‘The Devil’s Hour’ Season 2 Ending Explained: Can The Bomber Be Adult Isaac?

Published

Amazon Prime’s convoluted but thrilling mystery drama series The Devil’s Hour has returned with its 2nd season, leaving us with even more questions about the fate of the central characters than earlier. The Devil’s Hour season 2 is largely centered around a terrorist attack in which an unidentified bomber leaves an explosive in a children’s toy store named Rigby’s Toys. Although the death of seventeen victims in the attack can be ultimately avoided by the end, it also branches off the main sequence of events and sets up an even more convoluted future for the characters. This article will briefly discuss the possible plot points that we might see in season 3, which has already been confirmed by Amazon Prime Video, with respect to the manner in which season 2 ends.

Spoiler Alert

Will Lucy remember her past lives?

During the ending of The Devil’s Hour season 2, the protagonist, Lucy Chambers, seems to be killed by Gideon Shepherd, although we do not actually see the act but only hear the gunshot. It is very possible that Lucy might still be alive, meaning that it was either Gideon or one of the police officers who had been shot, but as of now, we have to consider Lucy to be dead, since that is what the episode seems to suggest. In that case, the question of whether Lucy will remember this life in her next recurrence or rebirth will become more important. When she has a near-death experience after running into the burning house, Lucy finally gets in sync with her other versions from the alternate realities, and she refers to this as her awakening. Based on conversations she had with Gideon in an alternate reality in the future, it is the man’s influence in her current life that actually awakens her.

It can be assumed that once this awareness about her alternate versions has awakened in her, Lucy will be able to remember the incidents from her past lives as well. After all, she uses the knowledge gained by DI Lucy in an alternate reality about the bombing of the toy store, which will take place a few months later in her reality, to try and prevent the terrorist attack. Therefore, it is very possible that she will indeed remember about all her recurrences in the many lives that she will live, although she does not want to take such a huge risk. Towards the end of the season, when police forces corner Gideon and Lucy, the man proposes that they kill themselves and wait for their next life, where they will remember every detail of their present life, and the series of events will also be the same. In that way, Gideon and Lucy would be able to find out more about the bomber without disturbing the chain of events too much and ultimately take down the perpetrator. However, Lucy is just not willing to take this risk, mostly because she has two loved ones depending on her survival in this life—her mother Sylvia and her son Isaac. She knows that they will be lost in life without her presence, and so she tries to prevent her death, although whether she is successful at it is a different question. When Lucy had her awakening, she did seem to witness the branching off of her life, meaning that she saw both Sylvia dying and herself becoming a police detective, as well as the development in her current life, in which she had her mother, a young son, and became a Child Protective Services officer. Going by this logic, she will indeed remember the incidents of the current life in her next birth, although the exact events will surely have other more concerning effects on the characters.

Can The Bomber Be Adult Isaac?

The Devil’s Hour season 2 also shows a future reality in which an adult Isaac Chambers visits Gideon in prison, looking for certain very specific answers. Although Gideon is very confused about how or why Isaac is visiting him, since he had not predicted such a meeting to take place, the young man is very determined to get answers to his questions. Isaac even seems a bit vengeful when he states that the biggest question that has been troubling him throughout his life is with regards to why Gideon had killed his mother. This suggests that Gideon’s decision to kill Lucy and himself at the end to avoid getting caught by the police had also resulted in Isaac growing up to question his mother’s untimely death, and he might have even grown angry at the individual who had caused this death.

While the existence of adult Isaac is one of the most crucial matters left unexplained in The Devil’s Hour season 2, another such significant mystery is the identity of the bomber. Although Lucy goes through extreme measures to try and find out about the young man who is about to blow up the toy store, she ultimately has to leave the place after a misunderstanding with a customer. Gideon then decides to pursue the perpetrator, even though he would immediately be recognized by the people because he is wanted by the police, but then quickly changes his mind when DI Ravi Dhillon runs into the toy store. Even by the end, the identity of the bomber is not revealed, and the young man manages to flee the scene after leaving his backpack at the place, with the ticking time bomb inside.

While the theory that adult Isaac might somehow be the bomber is probably a very far-fetched thought, it might actually come true when The Devil’s Hour season 3 is released. Isaac is more talented than even the rest of the supernaturally skilled set of characters, since he can literally switch between realities at any given instance. It is also highly suggested that he will possess the ability to remember his past lives as well, meaning that he will probably know exactly what killed his mother. If Isaac does not get a satisfying answer from Gideon in the future reality about why Lucy had to die, he might just turn completely aggressive against the man.

Using his ability to switch realities, which he will obviously master as he grows up, Isaac might then plan the bombing only to kill Gideon. There is one instance when Gideon is about to enter the toy store, and the only thing that stops him from doing so is Ravi, who gets convinced by Lucy’s claims at just the right moment. Although young Isaac obviously noticed the romantic relationship developing between his mother and Ravi, he did not perhaps imagine that the detective might sacrifice himself for her wish to protect the victims. After all, Isaac had never witnessed the eternal love that existed between Ravi and Lucy over many realities, since he was never a part of these realities. The manner in which The Devil’s Hour season 2 keeps the identity of the bomber a secret, almost forcefully holding the matter back for the next season, makes it possible that the perpetrator might actually be adult Isaac. The fact that some of the scenes showing the bomber in action are presented in a choppy visual style, perhaps suggesting that the character is having a tough time keeping realities distinct and separate from one another, also points to the same possibility.

Is Dr. Bennett hiding a secret?

The psychologist seen treating Isaac’s case, Dr. Bennett, initially does not see anything supernaturally unusual in the boy, quite obviously, since she does not believe in the existence of alternate realities and recurrent lives. But as she spends more time with him, and especially after he disappears from and then reappears in her chamber as if by magic, her opinions regarding the matter begin to change. Incidentally, she had let Isaac play with the Dictaphone during this time, meaning that sounds from the alternate reality are recorded on it when the boy switches to the plane. Through the recording, Dr. Bennett hears her own voice calling out to a young girl named Amelia, who is apparently hiding herself behind the curtains because she hates how she looks. Eerily enough, in an earlier scene taking place in Dr. Bennett’s chamber, a ghostly figure of a girl is indeed seen peeking out from behind the curtains, although neither the psychologist nor Lucy are able to see it.

Only Isaac had been able to see the girl, and when he switched over to the alternate reality inside the chamber, he could hear an interaction between the doctor and the girl. However, the nature of the conversation, recorded on the Dictaphone, very clearly suggests that Dr. Bennett was doing something unlawful, and perhaps even cruel, to the young girl. This further suggests that the psychologist has some dark secrets of her own and might actually be hiding a secret that will be revealed in The Devil’s Hour season 3. As of now, though, she accepts the supernatural powers of Isaac and lends her support to Lucy by ensuring that the boy will be kept safe. It is Dr. Bennett who then oversees the Warren family adopting Isaac, and whether we are shown more of the boy’s upbringing will be interesting to watch. Overall, The Devil’s Hour does not seem too interested in answering all the questions that it picks our brains with, and season 3 might not be very different in this regard either. Leave us a comment on what you thought about season 2 and what more you would like to see in season 3 when it finally releases in the future.
