‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Alejandro Dead Or Alive?

Published

In episode 3 of The Night Manager Season 2, thanks to Roxana, Jonathan finally got his hands on Teddy’s shipment list, thereby bringing him, Basil, and Sally one step closer to proving that Mayra was partaking in a trade of illegal weapons with Teddy. We got to learn a little about Roxana’s backstory and why she was involved with Teddy and yet was willing to help Jonathan put a stop to everything that Teddy was doing. But in order to actually pull that off, Jonathan had to gain Teddy’s trust, and one of the only ways of doing so was by investing in his business, Aurora. Jonathan had claimed that he had around $25 million dollars of stolen money lying around in his bank, and he began the process of transferring it to Teddy’s “charity.” But things went sideways when Mayra found out about the account that Basil and Sally were using to make Jonathan look like a legit fraud, which prevented them from transferring the money. This prompted Teddy to take Jonathan for a ride in the open seas and kill him. Right as he was about to be drowned, Basil got the green light from Mayra to use that account as he saw fit. While Mayra thought that Basil was transferring $20 million to catch someone fishy in his net, he was actually saving Jonathan’s life. Jonathan and Teddy buried the hatchet, and instead of taking a beat, Jonathan decided to secretly follow Teddy into the hills to find out who this Hanson guy was. That was when he got the shock of his life, as he found the one and only Richard Roper standing a few feet away from him, alive and kicking. How was that possible? Well, let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Teddy Spends Some Quality Time With Roper

In episode 4 of The Night Manager Season 2, we are taken straight to Angela’s new residence in Pau, France, where she’s enjoying her quaint little life with her son, husband, and dog. That’s disrupted by an email from Jonathan asking her the most obvious question: why did she lie about Roper being dead? He’s not asking her how Roper is alive. Is it some divine miracle? Is that Roper’s evil twin brother? Was some kind of a drug administered to Roper that caused his pulse rate to drop down to zero, thereby convincing Angela that he was dead? No, he doesn’t ask any of those questions. He knows that Angela has lied to him, and now he wants to know why the only person who wants Roper dead more than he does allowed that monster to walk away in Syria. While waiting for Angela’s answer, Jonathan and Martin can be seen staking out Roper’s new crib, and it seems like Roper can almost sense that his arch-nemesis is somewhere out there. Maybe that’s why he sleeps with the lights on, and when Teddy tries to shut them off so that his dad can sleep peacefully, he reprimands Teddy for doing so. In addition to worrying about his father, Teddy is bothered by Alejandro’s very existence. He has stationed Beni right outside his house, and he informs Teddy that Alejandro has been working from home because he knows that Teddy can go to any length to kill the guy who has halted his shipment and frozen his accounts. Teddy tells Beni that he has gotten the green light to murder Alejandro and replace him with someone who’s more spineless. So, all Beni has to do is limit Alejandro to his house until Teddy arrives there to put an end to the prosecutor himself.

After hanging up on Beni, Teddy and Roper have breakfast together, and then they go horseback riding through the forest so that they can peacefully talk about their future plans. Teddy informs Roper that his “Hong Kong investor” has solved his cash flow problem, and he intends to send Jonathan to Paris because he has claimed that’s where his wife and child reside. He confirms that Jonathan knows nothing about his operations and that Alejandro is about to die by nightfall. Once the shipment is delivered to the politician, Jose Cabrera, Roper will get the money that he needs to pay off Omar and Kouyami, and then he’ll be truly free. After that, Teddy wants the world to know who he is, and he wants Roper to help him with that plan. That can mean either of two things: he wants Aurora to go international instead of being limited to Colombia, or he wants Roper to publicly embrace him as his son. While the first one is possible, the second option is impossible, because nobody can know that Roper is still alive, right? Either way, Roper says that he is game. But until then, he tells Teddy to focus on the shipment and make sure nothing goes wrong (by saying so, he probably jinxed the whole operation). Teddy takes off, and Roper calls a certain Mr. Whistler, who tells him that there’ll be a car waiting for him at the airport and that they have much to discuss. Since Jonathan has to be back at the hotel to be sent off to Paris by Teddy, he tells Martin to stay there and update him if Roper does anything shifty while he heads back to the city. Martin secretly gets ahold of Roper’s dogs and fits their collars with bugs so that he can listen in on everything that he’s saying.

