In episode 4 of The Night Manager Season 2, it was revealed that Roper had cracked some kind of a deal with his Syrian captors, where he had promised them that he’d give them the $300 million that he owed them if they let him live. Somehow, Omar and Kouyami believed in Roper, and he was allowed to leave. Next, he forced Angela to appear for the identification of his “dead body” and claim that he was actually dead in front of Jonathan if she didn’t want to die along with her family and Jonathan. Angela obliged, and Roper then orchestrated an arrangement between Teddy, Mayra, and Cabrera, where he’d help them pull off a regime change in Colombia in exchange for the money he needed to pay Omar and Kouyami, as well as a cozy spot near Oxford. To pull that off, Teddy was bringing in an immensely powerful EMP to cause a blackout in Medellin, but that shipment was stuck at the Cartagena Port because of Alejandro. That created some financial issues on Teddy’s end, which ended up being Jonathan’s entry point into this whole fiasco. He tried to help Alejandro get to Consuelo, the head of the Supreme Court, to blow this whole case wide open, but Alejandro was abducted and subsequently killed by Teddy so that he could be replaced by one of his own men. Teddy would have killed Roxana and Octavio, a kid who was involved in Alejandro’s kidnapping, but Jonathan saved both of them and made a run for it. When Teddy showed the picture of the guy who had befriended him under the pretext of solving his financial issues to Roper, he realized that Jonathan had re-entered his life. What did he do next? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Roper Tells Teddy About Who Jonathan Is
In The Night Manager Season 2, episode 5, Roper gets on a call with Mayra to have a little chat about Jonathan, who he is, and what he had done to Roper in the past. He tells Mayra to take care of Jonathan’s support teams in London and Colombia, while he takes care of Jonathan himself. As Roper hangs up, Teddy arrives before him, looking like a hurt puppy. Martin overhears (through the listening devices fitted in the dogs’ collars) Teddy, Juan, and Roper having a heated discussion about how Teddy allowed Jonathan to get so close to them. Roper gives both of them a rundown on who and what Jonathan actually is. And then he asks Teddy if he has been charmed enough by Jonathan to be disloyal to his own father. Teddy says that he hasn’t; he claims that he didn’t reveal anything to Jonathan about what he’s actually doing and what Roper’s role in all this is. He even points out the fact that Jonathan has failed to interrupt the flow of their regime change project because Alejandro is dead, and once the new prosecutor clears the shipment that’s at Cartagena Port, they’ll deliver it to Cabreras, and Bob’s your uncle. Roper knows that, but he underscores the fact that they needed to do this as discreetly as possible. Due to Teddy’s ignorance—or the fact that he didn’t show the face of the “Hong Kong investor” that he was doing business with to his dad—Jonathan knows almost everything about Roper’s operation. Sure, he has failed to save Alejandro, but there’s no saying what he’ll do down the road.
Roxana Takes Jonathan and Octavio to Her House
As Jonathan drives Roxana and Octavio as far away as possible from Teddy, they hear on the news that the authorities have pinned the blame of Alejandro’s death entirely on Octavio, because they are in Teddy’s pocket. Which means that even if Octavio wants to tell the world about the fact that Teddy is the one who killed Alejandro, he can’t. Sally gets the same news from the telly, and she is absolutely devastated. As she is getting back her bearings, she gets a call from Basil, telling her to leave Colombia immediately. Basil himself is trying to catch a train and escape from London, but he realizes that he is being cornered by Mayra’s associates. So, he gives Angela a call, tells her that he can’t meet her, leaves his laptop at a gift shop (which is picked up by Angela, most probably played by Olivia Colman’s body double), and then gets himself captured by Mayra’s people. As for Angela, she takes a look at her new passport but doesn’t use it, because she doesn’t want to abandon Jonathan when he’s in such a dicey situation. Speaking of Jonathan, he and his new “friends” reach Roxana’s ancestral house, which has been lying abandoned ever since her father was killed there. As Roxana gets a change of clothes and Octavio takes a breather, Jonathan checks out a voice note that he received from Martin where Roper can be heard telling Juan and Teddy about Jonathan’s true nature. That means that the cat is out of the bag, and there’s no point hiding anymore. Hence, he prepares to confront Roper as soon as possible.
