‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Will Chelsea Cheat On Rick?

Published

The guests at the luxury resort are finally coming out of their shells, and they want to party hard! The White Lotus season 3 episode 5 is all about letting go—of your moral compass and your inhibitions. Thailand and nightlife (at least for tourists) go hand in hand, and when the three American ladies declared they wanted to have the time of their lives, their health mentor, Valentin, did not disappoint. Lochlan had learned some moves from his brother and was ready for a night of adventure. A full moon party awaited them. Will Lochlan’s subconscious sexual attraction towards his brother surface after some booze and drugs? That is surely up for speculation. Meanwhile, Timothy intends to kill himself, but is death really the answer to all his troubles? Let’s take a close look at all the important details of the latest episode.

Spoiler Alert

Did Timothy pull the trigger?

Timothy thought dying was the only honorable option left to him. His family would be devastated, but he believed it was better than admitting that he had failed as a husband and a father. While he tried to make peace with his reality, his daughter, Piper, declared that she would be moving out of the United States and spending the next year at a monastery on Koh Samui. She explained that was the reason why she’d insisted her family plan a trip to Thailand. After seeing the meditation hall at the monastery, Piper was convinced that she was taking the right decision. As a Buddhist, she believed she needed to immerse herself in the practice and find her true calling. Victoria disapproved of Piper’s decision. Not that she was a conservative Christian, but she’d always considered Piper’s interest in Buddhism a phase that would eventually pass, after which she would settle back into her Western lifestyle. One of the funniest moments in this week’s episode was when Victoria exclaimed that Piper must not move to Taiwan (she had for a second forgotten that it was Thailand and not Taiwan). Her reaction underlines how a typical Westerner looks at East Asia. Piper was adamant about her decision. She had made up her mind, and she decided to take her parents to the monastery and introduce them to the head monk, Luang Por Teera.

Victoria was convinced it was a cult, and by the time her daughter would be disillusioned, it would be too late. Piper didn’t pay heed to her mother’s opinion; she knew this was the path for her, and she was ready to go to extremes to experience a sense of clarity in life. Victoria was concerned about their reputation; after all, the daughter of a successful businessman converting to Buddhism and moving to Thailand was not exactly good news. But she had no idea that the reputation she wanted to protect was already in ruins. Timothy couldn’t care less about Piper’s plans. He was caught up in his thoughts, and his daughter’s decision to move to Thailand was the least of his worries compared to what he was dealing with.

Meanwhile, Gaitok had figured out that Timothy had stolen his gun, thanks to the surveillance footage he’d accessed. He confronted Timothy, but he denied having the gun. Gaitok couldn’t forcefully search his belongings; after all, he was a guest at the hotel, and there were some boundaries he was not allowed to cross. Gaitok chose a sleepless night over losing his job for harassing a guest at the hotel. At night, Timothy wrote a note for his family and had his finger on the trigger when Victoria suddenly entered the room. She could sense that something was troubling Timothy, and she tried to cheer him up. Timothy complained about all his mounting responsibilities and how tired he was with people’s expectations from him. Victoria was a little puzzled; she didn’t know why her husband was complaining all of a sudden, but she strongly believed whatever trouble Timothy was dealing with, he would eventually resolve it. At the end of The White Lotus episode 5, we see a glimpse of the altar boy that Timothy once was. He prayed to the Almighty, asking for some direction in life. Well, he sure needed some help from above!

Why was Kate traumatized?

As a middle-aged, right-wing good Christian, Kate was traumatized seeing her friends get a little dirty with men they barely knew. But she also believed she was progressive, so she could not express her disapproval aggressively. She was initially onboard; having a few drinks and hitting the dance floor was what she had in mind, but clearly Jaclyn and Laurie got carried away. They finally had the chance to let down their hair, and they didn’t want to miss the opportunity to live a little instead of thinking if it was morally right or wrong. The lighting and the background score provoke one to wonder why the idea of ‘fun’ is limited to booze and sex. Maybe after days of pretense and repression, ‘fun’ is the only excuse one can come up with to let loose the reins of their subconscious desires.

Both Laurie and Jaclyn were dealing with their demons. Laurie was a single mother who was struggling to find a balance in her personal and professional life, while Jaclyn was haunted by the idea of becoming old and irrelevant, and not to forget, her marriage was possibly in shambles. Having a young husband made her feel good about herself, but with him drifting away, she wondered if she was still in her element. Jaclyn cherished the envious looks on the faces of a group of young girls at the club when they saw her dancing with Valentin and his friends. She still had what it took to steal one’s boyfriend, and she was quite proud of it.