Jonathan Reunites With Angela

Sally tells Alejandro to prepare to leave his house while she distracts Beni, and that plan works out pretty well. Elsewhere, Jonathan gets a call from Teddy, who informs him that he is en route to the hotel, and Jonathan assures Teddy that he is packed and ready to leave for Paris. That’s a lie, and Jonathan actually barely makes it to the hotel in time, thereby preventing Teddy from suspecting that Jonathan was tailing him all this while. After reaching the parking lot of the airport, Teddy tries to ascertain if Jonathan is going to betray him after leaving Colombia, because Jonathan knows way too much about his operation. Once Jonathan makes it clear that he is Teddy’s friend and he’ll always have his back, he bids Jonathan farewell. As Jonathan proceeds to the security section, Teddy heads out without waiting for Jonathan to actually board that plane to Paris. That’s because he is too eager to kill Alejandro. He calls up Beni and orders him to move in on the prosecutor and hold on to him until he arrives at the destination. If Teddy wouldn’t have been that desperate, he would have witnessed Jonathan doubling back and receiving Angela. Speaking of reunions, Roper reunites with Sandy and asks him how he secured his freedom from the clutches of the Egyptian officials. Sandy says that he is on parole; furthermore, it seems like he has finally separated from his wife, Caro. Since that’s not very exciting, Sandy asks Roper to arrive at the topic of his survival. Well, he was never actually killed, if that’s what you are wondering.

As explained to Jonathan by Angela, the night before the body identification in Syria, Roper visited her in her room and told her all about his deal with his Syrian captors, and how he intends to pay them back in full by getting his hands on $300 million that Jonathan had stolen for him. To make that happen, he wanted Angela and Jonathan to move out of his path. So, Roper told Angela that if she didn’t do a convincing job of claiming that he was actually dead and then retire from the River House, he’d kill her, her family, and Jonathan. In the hopes of living to fight another day, Angela did Roper’s bidding, thereby allowing Roper to lie on that table like a dead body without setting off any alarm bells. Angela then went back to London and informed Rex about this whole ordeal. But by then, Roper had already disappeared. It wasn’t until Mayra arrived that it became apparent that Roper was on the move again. Jonathan gets into an argument with Angela over this, because he doesn’t like the fact that he was kept in the dark for so long. He tells her that he needs to stop Roper from doing a coup in Colombia and paying off his Syrian captors, thereby rendering their sacrifices in Season 1 meaningless, but Angela wants him to give her some time so that she can figure out the “civil war” that’s unfolding between British intelligence agencies. Jonathan says he can’t do that and takes his leave.

Roper Explains His Deal With Omar, Cabrera, And Mayra

From Roper and Sandy’s conversation, we learn that Mayra has cut a deal with the former, via Adam, to give him and Roper the keys to the Wenchurch Estate if they manage to give her Colombia. Roper is ecstatic about living in England again—near Oxford, to be specific—and he expresses how much he likes Mayra and her penchant for corrupt practices. His spirits are lifted even more when Sandy hands over his “bonus gift”: a British passport. In stark contrast to these oldies’ excited demeanor, Teddy is devastated after finding out that Alejandro has thwarted Beni and escaped. He orders Beni to scour the entirety of Medellin and find out where Alejandro is. Where is he, though? In a hotel with Sally going through the list of the materials in Teddy’s shipment. Jonathan arrives there too, shakes hands with Alejandro, and gets straight to the topic of Jose. Alejandro says that Jose wants to destroy the country, and Jonathan underscores the fact that Jose is doing what he’s doing because he’s backed by the British government. Alejandro thinks that the first step to stopping this destructive Colombian-British operation is by getting in touch with the head of the Supreme Court, Consuelo, and convincing her to open that shipment and confiscate everything. When Alejandro calls Consuelo’s office, her PA, Arturo, picks up the call, and as soon as he refuses to interrupt Consuelo’s conversation with someone, it becomes clear that Arturo is in Teddy’s pocket. I don’t know how Alejandro doesn’t clock that, and he ends up blurting all the information about the shipment. Arturo tells him that he’ll call him back after conveying this information to Consuelo, but that’s obviously a lie.

