I don’t know about you, but something about The Buccaneers season 2’s ending has me absolutely confused about how I feel about these flawed characters and this flawed plot. I suppose, in a way, the show brings modern sensibilities into a system that is almost ancient and makes you feel like nothing is ever going to be okay. But with the way this season has ended, I wonder if anybody on the show is ever going to be happy or if they’re all going to be stuck in an endless loop of shame and betrayal. I really don’t understand, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. While nothing has been announced yet about a season 3 for the show, that ending is as sequel-baiting as it gets and leaves us yearning for what’s to come, especially with the announcement of a brand new character, and one who seems to be shocking not just in title but also in behavior, based on conversation. But that’s enough for my riddles and non-spoilery bits; let’s jump straight into the ending of The Buccaneers season 2 and see what we can expect from season 3.
Spoiler Alert
Why Does Nan Not Want Guy Anymore?
When the newspapers make the rounds, Lizzy immediately assumes that it was Nan who told them about the affair. But while there’s obviously no name in mention, Lizzy believes Nan is the only one who knew about the affair, which means she’s the only one who could have leaked the news. Sure, Mabel knows, but she wouldn’t betray her sister; there’s no doubt about that. But more importantly, she sees a wild streak in Nan, making her sure that she did this out of vindictiveness. However, what she doesn’t know is that Hector had a hunch, and he immediately used it to make his life easier. I don’t know about you, but that conversation between Hector and his dad made it quite obvious that this was Hector’s doing. Especially because he instantly swooped in as a knight in shining armor, or should I say, politician in a shining suit? Now, Lizzy doesn’t want to be anybody’s mistress or someone who has to hide in shame. She’s already had that one terrible experience with James, so she certainly doesn’t deserve to play second fiddle or be hidden away.
But Nan immediately reaches out to her mother, because she has no one else to talk to about what’s happening. While Nan trusts her friends, the Lizzy situation is a betrayal of sorts, so she seeks the one person who will truly understand her. Turns out, Nan is pregnant, and she knows that it’s Theo’s baby based on the timeline. While this explains her confusion about what to do and why she would force Lizzy into a corner because she herself needs protection, I feel like if she had met with all the girls and discussed this, they might’ve come up with an actual solution. All England has really done is split them up, and I hate it!
Nan’s predicament offers her only one solution: to protect herself and the baby, even if it means no happy ending for Lizzy, but before she can do anything to secure that protection, Theo leaves her hanging, not knowing the truth and renouncing his title. This leaves both Lizzy and Nan puzzled, because Lizzy’s already agreed to marry Hector a second time, and Nan is now entirely alone in this world. Or at least, there’s no man to “protect” her. But Patti has made her one promise: she will not let anybody take her baby away. This is why Nan didn’t freak out about Guy and Paloma’s marriage, because she can’t be the person Guy needs her to be; she’s going to be the mother of someone else’s child. Plus, she already made him play that part with the whole Jinny situation; this man would just be getting thrown around like a makeshift dad at this point. Jokes aside, though, Guy and Paloma can be happy together, and Nan’s situation is just too complicated for her to consider romantic love at all. All she cares about at the moment is her baby, and this baby is also her ticket to freedom.
In season 2’s ending, Nan tells Lizzy not to tell Theo about her pregnancy and gives her her blessing to lie to Theo. I suppose this is a small victory for Nan in terms of revenge, but I thought it was quite unfair, not only to make her lie, but also because this means that when her baby grows up, and if Theo gets his title back, it will be the rightful heir. While Nan doesn’t want this right now, and especially with the Dowager in charge, she might want it for her kid in the future. Sure, she runs off smiling, as if there’s nothing holding her back, but this isn’t what Nan wants, really, is it? She got a taste of power, and she’s going to want it again. She won’t just leave “her voice” behind; it just doesn’t make sense.
Who Is The New Duke Of Tintagel?
I don’t know about you, but the number of cheaters on this show has to be studied, because why is everyone so unfaithful?! Nan, Theo, Guy, Lizzy, and Tracy, and then the fact that the Duchess had an ex-lover, but more importantly, her husband was a cheater too, but Theo never knew. Uff, this is just too much. So it turns out that the Dowager Duchess has invited Kit, Theo’s half-brother, who has nothing to do with her, to be the new Duke of Tintagel. The only thing here is, why is she so eager to keep it in the family when it’s not her family! But I suppose when she said that Tintagel is a part of her, this is what she meant. No more lovey-dovey time for the old couple, eh?
What Can We Expect From Season 3?
If we get a new season for The Buccaneers, the thing that I will be most interested to see is how Hector handles Lizzy leaving him, not once, but twice. His dad did mention that shame is the thing that hurts more than a woman leaving you for another man. There’s something villainous about Hector that I can’t quite put my finger on. It did seem like he was too kind, but then he blew it when he was “disrespected” by Lizzy. I just hope he won’t make things much worse for women like Jinny and Nan, and continue to do the good work Nan started with him.
Nan will return with her kid to raise them as the heir of Tintagel. She likes the idea of freedom, but she’s too much of a strong woman to let go of power. Additionally, is Nan really going to be able to get over two heartbreaks with a baby? At age 19? I really don’t think so. I really liked how she said the love story was supposed to be the girls’, but I feel like she’s forgotten that for now, and eventually, they will all reunite.
Lizzy and Theo will not be happy with each other. I think Theo was wonderfully genuine with Lizzy at the end of this episode, and I suppose I can believe in their love story now, but with everything that’s happened, and with Lizzy being forced to lie to Theo about Nan or hide the truth, however you want to see it, things will eventually sour, and I hate that for Lizzy. I do hope she tells him the truth sooner rather than later, and they figure out a good plan with Nan and her baby in mind.
Mabel and Conchita’s business will thrive. I love that Mabel is so considerate and has a genius business idea as well. Ever since Richard’s death, nobody trusts Conchita’s work anymore. I mean, she was the one who came up with the whole thing, but her credibility is kind of lost, and she’s got to look after Jinny and Freddie too. I think whatever happens, this is going to work for her, and Mabel can be happy, trying to get over Honoria. As for Guy, I would hope he gets to be happy with Paloma, but that would also mean no real role for him in the show moving forward? I’m not sure about the timelines of the show now, but what if the kid is actually Guy’s and not Theo’s? That would be a whole different story, no?
There’s a chance Kit’s going to be an even bigger heartthrob than Theo and Guy. Given that there’s going to be a new male character in a show like this one, he’s got to be the most attractive person in the room. There’s no telling which of the girls will fall into his web yet. But if it’s Nan, we’ve kind of got a Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII situation going on, where he married her after his elder brother died. We know how that story ends, though, so maybe it’s best that doesn’t happen. But also, Theo isn’t dead, and there’s much more happening here, so maybe Kit will never become Duke.
