After a very dramatic turn in the previous episode, Rudy is back on the hunt for a job. He hadn’t yet cleared his bar exam, and he’d been fired from Tinley Britt and Bruiser’s firm, so no reputable firm was interested in hiring him. Rudy was about to run out of money, and his life was pretty much falling apart. But even then, Rudy didn’t shy away from doing what was morally right—he was determined to make sure that Kelly was safe, and he also couldn’t completely give up on the Donny Ray Black case. Will Rudy find a way to get the case back? Let’s find out in The Rainmaker episode 6.
Spoiler Alert
Why did Rudy bring Kelly to Dot Black’s house?
Kelly was not safe as long as Cliff was around her, so Rudy wanted to keep him away from her. Kelly finally addressed how she intended on dealing with Cliff; she mentioned the money she’d been saving and how, when Cliff found out about it, he physically assaulted her, and that was how she ended up at the hospital. Kelly was desperate to get away from him, but she’d also come to accept that there was no safe place for her. The cops had refused to help her because her husband was a policeman, and wherever she’d tried to escape so far, he’d always found her. Rudy promised to help her, though Kelly didn’t think that was possible. She tried to delay her discharge from the hospital, but that was not a long-term solution. One morning, Rudy received a call from Kelly asking him if he truly meant what he said about wanting to help her. Rudy reassured her that he would do everything in his power to make sure that she was safe. She told him that she was being discharged, and Cliff would arrive at the hospital within an hour to take her home. Rudy rushed out of the bar immediately. Before he left, Prince had advised him not to take Kelly to a place where she could easily be found and put her life at risk again. So, instead of driving her to his mother’s house, he decided to take her to Dot Black’s place. She was happy to help Rudy; she’d always known that he was someone who always tried to do the right thing, and she hoped he would do the same in her son’s case. Kelly will be staying at Dot Black’s house until Rudy can come up with a better plan. She will have to legally separate from her husband, and Rudy can help her with the process. Considering there is no obvious connection between her and Dot Black, Cliff will not manage to track her down unless he follows Rudy to her house.
What was in the letter that Rudy’s mother received?
When Rudy’s mother learned that he’d been fired again, she wanted him to sit back and take note of how his temper had repeatedly gotten in his way. Although his heart was always in the right place, the way he dealt with tricky situations wasn’t always ideal. Rudy immediately started to compare himself with his late brother, stating that, in a way, he’d failed to be like him. But Rudy’s mother reminded him that she didn’t expect him to act/become like his brother. He was allowed to be himself and make his own mistakes without always thinking how his brother would’ve dealt with the situation differently. John wasn’t better or smarter, his mother stated; he was just his own person, and it was impossible for Rudy to be the same guy. She hoped they could stop pretending that he would come back into their lives, and instead accept his death and take a step towards healing from the loss.
Towards the end of The Rainmaker episode 6, when Rudy met his mother again, she told him that she’d received a letter addressed to him. As it turned out, the reason why Rudy didn’t receive his bar result was because he’d got the highest score in ten years. The examination committee had had to recheck his papers just to make sure they’d got it right, and that was why it took more time to publish his result. Rudy and his mother finally visited John at the cemetery. Rudy wanted to share the news with his brother, because he knew that he would’ve been so proud.
Did Bruiser Rehire Rudy?
Rudy wasn’t ready to let go of the case just because Bruiser had decided to fire him. He was deeply attached to Dot Black, and he was afraid of disappointing her. She knew that Bruiser didn’t care as much about the case as Rudy did, because he knew how it felt to lose a loved one. She pressured him to get the Tissue Committee reports one way or another, and that was all the more reason why Rudy refused to give up. While visiting Kelly at the hospital, Rudy had noticed Bernie Manfred storming out of the hospital. He was the guy who’d fired Jackie, and Bruiser had a deposition on him. Although he was not involved in the case, Rudy decided to dig up dirt on Manfred to convince Bruiser and Deck to bring him back on their team. He’d been following Manfred’s social media, and it looked like he’d made a lot of money soon after Jackie Lemancyzk lost her job. Rudy took the help of his college classmate and found out that Manfred was involved in illegal trading.
