‘The Devil’s Hour’ Season 2 Recap (Episodes 1-5): Is Lucy Dead Or Alive?

Published

Amazon Prime’s thriller drama series The Devil’s Hour, which gained quite some popularity when it first released in 2022, has now returned with a second season. As the first season had ended on a cliffhanger, with one of the central characters, Isaac, seemingly killed or fatally injured in a house fire, we were finally given answers to what happened to him and the others. The supernatural concept on which the series is established, which states that our lives follow the fictional law of recurrence, still exists and plays an even more important role this time around. Overall, The Devil’s Hour season 2 is a well-made continuation, which leaves us with even more questions in the end than it answers.

Spoiler Alert

What is Season 2 about?

The Devil’s Hour season 1 had originally introduced us to the protagonist, Lucy Chambers, who worked as a Child Protective Services officer and tried to solve some professional and personal mysteries, all of which led her to a man named Gideon Shepherd. Found to have been linked with a number of kidnappings and murders, Gideon revealed to the police that he had an exceptional power, which helped him remember information about all his past lives. According to the man’s claims, all human life follows a law of recurrence, meaning that we are born into the same roles and identities after our death, and all events and incidents in our lives play out in the very same way until we actively do something to change the pattern and break the loop. Normal humans have no idea about this recurrence, though, as they forget everything of their past lives, and the slightest hint about any past life or alternate reality that they get is through the feeling of déjà vu.

Gideon Shepherd, however, is able to remember everything from his past lives and all the alternate lives he has lived, and he has carved out his path towards meeting Lucy in this present life by using those memories. Acting as a self-appointed vigilante who stops criminals before they even think of committing crimes, Gideon would always be arrested by the same police officer, Detective Inspector Lucy Chambers, and in order to stop this from happening, he had changed Lucy’s life story completely by ensuring that her mother’s attempted suicide failed so that she would not grow up to become a police officer. When she and Gideon sat face-to-face at the end of The Devil’s Hour season 1, Lucy seemed to have been convinced by the man’s claims of the afterlife, but more pressing matters got in her way when her young son Isaac got stuck inside their house, which caught fire.

In the alternate reality, where Gideon had not meddled with Lucy’s life, the latter had grown up to be a police detective, and there were some flashes of this reality in season 1. The Devil’s Hour season 2 begins in this alternate timeline, where DI Lucy Chambers and DI Ravi Dhillon come across Gideon Shepherd after he is found to be the lead suspect in a series of crimes. Gideon makes a prophecy about a horrific explosion at a children’s toy store in London just a few months later, and although Lucy is initially concerned about the claims, she is convinced by the others to not take the man seriously. But DI Lucy Chambers does not yet know that the explosion will indeed take place, and it will have a serious impact on her life across realities.

Is Isaac alive?

At the end of The Devil’s Hour season 1, young Isaac had been intentionally abandoned by his emotionally absent and cruel father Mike when their house caught fire. The fire itself was indirectly because of Mike’s actions as well, as he had spilled soda on the boy’s shirt and Isaac had innocently put the shirt on the radiator, leading to a devastating fire. Although Lucy had run into the house to save her son, there was no sign of the boy inside, and it seemed like Isaac might have died in the incident. However, The Devil’s Hour season 2 confirms that Isaac actually survived because of his own supernatural ability to switch between two realities. Although he is not exactly in full control of this ability, it seems to kick in whenever the boy is too tense and scared. Thus, when caught inside the burning house, Isaac shut his eyes and was transported to another reality, in which there was technically no existence of him. In this alternate reality, the one in which season 2 begins, Lucy never got together with Mike, and Isaac was never born. Another major difference here is that the house where Lucy and Isaac used to live in the original reality, the one that caught fire, was actually home to their neighbors, the Warren family.