Frisky Is Back
After telling Octavio to stay put, who, by the way, warns Jonathan about Roxana’s true allegiance, Jonathan comes clean with Roxana and informs her that he’s going to meet Roper. Roxana wonders if he’s going to get any assistance from his team. Jonathan either doesn’t want to reveal the presence of his team to Roxana because he doesn’t trust her completely, or maybe he is under the impression that his team has been burnt and is on the run, which is why he tells Roxana that he’s on his own. Roxana wonders if Jonathan will be able to deliver on any of the promises that he made to her in order to get her to betray Teddy, and Jonathan says that, at the moment, he can’t say anything. Things get a bit tense between them, and by “tense,” I mean sexual, because Roxana seemingly wants to make sure that the one possible reason why Jonathan is stringing her along is off the table. On that note, Jonathan takes Roxana’s leave, and even though he tells her to stay put, she makes it clear that she isn’t going to listen to him anymore. Meanwhile, Roper brings in Frisky (yeah, they’re bringing back almost every character who made it to the end of Season 1), and when Teddy notices that, he feels that his whole operation is slipping out of his hands and going into his dad’s. Roper informs Teddy that he has brought in Frisky to hunt down Jonathan, and when Teddy says that he wants to do that job, Roper tells him to focus on the shipment. While they’re going back and forth on this topic, Teddy gets a call from Jonathan, who tells him to pass the phone to his dad. Jonathan doesn’t waste too much time on the phone; he straight-up tells Roper when and where he wants to meet him. Roper heads for the restaurant where Jonathan is waiting for him, while Teddy goes off to Cartagena Port.
Jonathan Reunites With Roper
Roper arrives at the restaurant, orders food for both himself and Jonathan, and they partake in a bit of catching up. Once that’s out of the way, Jonathan shows his cards. He says that he has the shipment list, he knows who the arms are being sold to, he is aware of the coup that he is arranging on Cabrera’s behalf via Aurora, and he has Roxana, who is willing to become a state witness. Based on all that, Jonathan wants Roper to turn himself in, along with his collaborators, those who are in Colombia as well as in Britain. Roper wonders why he should do that, and Jonathan says that he is going to put a stop to this operation, and once he does, Roper will find himself back in a Syrian cell, this time with no chance of convincing Omar and Kouyami that he can return their money to them. Roper begins poking holes in what Jonathan believes is an ironclad case against him, and he comes to the conclusion that he doesn’t need to do Jonathan’s bidding at all. He advises Jonathan to leave the restaurant as peacefully as he came there, go to the house where he is currently staying, collect the shipment document and Roxana, deliver them to him, and then leave the country, whilst ignoring the fact that it’s about to go up in flames. In exchange, Jonathan will be paid $50 million. That prompts Jonathan to get into a heated argument about morality and ethics with Roper, who even eggs him on to forget everything and kill him there and then if he’s so desperate to put a stop to his evil deeds. Jonathan obviously doesn’t fall for Roper’s trap, and he takes his leave with the message that, the following day, he’s going to call Roper on a burner phone, which is when Roper is going to hand himself in or watch his newly resurrected empire be reduced to rubble. Roper lets Jonathan go with the warning that, one day or another, he will remove him out of his path.