In The Rainmaker episode 6’s ending, Bruiser arrived at the deposition at the Tinley Firm, and Deck and Bruiser were taken by surprise. Rudy explained to Deck that Manfred didn’t make enough to afford a luxury lifestyle, yet here he was driving an expensive car and traveling the world, and Rudy had information that he’d sold most of his stocks immediately after his conversation with Jackie on 2nd September. Rudy begged Bruiser to let him attend the deposition because he strongly believed that he could get Bernie Manfred to admit that there was something important in the Tissue Committee report. Bruiser decided to give Rudy another chance. Rudy didn’t beat around the bush, and immediately after entering the conference room, he fired one question after another at Manfred. From repeatedly trying to make him admit the exact date and the last time he had a conversation with Jackie before firing her on 9th September. Rudy asked Manfred why he fired Melvin and Jackie, and the answer was routine layoffs. Rudy pointed out that the layoffs ended a year earlier, and it just didn’t make sense to fire Jackie, who was one of the top nurses at the hospital. Manfred stated that Jackie had violated HIPAA 15 times, and that was why they terminated her contract. Rudy went ahead and asked if stock options were part of Manfred’s compensation package. He responded in affirmation. Rudy added that since 2013, and for 41 quarters, he’d never sold or traded the assets, but on 5th September, three days after his meeting with Jackie, he made the sudden decision of selling most of his stocks. Rudy warned him that he would likely end up in prison for insider trading and that’d be way worse than losing his job for admitting the life-altering conversation he had with Jackie. As soon as Rudy realized that he’d built tension, he grilled Bernie by stating that maybe Jackie had warned him about Melvin and that he ‘knowingly and willfully’ was responsible for Donny Ray Black’s death.
In the end, Rudy finally got Bernie caught in his web of questions, and Bernie Manfred admitted that the Tissue Committee didn’t find any evidence against Melvin Pritcher. The minute Manfred mentioned the Tissue Committee, Rudy and his team celebrated. Now, the Tinley Britt firm had no option but to hand the Tissue Committee report to them because clearly it was relevant to the case. Leo blamed Brad Noonan for repeatedly stating his objection, because he believed it signalled to the other side that they were worried about where the argument was headed. Leo knew that they would lose the case once Bruiser and her team started to investigate the Tissue Committee report. Perhaps now he’ll regret not agreeing to Bruiser’s settlement deal!
Will Sarah switch teams?
Sarah was living the life she’d always dreamt of. She was an associate at a reputable firm, she traveled to London for work, her mentor bought her every luxury item she could think of just because she’d nailed a court hearing, and she felt seen and appreciated by her team, especially Leo. During their quick London visit, Sarah developed an intimate relationship with Brad, though he was quick to state the next morning that it could be a one-time thing if she wanted, because he didn’t wish for things to get awkward between them. Sarah wasn’t in love with Brad, but she appreciated his presence; he was quite unlike Rudy, and that was both a positive and negative attribute for Sarah. She gradually suspected that there was something incriminating in the Tissue Committee report, considering how desperately they were trying to protect it. She tried to access the file, but wasn’t allowed to do so. Sarah sensed she was on the wrong side of things, but will she choose to resign from her job and support Rudy? That might be a little far-fetched. Meanwhile, as soon as Rudy, Bruiser, and Deck got their hands on the Tissue Committee report, they learned that Jackie hadn’t just raised the alarm on Donny Ray’s case; she suspected a pattern, and considering that she apparently had 15 HIPAA violations, they suspected that she raised concern 15 times, which meant that Donny Ray was one among Melvin’s 15 victims, suggesting that their serial killer theory had some merit to it. They needed to find Jackie Lemancyzk immediately to gather more evidence, but we know that Melvin had held her hostage, so if they wanted to find Jackie, they would also have to face Melvin in the process.
