‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Did Belinda Recognize Greg?

Published

The internet is already going gaga over the incest angle, and Lochlan staring at Saxon’s naked behind, long enough to make one feel uncomfortable, will surely give birth to more Reddit threads! In the second episode of The White Lotus season 3, the coat of pretense is peeling away when it comes to the longtime best friends, Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn, staying at the resort. As much as they claimed to adore one another, a constant hint of jealousy and friction comes through. After receiving the call from the journalist, Timothy struggled not to think of the worst. He was in trouble but was too afraid to tell the truth to his family. Meanwhile, Rick was determined to travel to Bangkok, and his girlfriend, Chelsea, was not happy about it. What was Rick hiding? Let’s get into the details of season 2 episode 2.

Spoiler Alert

What is up with the three best friends?

Where do we draw the line when we gossip? Or is there ever a line? Is it human nature to speak behind a friend’s back when confrontation is not an option? The nature of Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn’s friendship will leave you with too many questions on your plate. They’d grown up together and seen each other’s good and bad days, but as they grew older, they preferred hiding the uncomfortable truths. Giving half-hearted compliments was easier than being honest about their feelings, and perhaps they’d realized that was the only way they could remain friends forever.

Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn barely met in their day-to-day lives, and it had been four years since Laurie had met Jaclyn. Their friendship was pretty much confined to text messages and the occasional phone call, and pretending from a distance was always easy. The minute Laurie left the room on their first night at the resort, Kate and Jaclyn gossiped about her. To keep their consciences clear, they always added how deeply they loved and admired Laurie before dissecting her personal life. Kate and Jaclyn discussed in detail Laurie’s messy divorce and her not getting a promotion at her job even after dedicating her life to the firm. Kate added that Laurie’s daughter, Ellie, was struggling with her mental health due to the divorce. She’d been expelled from two schools after she physically assaulted her classmates, and Kate believed it was all because Laurie had decided to raise Ellie in New York. According to Kate, it just wasn’t the right city to raise a young kid, and they wondered if Laurie’s job was even worth the sacrifices she was making. Jaclyn pointed out Laurie’s drinking problem, and they agreed that her life was pretty much falling apart. Their conversation paused the moment Laurie entered the room, and once again the exchange of fake compliments began. But Laurie was not the only victim of such brutal dissection; Kate and Laurie indulged in some unhealthy gossip about Jaclyn later that night.

Jaclyn was a little bothered when her biomarker test results were the same as Laurie’s. She secretly believed she had worked harder than her friends to be in her best shape, and she could not fathom how Laurie got the same compliments that she did. Meanwhile, when Kate stated how her result was not the best, Jaclyn commented how it might be because the food in Austin was fattier. Kate immediately got defensive, and stated that Austin had healthy food options as well. She could sense from Jaclyn’s tone that she looked down on her because she did not think Texas was good enough. Kate was made to feel inferior, and she tried her best to prove that her life in Austin was perfect.

Jaclyn had recently married an actor ten years younger than her. She added how she and Harrison were addicted to each other and that she would never get tired of him; Kate and Laurie put some forced smiles on, thinking how ridiculous her claim was, especially because it had been only a year since they got married. Kate had been married for quite some time, and she knew marriage was no bed of roses. Laurie’s experience was far worse, and she thought it was obvious that Jaclyn was portraying a happy picture while her reality was quite different. They thought she was just a narcissist obsessed with showing off a picture-perfect life. When Jaclyn woke up from sleep, she overheard the girls talk, but she chose to stay in her room, and she went back to sleep. We don’t know if Jaclyn actually heard what they were saying, but even if she did, she would perhaps deny rather than accept that her friends thought she was a flawed human being.

Who was behind the robbery at the hotel?

Chelsea and her new friend, Chloe, went out shopping at the store in the resort. The girls’ day out turned into a disaster when a masked man entered the shop. He had a gun in his hand and demanded the salesgirl hand him the jewelry. When she did not comply, he grabbed whatever he could lay his hands on and left. Gaitok, the security guard, tried to get hold of him, but he managed to escape. The burglar did not operate alone; he was part of a gang, and it looked like the health mentor, Valentin, might be linked somehow. He intentionally got Gaitok so entangled in conversation that the security guard failed to stop the racing car from entering the resort. Valentin was not a local; he was an East European immigrant, and it would not be a stretch to think he might have a criminal background. Gaitok was madly in love with Mook, and he was proud that his tale of bravery had traveled to her. He’d always wanted to prove that he was strong and brave and that he would manage to provide for Mook if she ever considered his proposal. The robbery helped his case because Mook was clearly impressed!