Jonathan Tells Teddy About Danny
As Jonathan gets into his car to leave the restaurant where he met Roper, Martin calls him to tell him that Frisky is following him. Jonathan asks Martin if he has recorded the whole conversation, and once Martin confirms that he has, Jonathan tells him to stay out of sight and rendezvous at their usual meeting point. Jonathan hits the road, and so does Frisky. When they reach a spot that is more or less devoid of people, Frisky calls Roper to ask if he should kill Jonathan, but Roper tells him to follow Jonathan so that they can learn where Roxana is. Jonathan makes a pit stop at a gas station, store where Martin has been waiting for him. Martin informs Jonathan that Sally is still in Medellin because she’s trying to complete what Alejandro started: informing Consuelo about the coup. Jonathan tells Martin to return to his stakeout spot near Roper’s residence, listen to what he’s planning, and give him regular updates. Martin informs Jonathan about his exit strategy, which’ll allow him to give Frisky the slip. And, yeah, by the time Frisky can figure out what’s happened, Jonathan has already made his escape. Meanwhile, Sally secretly contacts Consuelo and tells her about the events leading to Alejandro’s death, and what’s going to happen in the upcoming days or even hours. Going back to Jonathan, he gets in touch with Teddy after he has secured the shipment from Cartagena Port and tells him to meet him at the port from where they took the boating trip, which almost ended with Jonathan’s death. Teddy obliges, and once he gets to that spot, he notices a laptop sitting there with some audio files on it. When he presses play, he hears Roper’s conversation with Sandy about how he’s going to abandon Teddy once the coup is done. Jonathan arrives in person to tell him that he knows everything about Teddy’s backstory, and he urges Teddy to play the last file. That’s when he learns about Danny’s existence, and that totally breaks Teddy’s heart. Jonathan manages to calm Teddy down, and then he takes him to his sister, Clara, who has been raring to see his face for ages.
Roper Discovers the Listening Devices
While having a conversation with Juan about what Jonathan is probably planning to do, Roper plays around with his dogs, and that’s when he notices the listening devices in their collars. He signals everyone to pretend that he hasn’t found them yet, and then orders his troops to go into the woods and nab whoever has been eavesdropping on them for god knows how long. Martin makes a run for it and barely manages to escape the clutches of Roper’s men. Meanwhile, Teddy takes Jonathan back to Cartagena Port and tells him what Cabrera plans to do with the EMP device. Jonathan already knows all about that, or at least he has predicted how the EMP will be used to trigger chaos, how the government will be blamed for said chaos, and how that’ll allow Cabrera to take the throne of Colombia. Hence, Jonathan wants to learn how Teddy plans to deliver the EMP device to Cabrera. Teddy says that he is going to drop it at a military base that’s located near the port, from where it’ll be picked up and then flown to Cabrera’s camp in the jungle. Jonathan asks Teddy to give him the flight plans of that plane, or any other essential details that can help him divert that aircraft away from Cabrera. On that note, Teddy and Jonathan part ways. Teddy boards the pickup truck that’s going to lead the truck carrying the EMP device to the aforementioned army base, while Jonathan leaves the port without getting spotted. I know that Roper has given Jonathan some time to decide what he wants to do regarding his decision to hinder his operation, but once Jonathan gave Frisky the slip, I think he should have at least alerted his own men to keep an eye out for that White man roaming around with Teddy.
Roper Kills The Dogs
Roper returns from his expedition in the forest, goes straight to his dogs, and kills them. Juan tries to check in on Roper, but he tells Juan to get the hell away from him, because he needs some alone time. But as soon as he notices that Roxana is calling Juan, he tells him to stay and talk to the girl. Jonathan reunites with Martin and Sally, and he tells her that he has convinced Teddy to betray Roper and give him the means to destroy the EMP device. Sally asks Jonathan if he truly believes Teddy will turn against Roper, and Jonathan admits that he isn’t all that sure yet. Martin brings Jonathan and Sally to his sister’s place so that they can lay low there until Teddy notifies them. We get a brief glimpse of Basil in London, where he’s been tortured by Charlie (Mayra’s henchman) into admitting to Mayra that he has been tracking her every move and that he knows about the Colombian coup. Mayra wants to know what Jonathan is up to, but Basil doesn’t snitch on him. For that, Mayra asks Charlie to put a bullet in Basil’s head. We don’t actually see his dead body; we don’t see the dogs’ dead bodies either, but I think all three of them are in fact dead. Going back to Medellin, Teddy reunites with Roper and informs him that the EMP device has been loaded onto the plane that’ll travel to Cabrera’s base. Roper wonders why Teddy had switched off his phone at the port. Teddy lies that he didn’t want to be disturbed, whereas in reality, he didn’t want to be tracked to the spot where he met Jonathan. Roper ignores that lie and takes him to the house to show him how it’s being turned upside down to search for more bugs like the ones that were found in the dogs’ collars. Roper uses this opportunity to let Teddy know that he’s going to lead this operation from here on out, because it’s evident that Teddy isn’t as efficient as Roper wants him to be.