As we follow the events in the alternate reality, Lucy and Ravi are called to the Warren house to investigate an earlier incident, when Isaac suddenly teleports into one of the bedrooms. Neither the detectives nor the Warrens knew Isaac, since he was an anomaly in this reality, and they were left equally confused when he disappeared once again. Later, the detectives have to visit the house once again, when it accidentally catches fire and injures some of the Warren family members. The reason for this fire is linked to the supernatural, for it was caused because of Isaac’s switch to this alternate reality. When he switched to this world and into Warren’s house, he was seemingly on fire, and although he was saved, the fire spread to the house in this reality and destroyed it. The boy, however, survives by hiding inside a playhouse in the neighborhood and is finally rescued by Lucy and Ravi. But Isaac keeps switching realities, almost uncontrollably, and this strange occurrence, in turn, leads DI Ravi Dhillon to the house of Harold Slade, the pedophile whom Gideon had killed in the original timeline.

Isaac eventually returns to his original timeline and to his mother, Lucy, but he is still unable to stick to this reality at all times. It is gradually revealed that the boy often experiences shifts in realities and struggles to comprehend the whole situation since he often hears and sees things from the other realities that take place in the same geographical spot. He sees an aggressive dog near his school, although there is no such animal in the present reality. Isaac then also momentarily shifts to the other reality, gets bitten by the dog, and then comes back with the wounds evident on his body. As his powers get stronger, he is able to switch to different realities almost at will, like he does while sitting inside Dr. Bennett’s office. This incident ultimately convinces the psychologist about the existence of alternate realities and past lives, which comes in handy at the very end of the season.

How does Lucy get to know about the future?

While Lucy Chambers pretty much spent most of the previous season confused about what was happening to her and her son, she is a much more confident and changed person in The Devil’s Hour season 2, and this is directly linked to her changed opinions about Gideon Shepherd. As Gideon told her, he had been visited by an alternate self of Lucy in a future reality as well, in which she was suffering from cancer. This is actually the alternate reality in which Lucy was a police detective and was married to DI Ravi Dhillon, with whom she spent the rest of her life. But towards the end of her life, for she knew that the cancer was about to kill her soon, Lucy regretted not doing anything about the warning Gideon had given her about the bomb explosion and not being able to protect the lives of the victims in the process. She was also distressed about how her life had turned out so painful, both physically and emotionally, because of the cancer and her mother’s death, respectively. It was then that she made a deal with Gideon, believing his claim of being able to remember all his past lives, asking him to meddle in her life and prevent her mother, Sylvia, from dying.

This is what led to Gideon creating the alternate reality by changing the fate of Sylvia Chambers, and it all came down to Lucy running into her burning house to save her son (who also existed only in this reality) and losing consciousness. At this very moment, while she seems to have a near-death experience, Lucy’s consciousness gets united with all her selves over all the realities, and she goes through a phenomenon that is termed ‘awakening’ in The Devil’s Hour. Lucy’s awakening basically means that she is suddenly able to remember details about the different lives she had lived, and especially about the alternate reality in which she exists as a police detective. Thus, Lucy was suddenly able to access the thoughts and memories of DI Lucy, which meant that she got to know about the bomb explosion at Rigby’s Toys, which is supposed to take place in the future in her reality.

Once Lucy has the experience of remembering everything about her past and alternate versions, she has no reason to doubt Gideon anymore, and so she helps the man stay hidden from the law. While we had earlier seen Gideon escaping from the prison, where he had gone off to had been kept a mystery. Now we see the man sheltered at Lucy’s childhood home, which is located in a desolate spot in the countryside. This is where Gideon and Lucy start to plan their intervention in the bomb attack, extremely determined to not just stop the attack but, more importantly, find out who the perpetrator is.

Who is Evelyn Wiseman?

When Gideon and Lucy start to work together after the latter recovers from the injuries sustained when she had run into the burning house, he tells her about a certain Evelyn Wiseman, whose name Lucy writes down in her personal diary. As DI Ravi Dhillon gets close to her and he and Lucy start to date as well, he continues to be a bit suspicious about her intentions and secretly keeps investigating her with his new professional partner, Sam Boyd. As he finds Lucy’s diary and sees the name of Evelyn Wiseman, both Ravi and Sam start to look for clues about the girl, who had gone missing many years ago. In this reality, Evelyn Wiseman was considered to be either a liar or a patient of schizophrenia, for she made claims of remembering her past lives from a very young age. However, Evelyn had actually been helped by Gideon in this past life of hers, meaning that his influence had awakened her consciousness too and she really did remember her past life.