Going back to the conversation between Roper and Sandy, we learn that the dogs that Roper had in the previous season have been killed by the Spanish police to spite him; I am sure many must’ve been wondering what happened, and well, there’s your answer. After mourning their death for a few seconds, Sandy asks Roper how he found the motivation to rebuild his empire. Roper says that he was initially fueled by revenge, but then he came to the realization that he wasn’t the only one who had lost everything; Omar and Kouyami had as well. Hence, he spent whatever energy he had left in his body and soul to repay them, and his captors’ benevolence or naivete became his ticket out of that hellhole he was in in Syria. Since Roper used to frequent Colombia back in the day, he had connections there. He was aware of its socio-political status. And he knew that Cabrera was desperate to shield himself from the consequences of his actions. Once he learned that Mayra and her investors were looking to mine the hell out of Colombia, he brokered a deal between Cabrera and Mayra, where Mayra would give Cabrera the weapons he needed to perform a coup, and Cabrera would give Mayra access to his country’s fertile lands. For doing all this, Roper would get back his $300 million dollars, which he’ll give to his captors, and a ticket to his mansion on the outskirts of Oxford. However, to make all of that happen, the shipment needs to get through, but it’s currently stuck in Cartagena Port.

Basil Confronts Adam

Mayra gets a call from an unknown man, asking her if her business with Teddy is going alright, and she claims that everything’s fine, even though it’s clearly not. Elsewhere in the same office, Basil can be seen looking at some CCTV footage. That’s interrupted by Mayra, who just wants to confirm if the name associated with that Luxembourg account was Andrew Birch or not. Once Basil says that it was, she takes his leave, and Basil goes back to analyzing that footage, and that’s where we see Adam Hollywell and Mayra fraternizing with none other than Sandy Langbourne. Sandy was last seen in episode 6 of The Night Manager season 1, being taken away by the Egyptian authorities. And, yeah, now he’s in England, it seems. Basil ambushes Adam at the Mayfair Club and confronts him about his meeting with Sandy. Adam tries to deny it, but Basil reminds him about Jacob’s fate and says that if he “leaks” the fact that Adam’s laxness caused the discovery of that meeting, his Colombian “friends” won’t like it and he’ll end up getting a bullet in his head. Once Adam ensures that Mayra is in the dark about this, he agrees to sit down with Basil and see if they can cut a deal that’ll convince Basil to keep that meeting under wraps.

Basil and Adam’s conversation starts off with a brief look at their respective backgrounds, and while Basil’s might be false, it seems like Adam is stupid enough to be truthful with Basil. He comes clean about Mayra needing his help to “cook something” in Colombia. He says that his “investors” intend to mine the country for copper, oil, and lithium. So far, the show has made it seem like this is a retread of the first season, with Teddy trying to be a warmonger just like his dad. But now it seems that the warmongering is just a front for conducting a regime change and then mining the hell out of Colombia. Basil is understandably shocked, but, of course, he doesn’t express it; at least he knows what the endgame of this Colombian operation is now. On that note, Basil takes Adam’s leave, because he has to immediately come up with a plan that’ll help Jonathan and Sally save that country from going to hell. While waiting for Arturo’s callback, Sally informs Jonathan that Basil has accessed Adam’s emails from the past 6 months. The most recent one is about an EMP that has the power to take out the electrical grid of the whole goddamn city. As soon as that goes off, the civil war that Cabrera wants will commence, and when the dust settles, Mayra will get what she wants.

Teddy Lies to Roper

Teddy returns home, cursing about Alejandro’s disappearance. Roxana is seen packing to leave for Miami while talking to her mother. That’s interrupted by Beni, as he takes away her phone and tells her to go to Teddy. As Roxana is walking to Teddy’s chambers, we can overhear him having an argument with Juan about whether or not they should inform Roper about recent developments. Juan thinks that they should keep him up-to-date, but Teddy wants to keep his dad in the dark until he fixes the situation. When Roxana tries to learn why Teddy is so agitated, he updates her about everything that has happened so far, while making it seem like Roxana has a hand in Alejandro getting his hands on his list and also escaping from his house. Why does Teddy suspect Roxana? Because Juan claims that, on the night that Teddy was about to kill Jonathan, he left her in Teddy’s office long enough for her to make a copy of the list. Well, technically he’s right, but Roxana does a great job of convincing him that she didn’t copy that list and give it to Jonathan, who then gave it to Alejandro. Before Teddy can go absolutely ballistic on Roxana, he gets a call from Roper, asking about his progress when it comes to killing the prosecutor. Teddy lies to Roper that everything’s fine, and Roper senses that, but doesn’t get into an argument with Teddy about it. After hanging up on his dad, Teddy tells Viktor to call Chico to help him with nabbing Alejandro.