Did Belinda recognize Greg?

Chelsea convinced Rick to hang out with her new friend and her partner. She believed he would love Chloe’s boyfriend because he too was old and rich, just like him (love Chelsea’s honesty!). Neither Greg nor Rick was happy to be sharing the same table, simply because they were not in Thailand to make friends, and couldn’t care less about another old white fellow with money. But they didn’t have much of a choice because of their partners. Chloe and Chelsea had become great friends, and having dinner together with their partners just made sense. Both Greg and Rick had shady pasts, and while their girlfriends expected them to get busy discussing business, they could not speak much about the skeletons in their closets.

Apart from the audience, who already know about Greg’s secrets too well, there is someone at the resort who seems to recognize him. Belinda had been a witness to Tanya and Greg’s passionate romance in season one, and how could she forget the man who distracted her investor, leaving her dream of opening her own luxury spa unfulfilled. But will Belinda confront Greg? Will she ever try to find out what happened to Tanya? Things have already started cooking in episode 2 of The White Lotus. After Chelsea and Rick returned to their room, Rick concluded that Chloe and Greg’s relationship was not like theirs. They were in love (even though money might have been a great instigator), but Rick was convinced Chloe was a sex worker, and like MANY rich white men in Thailand, Greg was paying her to be with him. Well, that might as well be true! Greg had the money, but after killing his wife, he surely did not have peace of mind, and he perhaps chose a young woman to keep him distracted.

What was Rick planning?

Chelsea had booked a stress management session for Rick. While he had no intention of attending it, his girlfriend somehow convinced him. Dr. Amrita tried to understand her client, and she was surprised to find that Rick always felt stressed and relied on weed to calm his nerves. Amrita asked Rick to remember a time in his life when he was completely stress-free. Rick stated that his father was murdered before he was born, and his mother, who was a drug addict, left him when he was ten, and that all his life he had to fend for himself. He made sure he never got attached to anything in his life because he believed there was no expectation from a man who had nothing to lose, nothing to care about, and nothing to fear. This episode confirms that Sritala’s husband was not Rick’s father, but then why was he so obsessed with finding the man? Was it affection or revenge? By the end of the second episode, Rick made up his mind to travel to Bangkok, and it seems we will also get to see the bustling city thanks to Rick and his plan!

How much trouble is Timothy in?

It became pretty evident that Timothy was in trouble when he received the call from the journalist in episode one. He could barely sleep thinking about the worst that could happen to him and his family, and the fact that he was stuck in Thailand, a different time zone altogether, did not help his case. His family could sense that he was tense, but he preferred not to share any details. He kept on checking his phone, hoping to get an update about the situation. His personal assistant informed him that someone from The Washington Post had tried to contact him, which suggested that the situation had gotten worse than he had imagined. Timothy desperately needed to hear back from Kenny, and towards the end of The White Lotus episode 2, he finally did. He learned from Kenny that more than the story that was about to be published in The Wall Street Journal, he was concerned about the fact that twenty agents had raided his office. This was more than just his reputation; his business was doomed, and he could end up going to prison. As it turned out, a whistleblower in his office had ratted him out to the FBI, and everything related to his business was on the radar.

Timothy was furious when Kenny added that the documents he possessed implicated Timothy and that he must get a lawyer immediately. Timothy had invested in a bogus scheme as a favor to Kenny, and now he was doomed because of it. Timothy had always wanted to be an inspirational figure in the lives of his children; he tried to be a perfect father and a caring husband, but this one miscalculation was about to take everything away from him. Would he tell his family the truth and accept that it was all over for him? Or will he be inspired by all the shady businessmen around him and end up becoming a fugitive? Either way, his reputation will be scarred forever, and his family will possibly lose their respect for him.