In order to avoid any more complications in life, Evelyn had left her home and family and had moved into a desolate farmhouse. Although Gideon knew about where she was staying, he had never told anyone about it except for Lucy in this timeline, and this in turn led to the police finding out about her. Evelyn suffers from a similar condition as young Isaac, for she is often able to hear and see people and objects from different realities around her and grows confused because of it. Evelyn is not intricately linked to the main plot, except for the fact that if the police find her, then they will get to know about Gideon and arrest him, which would prevent the bomber from getting caught.

Who is the real perpetrator behind the bombing at Rigby’s Toys?

The terrible bomb blast at Rigby’s Toys, which kills seventeen people, eleven of whom are children, goes on to become the main incident around which The Devil’s Hour season 2 has been crafted. Gideon is always determined to find out who the bomber is so that he can prevent the terrorist attack, at least in his next lifetime if not in the present one. Lucy, however, keeps stressing on the need to prevent the attack in this very lifetime because she wants to protect all the victims. Therefore, they must find out about the perpetrator and stop him right before the bomb explodes at the toy store. The notion of the butterfly effect has a lot of influence in the world of The Devil’s Hour, which is why the protagonists know that they cannot simply prevent the perpetrator from committing the crime from way beforehand. Doing so would lead the bomber to commit some other acts of terrorism, preventing which would become even more difficult.

Lucy tracks down the car that would be used by the bomber in the future and believes that a man named Steve Dunn, who steals it, would be the perpetrator. However, she realizes that Dunn has actually arranged for the vehicle to be sold off to a different man, but she has to kill Dunn to protect herself. Eventually, when the day of the bombing arrives, Lucy is able to convince her boyfriend, Ravi, that she knows about the attack that will take place in the near future. Although Lucy is the one who goes to the Rigby’s Toy store to identify the perpetrator and also prevent the attack, she makes a mistake and is almost forced off the property by the guards. Ultimately, neither Gideon nor Ravi are able to see the face of the bomber, and all we know about his identity is that he wears a yellow jacket. Although the identity of the perpetrator is not revealed, Ravi does manage to get the store emptied before the explosion, although he gets killed in the process.

Does Lucy die in the end?

At the end of season 2, Lucy Chambers has to rush to protect her son and mother from the police since Sam Boyd manages to escape from the farmhouse. The police officer then arrives at Lucy’s cottage in the woods and is just about to arrest her when Isaac does something fascinating when he hugs his mother. While the boy had been switching between realities alone so far, he now takes Lucy to the woods in the alternate reality, where their house does not exist since Isaac does not technically exist. The mother and son are able to escape the police when they move some distance into the forest and then travel back to their original reality, while Sylvia tries to explain to the astonished Sam what just happened.

Some time later, Gideon joins Lucy, and they still intend to stop the bomber from committing any more acts of terrorism. But in order to do so, they must escape the police first, and while attempting to run through the nearby barns, the police force finally caught up with them. Gideon now makes a strange choice, as he holds Lucy hostage, continuously claiming that she will still remember her past in the next recurrence of their lives, and they can take down the perpetrator then. Although Lucy does not agree with the plan, there seems to be no way out for her, and at the very end of The Devil’s Hour season 2, she seems to be shot dead by either Gideon or the police. Young Isaac is adopted by his neighbors, the Warrens, who decide to raise him as part of their family.

This incident will go on to have a great impact on Isaac’s life, for he is also seen in the future timeline meeting with Gideon in the prison and asking him why he had killed Lucy. In a very convoluted manner, this might suggest that Isaac will grow up to become the terrorist who would commit crimes in different realities and timelines. But what exactly the ending suggests and who the bomber actually was can only be solved when The Devil’s Hour returns with season 3 sometime in the future.
