‘The Family McMullen’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Do Tommy And Karen Fall In Love?

Published

The Family McMullen is a new comedy-drama film with a great focus on romantic relationships and the need to be open to second chances, although the idea of family and togetherness binds everything at its core. The film follows the members of the McMullen family, who all find themselves in some crisis or another and have to stand by one another to help themselves find a new purpose in life, whether willingly or otherwise. A direct sequel to the 1995 film The Brothers McMullen, this year’s The Family McMullen makes for quite a nice and breezy watch, despite leading to the expected resolutions that are common in romantic comedy dramas.

What is the film about?

The Family McMullen begins on Thanksgiving, when all the members of the McMullen family gather for a dinner together at the house of Barry McMullen, somewhere in Brooklyn. Barry is the eldest McMullen, at least in the United States, as the family might still have some members living in their native Ireland, and it is tradition for him and his brother, Patrick, to meet every year on Thanksgiving. In recent years, Molly has also become an integral part of this tradition, as she is the widow of their third brother, Jack. Although Jack had passed from cancer a few years ago, Molly still attends Thanksgiving dinner, for she is still very much a part of the family. Barry’s two children, Tommy and Patty, are also members of the dinner party, and it is with regard to the daughter that Barry has some objections.

Patty has only recently informed her father that she is about to bring her devout Christian boyfriend, Terrence Joseph, to Thanksgiving. Even her aunt, Molly, whom she and Tommy consider to be a friendly mother figure, is a bit taken aback by this suddenness. The whole family is in for a shock when Patty reveals at the dinner that she and Terrence Joseph are now engaged and are due to marry very soon. Patrick is the only one to really congratulate them, for Barry and Molly feel that the decision has been taken a bit too hastily, but the conversation only reveals something sad about the youngest McMullen brother. Patrick has recently been dumped by his wife, Leslie, as their long marriage has made her fall out of love with him, and since their sons are now independent adults, she has taken the decision to give her life a fresh start.

As a result, Patrick has nowhere to stay, as Leslie wants him to leave her house, and so he requests Barry to let him move in with him for at least the next few weeks. Despite not really feeling keen about it, Barry agrees, but this is only just the beginning of him welcoming back family members. Soon, Tommy explains how he has left his high-paying IT job to move back to Brooklyn and follow his passion as an actor, for which he too moves back into his father’s house. Next, an intense discussion at Thanksgiving dinner makes Terrence Joseph feel that both he and Patty should really try things out with multiple partners before deciding whether they actually want to marry, and Patty naturally moves back into her father’s house too, confused about what is going to happen to her romantic relationship.

Do Tommy And Karen Unintentionally Fall In Love?

As Tommy moves back to Brooklyn, he categorically wants to focus on a career in acting and wants to stay away from any genuine romantic relationship. This is also because of the fact that he has never experienced serious love or even a special connection with anyone, which usually makes people feel butterflies in their stomach or swoon over someone. On his very first night out after moving back in with his father, Tommy meets a young woman named Karen, whom he approaches as per usual, and after some persuasion, she does agree to go out on a lunch date with him. Interestingly, Karen holds similar beliefs about love and relationships, as in, she does not feel them to be important matters in one’s life, and therefore does not want to get into any romantic relationships, choosing to focus on her professional career instead.

But things pan out very differently, right from their very first meeting, as Tommy and Karen end up saying and doing things that they had promised not to do—with the most integral one being them falling uncontrollably in love. Despite their best efforts to avoid such a lovely and sweet fate, because of their respective inhibitions against serious romantic relationships, the couple cannot stop meeting and falling for each other. Karen’s mother, Nina, also plays an integral part, for it has been her overprotectiveness with regard to her daughter’s romantic life that has made Karen this way. Nina is the first to caution her daughter against the ills of love and romantic relationships. But despite this perspective, the young couple ultimately give in to their hearts’ desire, and Karen even proposes to Tommy, and they get engaged.

Why does Barry’s situation threaten his son’s romantic relationship?

Barry firmly stands against anything religious and romantic, and he too has tried to teach Tommy about the banality of love and marriage, based on his own failed romantic relationships. But he is also a romantic at heart, which is why he is stuck in a strange mess after learning that the mother of his son’s girlfriend is Nina, the woman with whom he had always had a special connection. Although just friends to the world, Barry and Nina have hooked up with each other numerous times over the course of their lives, and although they did always have romantic chemistry, they never acted on it. Clearly, both their inhibitions and sometimes even hatred against love have played a very strong part in this rejection of a possible relationship.

Despite Tommy warning his father against complicating his relationship with Karen, Barry goes to Nina’s house to explain his situation and just talk about things, only to end up spending the whole evening making love to her. The bottle of wine he had taken along with him, which had been gifted to him by Patrick earlier, makes it evident to Tommy that his father has been unable to control his urges even before Nina comes clean to Karen about it. Ultimately, Barry realizes that his acts will only end up hurting his son, since Tommy is now engaged to Karen, and so he and Nina finally decide to end their arrangement, especially since they will already have a hard time keeping their hands off each other after their children’s marriage.

Can Molly get over the grief of her previous marriage?

