As was expected, the new episode of The Rainmaker establishes the connection between Leo and the Rosalie Sutton case. We also get a clear idea of where Jocelyn stands, and thankfully she is dedicated towards serving justice. Rudy gradually starts to join the dots and realizes that they have just discovered the tip of the iceberg, and there’s a lot more to the conspiracy than they’d assumed at first. While Rudy continues to be the hot-headed young lawyer, Deck is the only one who can talk sense to him and continues to keep him in check. Rudy knew that Jackie was their last resort, and he desperately tries to find her in episode 8 of The Rainmaker.
Spoiler Alert
What was Leo’s connection to the Rosalie Sutton case?
J. Lyman’s loyalty towards Leo pointed to the fact that they had a past connection. He was put behind bars for the disappearance of Rosalie Sutton, who turned out to be a whistleblower at a fertilizer company. Presumably, Leo represented the company, and he’d convinced Lyman to ensure that Rosalie was sent abroad before she could give testimony. Maybe Rosalie had assumed Lyman was a good man who wanted to save her from those who wanted her dead. But in reality, he had struck a deal with Leo, and who knows, maybe it was Prince who’d killed Rosalie! As soon as Lyman was released from prison, he tried to establish his authority over Jocelyn. He made it very clear that every decision that the firm took had to be sanctioned by him. He suggested Jocelyn agree to a hefty compensation and convince her client to accept it. He didn’t think they had a chance to win the case, but considering how desperately Leo and his team wanted to wrap it up, it was obvious that the company wanted to silence Dot Black at any cost. Lyman suggested exploiting Leo and his team to get the best bargain. Jocelyn was displeased when she discovered that her father had already set up a meeting with Leo. He’d convinced Keely to pay a million dollars to shut down the case, but Jocelyn wasn’t ready to accept the deal. She knew Dot wanted justice and not money, so there was no way she would strike a deal without consulting Dot. Lyman thought it was a silly move, and that she was making a terrible mistake, but Jocelyn didn’t care to win her father’s approval. She knew that her father wasn’t a good person, and he would agree to anything for a price. She had tried to be as materialistic as her father, but after the Donny Black case, something changed in her. She wanted to be on the right side, even if it meant disappointing her father.
What was Brad’s intention with Sarah?
Brad was offended when Leo announced that Sarah would be handling the trial preparation. He evidently felt humiliated, because trial preparation always used to be his responsibility. Leo explained that Keely had requested Sarah, and he also believed that she was ready for the task. Leo was clearly not happy with how everything went during the last deposition, and perhaps he thought that Brad hadn’t prepared the witness (Bernie Manfred) well enough to tackle the questions. Sarah tried to speak on Brad’s behalf, but Leo didn’t pay any heed to it. Sarah apologized to Brad as soon as they left the meeting. But Brad didn’t seem too bothered, and even offered to help Sarah with the preparation. Sarah was pleasantly surprised. They met that night at her apartment. They paired the trial preparation with wine, and gradually their conversation took a personal turn. Brad wondered why Sarah never tried to meet him personally after their brief fling in London. Sarah didn’t think sleeping with her boss was a terrific career move, so Brad pointed out that she must be honest to her desire instead of focusing only on ambition. Sarah and Brad got physically intimate, and while it was all romantic at first, it soon took an abusive turn. Brad almost choked Sarah, and his eyes reflected his evil intentions. Sarah couldn’t hold back her tears and asked Brad to leave. The next morning, Brad tried to act as if nothing had happened between them, but Sarah ignored him. Brad soon made it very evident that whatever he did the previous night was very intentional. He wanted to punish Sarah, and at her most vulnerable, he subjected her to humiliation. Brad established that they were not the same; he’d been in the game for a long, long time, and he didn’t even consider Sarah a worthy competitor. He believed she had no idea about the case, and one day when she realized what it would actually take to win Leo’s affection, she would walk away.
Later that day, Sarah met Keely. He advised her to leave the case and the firm, because he didn’t want her to be corrupt like the rest of them. He had grown fond of her, and he wanted the best for Sarah. He knew he had to face the repercussions of his wrong decisions, but he believed Sarah should not be stuck defending them. Sarah refused to run away; instead, she took it up as a challenge that she had to win. She wanted to prove to Keely that she was capable of handling complex cases and that, no matter what, she would always believe in him. Sarah’s determination convinced Keely that maybe they still stood a chance.
What happened to Jackie Lemancyzk?
Melvin had locked Jackie up in a storage unit. Rudy and Deck followed Melvin from the court to the storage site. While Deck suggested they wait in the car and keep an eye on Melvin, Rudy decided to follow Melvin into the building. Meanwhile, Jane Allen, the private investigator who was recently fired by Tinley Britt, decided to help Jackie. She believed she owed it to her after she helped her escape from Melvin. Jane was no longer working on the case, but she knew that Jackie needed help, and just like Rudy, she too perhaps followed Melvin and found his secret spot. Rudy and Deck followed the loud noise they heard, and they were surprised to see Prince with Melvin. He had a gun in his hand, and it looked like he was ready to shoot the man dead. Melvin insinuated that Prince was responsible for setting fire to his house, and when Deck realized that Rudy was getting too worked up about Melvin, he reminded Rudy that they must focus on finding Jackie. While they found the storage unit where Jackie had been held captive, she was gone. Later, Rudy tried to think from Jackie’s perspective, and he realized that maybe after being set free, she would have likely visited Charlie’s wife, Amber, who was admitted to the hospital. Jackie felt guilty for Amber’s condition, so she wanted to check on her before going into hiding.
Towards the end of The Rainmaker episode 8, Rudy finally crossed paths with Jackie. Although she had her face covered, he recognized her when he saw her at Amber’s room. When Rudy called her name, Jackie attempted to run away. Rudy begged her to stop and told her that he represented Donny Ray Black’s mother and he believed her. He hoped she could help them, but she was too afraid. Jackie chose to leave, but who knows? Maybe after a couple of days she’ll have a change of heart.
Why did Rudy resign?
Jocelyn knew that Leo would use her past connection with Rosalie Sutton to blackmail her. She had sheltered Rosalie at her house for a couple of days before she moved to Canada. She’d held her baby, and the ending of episode 8 of The Rainmaker also confirms that Jocelyn had helped Rosalie leave her child with her sister. She hoped that as soon as she settled down, she would take her daughter with her, but unfortunately that day never came. Since Jocelyn could be framed as an accomplice to the murder, she was afraid that it would be used against her. She came clean to Rudy and Deck, and during the ending of episode 8, when Lyman announced that he’d already struck a deal with Leo because he was the head of the legal firm and not Jocelyn, Rudy decided to resign. Rudy had figured that something like this was bound to happen, so he’d already had a word with Dot. Rudy announced that Dot Black had fired them and had signed with Rudy. He handed his resignation letter to Jocelyn, and she was glad that he was ready to take on the case solo. She insisted Deck join Rudy, because it was obvious that he too was invested in the case. Jocelyn fired Deck, and he happily joined Rudy. Considering how desperate Leo and Keely were to dissolve the case, they would put immense pressure on Rudy to give up. The only person who can help Rudy win the case is Jackie, and we can only hope that she’ll eventually decide to take the chance and do the right thing. We don’t know yet if Prince had murdered Melvin. Considering how sly Melvin is, I’ve a feeling he somehow managed to escape, or perhaps he was held captive and will be set free after the case dies down.
