry and wreak havoc.
I don’t know how powerful Lilith is, but maybe with Hub’s help, she’ll be able to defeat Satan. However, Hub isn’t the type of guy who is going to do Lilith’s bidding just to keep Maryanne. He’ll try to find yet another loophole to save his ex-wife. For that, he’ll probably need Midge and Ali Khan, because they probably have a better idea of how all these demonic practices work than Hub. Right now, Hub is in their bad books because he has ruined their dynamic with Satan. So, he’ll need to win them over, without letting Lilith know, and then somehow devise a way to free Maryanne from Lilith’s clutches and also avoid going to hell. Well, that’s what I think about the ending of The Bondsman and what is going to happen in a yet-to-be-announced Season 2 of the show. What are your thoughts on the same?