Teddy Betrays Roper
As Roper leaves the house to take a walk, Teddy sneaks into his dad’s office and goes through his stuff. That’s where he finds a photo of Danny, which confirms that everything that Jonathan told Teddy about his father’s true face is accurate. Since Teddy is sure that Jonathan is being more honest with him than his dad is, he decides to send the details of the flight plan to Jonathan. Jonathan shares that info with Martin and Sally and underscores the fact that they need to stop that plane from reaching its destination no matter the cost. That said, is Teddy setting up a trap for Jonathan and his team in order to impress his dad? I think that could be the case. I know that Teddy has learned that Roper sees him like the dogs he has just killed. So, if Roper can kill those dogs for no fault of their own (I mean, how could those dogs have known that they had been bugged? And even if they did, how could they have communicated it to Roper? He will definitely put a bullet in Teddy’s head if he learns that his own son has knowingly betrayed him. So, maybe out of fear and a sense of self-preservation, Teddy is leading Jonathan into a trap. Or maybe I am overthinking this, and Teddy has come to the realization that if Roper is so merciless towards creatures as innocent as dogs, he won’t show his own son any sympathy for being tricked by Jonathan. Hence, it’s better to join hands with Jonathan and help him take down Roper rather than watch Roper get all the power that he wants and then shoot him in the head as he leaves Colombia to live a life of luxury in Jolly Old England.
Roxana Betrays Jonathan
In the ending of The Night Manager Season 2, episode 5, Roper approaches Juan’s car, and the person who steps out from it is none other than Roxana. Roper says that she can be his friend if she helps him get to Jonathan. If she deceives him, he’ll cut Roxana into pieces and send her to her mother in Miami over the course of 30 days. Roxana seems to be willing to help out Roper because she feels betrayed by Jonathan. This seems like an overreaction, and at the same time, it is totally understandable. I mean, all this while, Roxana was trying to get away from Teddy and everyone associated with him, and now she’s back in the lion’s den; well, the lion’s dad’s den, to be specific. Why? Just because Jonathan has said that he won’t be able to deliver on all of his promises? That’s unfair. He didn’t say that he’s abandoning her. Jonathan always saves the good guys, and if she’d stayed put, I’m sure he would have safely transported her to Miami. However, there she is, in the most dangerous place in Colombia. Well, Jonathan’s story always has a damsel in distress. Said damsels’ stories don’t always have a happy ending. Therefore, if Roxana doesn’t play her cards right, she’ll end up dead before Jonathan can get to her. Alternatively, there’s a chance that this is all a ploy of Jonathan’s, and he has purposefully sent Roxana to Roper to be his informant or sabotage Roper’s operation from within while he’s busy looking at that EMP device? As pointed out by Roper himself, Jonathan has to prove that Roper is actually Roper to put him on trial. Hence, maybe that’s what Roxana’s going to do? She’ll collect all the documents that prove that Gilberto Hanson is really Richard Roper and send that to a law enforcement authority that wants to punish war criminals. Or, again, maybe I am overthinking this and Roxana just wants to get back at Jonathan for leaving her in the lurch. What are your thoughts on the same, though?