Molly’s situation is quite tricky because of the fact that her previous marriage, with Jack McMullen, had not really ended in the most healthy manner. Jack was diagnosed with cancer, and his relationship with his wife continued till he passed away a few years back, but Molly has still not been able to process a horrible incident that had shaken the foundations of her marriage. During one phase of their marriage, Jack had been cheating on Molly extensively, and she had eventually found out about it. The grief of being cheated on and then her efforts to understand why exactly her beloved husband had had an extramarital affair still keep her away from matters of love as much as possible. She still feels that individuals must take time and figure their lives and desires out before taking as drastic a measure as marriage, which is why she advises Patty and Terrence Joseph to take things slow. But Molly soon runs into an old friend named Walter, who had also lost his wife to cancer, and they start hanging out. In fact, Walter and Molly were once very interested in each other and had wished to have a relationship, but neither of them could openly confess their feelings in time. Molly had then met Jack and settled down with him. Finally, now that both of them are struck with loneliness, Molly and Walter start dating, just to figure out what could have been had they once expressed themselves.

Does Patrick manage to pull his life back together?

For the most part of The Family McMullen, Patrick’s main struggle is to cope with his marriage being a failure, despite him being as religious and loyal as can be. But with time, Patrick realizes how the marriage had not been working out for quite some time, and that he and Leslie had only been trying to make things work in vain. He also realizes that his brother’s constant nagging about him staying at his house also has some valid reasons, for it is important for Patrick to get back up on his feet again and pull his life back together. This is why he ultimately decides to buy their family home, where Jack and Molly once used to live, and moves into the place when Molly reveals that she wants to sell it. He also reunites with an old lover, Susan, who had broken up with him many years ago and whom he eventually grew to dislike because of familial differences. Patrick and Susan become very good friends once again, with the possibility of a romantic relationship always on the cards.

What Keeps Bothering Patty About Her Relationship?

Patty is like her uncle when it comes to religious and romantic matters, for she almost takes pride in the fact that she has only been with one man and is now about to marry him as well. But when Molly’s words bring about a change in Terrence Joseph, or TJ, as most of the McMullens like to call him, Patty is left confused and undecided because of the fact that her fiancé actually agrees to the plan and is even ready to take a break from their relationship, just so that he can sleep around with other women. Although Patty initially stays dedicated to her relationship and does not want to experiment with other lovers, she is left heartbroken upon knowing that TJ has been seeing other women.

She is even more confused when her teenage crush, Sam Dukakis, walks into her life, arguably with a little intentional help from her father. Sam and Patty had once tried to kiss as teenagers, but she had thrown up as she was drunk on beer, and this incident is still a matter of great shame for Patty. She initially agrees to go out on a date with Sam, only as if to undo her mistake from the past, but grows disillusioned about it once she starts thinking about how she is eventually going to marry TJ. Patty has to be guided once again by Molly, who tells her about the importance of a physical connection, which is clearly lacking in her relationship with TJ. The young woman grows even more confused after she absolutely loves the time spent with Sam and is caught in two minds about what to do next in her romantic life.

Does everything work out for the McMullens in the end?

Despite all their respective difficulties, the McMullens ultimately manage to reach significant resolutions to their worries and also help each other along the way. It all begins with Tommy and Karen having an upfront discussion about their situation, for although they are deeply and passionately in love with each other, getting engaged is indeed too big a step, and an unnecessary commitment at this stage of their relationship. Furthermore, the situation between their respective parents is too odd as well, for it might lead to more complications if they get married right away. Therefore, the youngsters cancel their engagement, with Karen even asking to have the ring she had given back. They remain lovers, though, and are seen together during Thanksgiving the next year, as this is just them giving themselves some time before deciding on their future together.

Patty is absolutely ecstatic when Terrence Joseph comes back into her life and attempts to propose to her right away, right on the porch of her father’s house. But unlike before, Patty now stops TJ and asks for some more time and clarity so that she can figure out what her heart and mind really want. This is also when she reveals to TJ that she has slept with someone else and is now genuinely confused about which man to choose, to which TJ acts shocked and stunned, as if Patty was never meant to do this. It becomes all the more evident that Terrence Joseph had only created a shameless chance for himself to get intimate with multiple women before getting married to Patty, but he would not entertain Patty behaving in a similar manner to figure out things for herself. This also makes Patty’s decision easier, as she runs to Sam’s apartment and confesses her feelings for him. A year later, Patty and Sam are still together, dating and also wanting to get married soon.

After realizing how important the romantic relationship was to their respective children, Barry and Nina had decided to no longer hook up or even be in touch, as they ultimately chose the well-being of their children over their physical and emotional desires. But since Tommy and Karen indefinitely postponed their engagement, and there was technically no good reason to stop them, Barry and Nina start dating, this time becoming a couple for real, and at the Thanksgiving dinner the following year, they are seen together, even sharing a kiss at the table. Molly had managed to find a genuine connection in her romantic interest from her college days, Walter, and they are now a couple. Despite technically having no reason to be a part of the family, for she is the widow of the McMullens’ deceased brother, Molly not only continues to be a part of the unit, but also now brings Walter into the family, and everyone dearly welcomes the man. It is not clear whether Patrick also finds love, but it is certain that he has found company in Susan, as they attend the dinner together, but there is no clear sign of romance between them.