What does Chico do? He picks up a kid who is indebted to Teddy and employs him as his driver for the day. Teddy heads out as well, and orders Beni and Viktor to keep an eye on Roxana. In the meantime, Arturo calls Alejandro and tells him to come to the Parliament at 3 P.M. to have his meeting with Consuelo. Jonathan reminds him that when he meets her, he should tell her about Roper, because it’s important for them to catch him. Speaking of Roper, he calls Juan about sensing Teddy’s lie, and Juan blurts out the truth about Alejandro’s disappearance. That angers Roper a lot, and he tells Juan to get in touch with him only when they’ve actually killed Alejandro. Sandy wonders who Roper’s contact person in Colombia is, and he lies to him about his true relationship with Teddy. He says that Teddy is as loyal as one of his dogs, though. Sandy wonders if Roper intends to take Teddy to England once their work in Colombia is over. Roper insinuates that he intends to sever his ties with Teddy before going back home, but then Sandy says that they should kill him once the operation has been completed, because he knows too much about them. Roper says that they’ll see what they should do to Teddy once they are in the clear. That said, I have a feeling that Roper is going to kill Sandy at the end of this ordeal for even suggesting that he kill his own son. For the time being, Roper gives him the task of making some moves to reunite him with Danny, even if it means bribing Jed with a lot of money, and then bids him goodbye.

Alejandro Is Dead

During the closing moments of the episode, we see Jonathan dropping off Alejandro at the Parliament buildings. As he is keeping track of Alejandro’s movements, he gets a call from Roxana, who tells him that she’s going to miss her flight and discreetly suggests that Jonathan should cancel his plans too. Before he can act on Roxana’s suggestion, Alejandro is cornered by General Sanchez and his soldiers, and he’s ordered to reveal the contents of his briefcase. Jonathan tells Sally that he has a feeling something is off about this whole situation, and he tells her to track Roxana’s phone too, because she’s also in danger. Sanchez asks Alejandro how he has gotten his hands on this copy of the list and the location of the original document. Alejandro refuses to say anything to Sanchez, and that’s when he commands his soldiers to hand over the prosecutor to Chico and his kid companion. Jonathan spots the daylight abduction, hijacks a bike, and goes after Chico’s car. Chico orders the kid to drive to the abandoned warehouse where Teddy is waiting for them, which means that Alejandro isn’t the only hostage there; the kid is one as well. In the ending of The Night Manager Season 2, Episode 4, Teddy confronts Alejandro and asks him why he didn’t accept the offer that he made him. Alejandro essentially says that he has some values, and there are some lines that he’s unwilling to cross. With age, he has learned how important it is to keep the country stable, not for himself but for future generations. Teddy is too young to understand that. All he knows is profit, even if that means sacrificing the future of his country. Hence, when he hears Alejandro trying to give him some perspective, he pulls out his gun and shoots him in the head.

I know that viewers might question Alejandro’s death, since they’ve just watched Roper come back from the dead, but I can assure you that Alejandro is dead for real. Do you know who else is really dead? Chico. Yeah, when Teddy is about to kill that kid, Jonathan kills Chico. That causes Teddy to run for cover and gives the kid the opportunity to rush to Jonathan. He puts the kid on his bike and escapes from the warehouse. Teddy could have boarded his car and gone after him, but he’s too shocked by the revelation that his Hong Kong investor isn’t actually an investor from Hong Kong. After getting away from Teddy, Jonathan catches up to Beni, who was driving Roxana to Teddy’s current location, and shoots him down. Yes, Beni is dead too. Jonathan abandons the bike, tells the kid to get into the car, and drives away with both him and Roxana. Teddy finally comes clean and tells Roper about everything that has gone down and how he’s been betrayed by his “friend.” Roper tells Teddy to send him a picture of this guy, and he’s not entirely surprised to find out that the thorn on his road to success is once again Jonathan Pine. Does this change anything? Well, not really, because Alejandro is still dead, which means that a new prosecutor will arrive and that EMP is going to reach Medellin and start the civil war. However, now that Roper knows that he’s up against Jonathan and his cohorts, he’ll probably take a more hands-on approach to pulling this operation off instead of letting Teddy handle things. I am sure that Jonathan will succeed in saving Colombia, but at what cost? That’s something that remains to be seen. Also, how excited are you for Jonathan and Roper’s rematch? Let me know in the comments section below.
