Amazon Prime Originals presents The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – the story of upper west side housewife turned comedian, Miriam. The show has completed 3 seasons with the fourth one on the go.
The series opens with Miriam Maisel, a girl in her twenties from a wealthy family happily married to her college sweetheart, Joel, supporting him in his career and fulfilling every duty a married woman needs to. She supports him in his fantasy of becoming a stand up comedian, making briskets as a bribe to get him onstage, making notes, counting laughs. At home, she waits for him to go to sleep before doing her nightly beauty regime, just like her mother.
Until one day, her life turned upside down, when she finds her husband cheating on her with his secretary. She leaves the house with her two children to stay with her parents. Miriam is pretty and skilled. She had some experience in stand up which she gained while helping his husband – who after many shows still sucked in stand up.
Right after getting cheated on by her husband, she gets drunk, jumps onstage and starts to speak. She does it so effortlessly and spontaneously, showing that the art belongs to her. She gets Susie as her manager, who knows of her talents right from the start. She starts to perform in cocktail bars, dive bars, even Washington Square rally mesmerising the audience in no time.

Apart from performing stand-up, she also takes care of her children and family who remain unaware of her recently found interest and job. She deals with her family problems and sometimes also supports her ex-husband. She maintains a good bond with her manager Susie, who is a loud-mouthed girl but knows of Miriam’s potential. It is like seeing two girls going on a war in a man’s world and winning with grace.
The most amazing part of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are the dialogues, which are excellently delivered by Rachel Brosnahan. The other characters, Alex Bornstein as Susie, Michael Zegen as Joel, and Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle as Miriam’s parents, are both hilarious and amazing.
The show is perfect from Miriam’s attire to her dialogues, from the setting to the supporting cast. It has everything that anyone needs in a comical drama series. On top of that it also shows woman empowerment through the transformation of Miriam from a nice daughter and good wife to a successful and self-made comedian, who achieves the goal at a time like 1958.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has received high acclaim from the critic and public. It is the first streaming series to receive the best comedy Emmy.
