‘The Last Anniversary’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Did Enigma Find Her Family?

Published

There’s something very predictable about The Last Anniversary, yet it still keeps you watching because of its ensemble cast and the way the story plays out. Rather than the mystery, I think the main point is to focus on individual women and what each of their dilemmas is. Also, I think I’ve figured out what Rose is hiding, but I’ll get into that a bit later. This episode shows Enigma standing up for herself and her family to show everybody that she genuinely cares. On the other hand, Grace is planning something big that nobody has any idea about, and though Callum notices that she’s not having the best time being a mom, he isn’t able to figure out how to help her. I suppose this means that whatever happens in the next episode is going to be huge, at least for Grace. Also, Rose seems to be retreating deeper into her shell, but I think we know why, so let’s try to explore episode 4.

Spoiler Alert

What Does Veronica Learn About Enigma’s Family?

The Last Anniversary episode 4 begins with Finch talking to Rose after having fired Alice. Finch asks Rose if Alice has told her anything about him. While Alice has told Rose everything, she doesn’t say anything to Finch. Finch tells Rose that he wants her to be one of his special girls, because he looks after them very well. Rose politely declines the offer, which makes him a little bit upset. In the present day, old Rose is being haunted by Connie. I suppose Rose feels guilty over hiding something very important, and so her guilt is manifesting in the form of a Connie ghost, urging her to tell the family whatever this big secret is. On the other hand, Veronika simply finds a YouTube video about the Finch murder, which features his remaining family, a son named Robin. In this video, Robin talks about his dad being brutally murdered, and I have reason to believe it was probably Rose and Alice who did it together. I mean, this is the best explanation, isn’t it?

This gives her the idea to expose Robin and his mom with a mic in his face, but first, she wants Enigma to get to know them. Basically, she wants to have a big showdown for her podcast. Somehow, Veronika is able to match Enigma and Robin’s DNA, which proves that they’re half-siblings. When she tells Enigma about it, Rose seems to be quite uncomfortable. But Enigma tells her that she’s inviting them over for dinner. At lunch, the family is trying to plan the party they host every year in honor of Enigma’s story. This time, they’ve undersold tickets, so some people think it’s a better idea to cancel. But Rose says maybe it’s time to make it the last year, since Connie is dead. Also, because Callum looks tired, Enigma tells him to give the baby to Grace, but Rose suggests Sophie take it because she looks like she’d like to hold him. Sophie’s happy to hold the baby, and Grace has another one of her visions where she imagines Sophie feeding her baby as if she were his mother.

Also, Grace is struggling with sleep because the baby keeps waking up at night, and she’s just not been able to sleep at all. She keeps dreaming about floating away into the ocean while Sophie, Callum, and her baby stay back as a happy family. On the other hand, Sophie’s having the best time sleeping around with Zeke, and everybody can hear it. It is when she tries to talk to Rose about the whole Enigma situation that Rose snaps at her, telling her it’s not her family. So, this has me thinking Sophie might be Rose’s daughter. They look a bit alike too, don’t they? Though I suppose she’s a bit young, so I’m not entirely sure how this could’ve happened. Another secret I think Rose might be keeping is that Alice is still alive and safe. Maybe that’s why Connie keeps urging her to tell the truth? So Enigma can find her mother? At night, Rose fights ghosts with a pillow before Enigma finds her basically losing her mind.

What Is Grace Planning?

On the other hand, Grace needs to head out, so Sophie agrees to take the baby off her hands for a bit. Grace puts a t-shirt in the crib, I’m not entirely sure why, and hides it with the sheet. Sophie invites her to dinner with Zeke, which also includes Veronika and the detective Audrey. Grace declines, but she also says that Zeke isn’t really “boyfriend” material, which is also what Veronika told her a little earlier, so Sophie becomes a little bit touchy about it. Anyway, she manages to cook up a feast thanks to Connie’s cookbook, all with the baby on her, and puts him to sleep too. Meanwhile, Margie has some alone time with her teacher again.

Zeke arrives very late to dinner and with half a bottle of wine because he’s drunk the rest. Meanwhile, Veronika and Audrey seem to be getting to know each other well, almost as if they’re interested romantically. Grace takes her baby and leaves just as Zeke arrives. She’s reminded of how Sophie’s the perfect mother that she’ll never be. Zeke is an absolute prick at dinner, pointing out that Audrey easily looks like a lesbian and how straight women over a certain age and lesbians are always looking for sperm donors, making the two ladies leave. But apparently, this is something that gets Sophie going, and they have sex. After, she asks him if he took her mother’s ring, and says she won’t get mad if he did; she just needs it back. I wonder if it’s just hiding somewhere. Later, Grace gives her a call and apologizes for being mean about Zeke. Sophie then offers Grace and Callum tickets for an event she was meant to go to with Zeke, but Grace suggests they go together instead. Meanwhile, Rose cuts her hair at night by herself to the same length it was back in the day when she knew Alice. They say hair holds memories; maybe she’s trying to get rid of them. Or wait, were Alice and Rose a couple?! I really don’t know.

When it comes time to go to the party, it’s Callum who shows up instead of Grace. Sophie and Callum do have fun together, and there’s some mild flirting as well, but this is all a part of Grace’s plans. She may not have known they were together many years ago, back in Thailand, but she can tell they’re meant to be. Meanwhile, Grace attends the lunch her mom has planned with her half-brother for a bit, but then leaves in between. Grace is making Callie’s emergency meal, but why? It would seem Grace plans on running away, but she’s got Sophie to look after her boys now, so she can feel a little bit guilt-free.

The lunch starts off all fun, with Enigma super excited to meet her half-brother and Veronika pretending it’s all good. But somewhere after Grace leaves, things start to quiet down and become awkward. This is when Rose, without hesitation, tells Robin that his dad raped Alice. This is when Robin’s mom speaks up and calls Alice a gold digger. Veronika is just too stunned to do anything, but Margie tells the woman that that doesn’t quite add up because Alice never got anything from Finch.

At the end of The Last Anniversary episode 4, Enigma throws the family out by telling them that Alice was an absolutely wonderful woman. She tells them that they’re not welcome to the island because it belongs to her family. In a flashback, we see Finch on the island when Robin was a little kid. At the time, Rose had hidden Enigma, but Finch asked her where Alice was. Rose told him that she had disappeared, but Finch tells her that he can stop everything that’s happening on the island with just a snap of his hand. This is probably why Rose and Connie, or Rose and Alice, killed the guy. The episode ends with Rose and Enigma wishing Connie were around. I guess Enigma has to let go of the burden of now knowing she was a result of assault. Can’t imagine it’s any fun.
