‘The Royals’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is The Fundraiser Successful?

Published

The Royals’ ending leaves us doubting whether Aviraaj and Sophia are going to remain a couple or not. The Netflix show follows Sophia, a young female CEO who loses control of her company, WorkPotato, when her board kicks her out. On the other hand, we have Aviraaj, who learns he’s supposed to be the king of Morpur, but he continues to run away from his problems until he meets Sophia. Sophia and Aviraaj’s on-and-off relationship might be at the heart of the show, but do their responsibilities hinder the relationship gravely? Nearing the end of the show, they’re both lost because Sophia loses her company and her position as CEO, whereas Aviraaj ends up riddled with guilt for never trying to understand his gay father and believing his father ruined his mother’s life. In the final episode, Aviraaj and Sophia come together to stand up against those who want to bring them down. But what changes? And why does everything seem slightly flaky in the final few minutes of the show?

Spoiler Alert

Is Maurice A Bad Guy?

Despite some setbacks during Aviraaj’s coronation ceremony, Aviraaj is able to successfully fulfill his duties thanks to Sophia pushing him to be crowned on the launch of the B&B and her parents’ death anniversary. But at this time, Aviraaj still doesn’t know the whole truth about his lineage. In the final episode, Sophia plans a fundraiser for the palace because Zubin has sued the family for cancelling the contract with WorkPotato, and they’re already in debt. In doing the fundraiser, Sophia hopes to win over her board and take back her company (I wish it were that easy in real life). For the fundraiser, the family plans on auctioning off their prized possessions and couture designed by the popular designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The couple also decide they will focus on work until the fundraiser is over before getting all touchy-feely again.

Another problem for Aviraaj and his siblings is that their father wrote in his will that all his assets would go to his lover, Maurice. I mean, sure, you want to give your lover something, but you’re going to leave your children in debt? Anyway, Aviraaj’s mum, Padmaja, tries to convince Maurice to give her the assets back, but it’s all in vain. To be fair, she’s more in defense mode than please-save-us mode, so he doesn’t seem to be interested at all. However, when Maurice comes to the fundraiser, something changes in him. Maybe he realizes he wants to help his one true love’s family. He’s also thrilled at the sight of the restored palace, which has been preserved just the way the king liked it. Padmaja worries that the book Maurice has written will ruin the family, so she decides to tell Aviraaj that she knew about his father’s sexuality and lover. This is, of course, too much for Aviraaj to handle, because he continued to stay away from home, thinking his dad ruined their family when he asked for a separation. But now he realizes his dad was only suffocated in the many beautiful walls of Motibagh.

Maurice promises two things: he offers the trust fund back to Aviraaj so he can save Motibagh, and he promises Aviraaj’s mum that he will not write about the children. The only problem is, Padmaja has other enemies, and even though her mother-in-law continues to tell her to just have fun and enjoy her life because she’s only a widow and not dead, she ends up in big trouble instead, but we’ll get to that in a bit. However, one thing is clear: Maurice isn’t the one who leaks the information, he seems to be a good person who only cares about his “Pickles” life.

Is The Fundraiser Successful?

The fashion show displays some special couture pieces worn by the royal family and even some of the people who work for them. But Jinnie is struggling with her own issues, i.e., the palace her dad left her, which is completely derelict. This leaves her quite heartbroken, and she decides not to participate in the fundraiser because she feels neglected by her family. She goes to Ayesha Dondhi to figure out what to do, and Ayesha suggests she sue her siblings or get married. I would only hope Jinnie doesn’t choose the latter. So, of course, Sophia has to step in as a model too, leaving everyone stunned in her bridal outfit.

It’s after the fundraiser that Aviraaj realizes that it was no fault of his mum’s for keeping his dad’s secret, because that’s what he wanted. He was simply projecting blame onto whoever was available. The fundraiser is successful, and a lot of pieces get auctioned off. Finally, Aviraaj and Sophia can properly be together as well. I suppose the one thing Padmaja wants to tell her kids is that she’s now going to branch out independently and do something for herself, but they’re not really interested in listening because they’ve each got their own thing to do. Aviraaj has the press conference, Diggy has a plane to catch for “Gastronautics,” and Jinnie has to head out to meet Ayesha to figure out what to do about Sheet Mahal.

But, in The Royals’ ending, during the press conference, it comes out that Aviraaj is Padmaja’s illegitimate child, all thanks to Dhondi. But wait, if he’s the father, why were they pushing Aviraaj and Ayesha to get together (yikes!)? Guess that mystery is yet to be solved. On the other hand, though Zubin apologizes for basically being a prick, Sophia is meant to start a company with Aviraaj, but with this information out, will that be possible? Though it seems like they’re holding strong because Sophia walks Aviraaj out of the conference, protecting him and holding his hand the whole way, when they get out of there, he lets her go and walks into the palace alone. I really hope it’s not a repeat of the whole thing again, where he’s like, “I’m a brooding man whose entire life has been a lie,” and she goes, “It’s okay, I will save you.” I do hope Aviraaj gets his act together and simply asks his mom for the truth.

It looks like the entire family splits up at the end of the season, leaving us wondering if Motibagh has really been saved or not. Additionally, Sophia’s volatile situation might send her back to Zubin because Aviraaj may never recover from this painful news. On the other hand, will Jinnie come for the throne because of the whole “illegitimate” child thing? It would be quite odd to villainize her, though, because we know already that the siblings love each other. However, the whole Sheet Mahal situation has opened her eyes. Meanwhile, Digvijay will be on an international platform, getting more attention than needed if he continues to participate in Gastronautics. So I wonder if he’ll leave this fantastic opportunity behind and return to a lost kingdom.
