‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 Episode 5 Theories: Will Teddy Die?

Published

The fourth episode of The Night Manager Season 2 ended with Richard Roper finally finding out that his sworn enemy, Jonathan Pine, is back in his life, something Roper had gone out of his way to make sure wouldn’t happen again. Some six years ago, Roper had devised an elaborate plan to make Pine and the rest of the world believe that he was killed by his Syrian captors, but Pine was never convinced. His nightmares never actually left his side, which he believed was a hint that he had some unfinished business with Roper, though he couldn’t figure out what it really was. But eventually, Pine’s fears came true, when he saw Roper in flesh and blood before him. He figured out that Roper had faked his death so he could rebuild his empire and rise from the ashes again. But Pine wouldn’t let this monster thrive again, which was why he had been trying his best to put a stop to Roper’s operations in Colombia. However, the question here is: now that Roper knows what Pine is up to, will Roper let Pine ruin his plans for the second time? Well, I have a few things in mind which I expect to see in the next episode of The Night Manager Season 2, so with a spoiler warning, let’s jump straight into it.

Teddy May Turn Against Roper

Okay so first thing first, I believe Roper is gonna call Teddy and tell him that his Hong Kong investor is none other than Jonathan Pine, who tried to wreck his arms deal in Cairo and brought down his entire operation. And even though Roper may want to kill Pine himself, he cannot leave his safe haven, because to the world, Roper is already dead. And he cannot risk getting exposed, at least not until he has paid back his Syrian captors. In short, Roper will have no other option but to order Teddy to get rid of Pine, because he was the one who brought Pine into this operation. This suggests that we can expect a one-on-one clash between Pine and Teddy, in which Teddy will either get severely injured or breathe his last. I believe he’s more likely to get wounded, because that will give Pine an opportunity to convince Teddy that he’s not the bad guy here, and it’s actually his father, Roper, who’s using him to serve his motive, and he won’t think twice before abandoning him again. Because that’s what monsters like Roper do. They exploit people and get rid of them after they get what they want. I am not sure how Pine is going to turn Teddy against Roper, but I have a feeling it’s going to happen, sooner or later, and Teddy will eventually be the one responsible for Roper’s downfall for the second time. I wasn’t sure of this theory at first, but when Roper told his old pal, Sandy Langbourne, that he had only one son, I knew where all this headed. Roper doesn’t think Teddy is civilized enough for the English crowd, so he’s gonna use him like a dog on a leash, and when Teddy will no longer be of any use to him, he’s just gonna get him killed. So yeah, Pine has a lot of explaining and convincing to do, and how he’s gonna do it is something I’ll surely look forward to finding out in the next episode.

Basil May Get Exposed

If you remember in the second episode, MI6 chief Mayra Cavendish inquired of tech expert Basil, if they could get Alex Goodwin, aka, Jonathan Pine’s dead body from Spain, but Basil lied to her. He told her that the corpse was destroyed in the bomb blast, and there was hardly anything left of it. However, if Roper or Teddy are going to send Mayra a picture of their Hong Kong Investor, Matthew Ellis, then she will likely be able to connect the dots and come to the conclusion that Basil might have helped Pine fake his death so he can investigate the illegal arms deal and catch Mayra and her partners-in-crime red handed. In episode 4, Mayra already suspected that Basil was hiding things from her, which was why she inquired about Andrew Birch, the covert operative who had gotten into Roper’s inner circle to gather evidence against him. This piece of information convinced Mayra that Alex Goodwin wasn’t a real person. It was an identity created by Rex Mayhew to reinstate the operative into MI6. And I believe she already knows that Rex couldn’t have done this on his own, meaning someone else must have helped him, someone who knows the system inside out and knows how to rig it. Someone like Basil. So if she somehow figures out that Basil is working against her, she won’t waste a moment to seek help from her paymasters, asking Roper or Teddy to send some muscle to London to get rid of Basil, the same way they got Rex Mayhew killed.

Angela’s Redemption

We know that Angela lied to Pine about Roper’s death to protect him and her family from Roper’s wrath. However, as soon as Pine found out the truth, he felt betrayed, because Angela was the person he trusted the most in the world. And he wasn’t sure if he would be able to trust her again. This means Angela has some work to do, not only to gain Pine’s trust, but also to mend her relationship with him, because she knows that Pine’s the only person who can bring down Roper. He has done it once, and he can do it again. So what I believe Angela is gonna do is use all her connections in intelligence to expose Mayra and stop her from doing more damage than she already has. Mayra is an important cog in Roper’s operation, and with her gone, Roper’s dream of returning to England and reuniting with his son, Danny, are going to be shattered forever.

The Repercussions of Alejandro’s Death

In episode 4, Teddy’s man, Chico, enlisted the help of Octavio, an orphan from Teddy’s NGO, Aurora, because Chico needed someone to drive the vehicle to kidnap Alejandro and bring him to Teddy. Well, long story short, Octavio witnessed Teddy shooting Alejandro in the head, which made Octavio a prime witness to the crime. Most likely, Teddy would have shot Octavio too, to wrap up the loose ends, but before he could harm the boy, Pine shot down Chico, rescued Octavio, and saved his life. Now Octavio sees Pine as his hero. I guess you know Pine’s no stranger to Octavio, and it’s not the first time he has shown kindness to the boy. Octavio’s the same boy Pine taught how to open a bottle of champagne at Teddy’s fund raising gala, so what I am trying to say here is that Octavio trusts Pine and, simultaneously, he hates Teddy, because the man whom he believed to be his savior tried to kill him to cover up his crimes. So what I believe could happen is that Pine may bring Octavio to Consuelo Arbenz to inform her how an international arms dealer is funding her country’s regime change operation. For those of you who still don’t know what Roper’s ultimate plan is, here it is in brief. He has smuggled hi-tech weapons and an EMP device from the UK for a Colombian right-wing politician, Jose Cabrera, who is planning a coup with the military to overthrow the current government and seize power by force. So if Pine is able to get Consuelo Arbenz on his side, then he will be able to stop Cabrera and his friends from achieving their sinister objective. This means Roper won’t be getting any money from Cabrera, and that was how he was planning to pay back his captors, meaning Roper won’t get his freedom back, and he’ll forever have to hide in the mountains away from his motherland. Additionally, Octavio’s testimony will help Arbenz to issue an arrest warrant against Teddy for killing public prosecutors in cold-blood. This will also give her an excuse to impound Teddy’s shipment and freeze his bank accounts as long as he’s under scrutiny. So if Pine is able to pull this off, then it will buy him some time to orchestrate a plan against Roper so he can put an end to his evil. Well, these are my thoughts on everything I expect to see in the next episodes of The Night Manager Season 2, but if you have anything else to add, then please share your comments below.