Having three young men to cater to their whims and fancies was exactly what they were looking for, but Kate was not really on the same page. Most of the scenes are explored from Kate’s perspective to give us a sense of her moral dilemma. What she thought would be a mildly adventurous evening turned into a wild, wild night with Laurie and Jaclyn inviting the boys to their villa. In almost every girls’ night adventure, there is someone who volunteers to be the big sister who makes sure everyone gets home safely. They are usually the ones who buy into the idea of a fun night, but they also want to play it safe; they’re terrified of truly letting loose and waking up with a hangover and embarrassing memories. Kate carried her responsibilities quite well. She brought the girls back to the villa, but she didn’t expect the men to tag along. She watched Jaclyn and Laurie strip and grind in the pool, and she probably judged them a lot. Kate was relieved when the night finally came to an end, and Valentin and his friends left their villa. She could finally sleep peacefully!

Will Laurie and Jaclyn get into a fight?

The twist comes at the very end of episode 5 of The White Lotus, where we watch Valentin sneakily enter Jaclyn’s room. Jaclyn had been insisting Laurie sleep with Valentin. But secretly, she had been eyeing him for far too long. She was trying to live through Laurie and to experience a sense of validation, she didn’t mind stealing the man she had been asking her friend to hook up with. Laurie was all about having the time of her life, and she was too drunk to make an after-party plan with Valentin. While Laurie was fast asleep, Jaclyn texted Valentin, and she invited him to her room.

If the truth surfaces, it can result in conflict between Laurie and Jaclyn, because let’s face it, the feud will not be about Valentin; he was the least of their problems. It will be about dishonoring certain unspoken rules in friendship. It also proved how calculative and envious Jaclyn had always been, and Laurie might not take it well. Or, Laurie might choose to let the issue slide because it was too silly and trivial to address even though there’s a deeper insecurity at play. Considering this is The White Lotus, the chances of an outburst are far higher!

Is Belinda in love?

The fear of death and the possibility of romance are playing side-by-side in Belinda’s life. The minute she realized that Greg was indeed Tanya’s husband and that he was the prime suspect in her murder case, she knew she was in trouble. She had confronted Greg in episode 3, which meant that Greg was now aware that there was someone in Thailand who knew about him and Tanya and could possibly call the cops on him. As brave as she was, facing a murderer was not what she had in mind when she traveled to Thailand. She tried to tip people off about the situation and told Fabian, the general manager of the hotel, everything she had found about Greg on the internet. She was terrified when Fabian had mentioned that Greg had been asking about her, and she’d assumed that if she told that Greg was a potential murderer, he would take her concern seriously. But Fabian seemed confused, and he decided it was best not to dig into the past of their guests. Most of the guests at the luxury resort had a colorful past, and they tried their best to ensure that they didn’t judge them based on their past. As long as they paid for the service and didn’t create any ruckus, Fabian felt there was no need to panic.

Belinda did not know what to do, and she sought comfort from Pornchai. Pornchai promised to ensure Belinda’s safety, and while there had been sparks between the two, they finally addressed their feelings in the latest episode. Belinda was scared; she was convinced that Greg was after her and would possibly attempt to murder her. She could not imagine sleeping all alone in her room, so she requested Pornchai to stay back. Pornchai obliged, and while the night started on an awkward note, the lovebirds ended up spending a romantic, cozy night together. To Belinda’s surprise, her son walked in on her and Pornchai the next morning. He was supposed to stay with his mother for the rest of her Thailand trip, and Zion was glad to see that her mother had already made a friend.

Will Chelsea Cheat On Rick?

After Rick left for Bangkok, Chelsea joined Chloe and the brothers, Lochlan and Saxon, to attend the full moon party. She could not stop worrying about Rick, and she decided to call him and find out if he was okay. Rick didn’t receive her call. He was busy catching up with an old friend who’d procured him a gun with which to carry out his plan. Rick didn’t expect to find out that his friend had converted to Buddhism and was trying to stay sober and celibate to find a meaning to his existence. The conversation between the two friends was absurd and hilarious. Even though Rick didn’t elaborate on his plan, he probably has every intention of using the gun on Jim Hollinger. Meanwhile, Saxon had his eyes on Chelsea. He spoke like a typical brat, stating that he wanted to sleep with the girl who was the most difficult to impress. Well, Chelsea was still unimpressed. But moving on, Chloe offered Chelsea, Saxon, and Lochlan pills to make the night more memorable. Lochlan was the easiest to convince; the alcohol helped boost his confidence, and he was determined to prove to Saxon that he too could be the most fun person at a party. Saxon wanted to be the one in control, and seeing Lochlan gulp down a pill even though he’d warned him about it left him a little concerned. After everyone took a pill, Saxon decided to join the party as well; he would rather not be the only one left out. Saxon knew he would not be in his element with a psychedelic drug in his system, and he was right. He was dazed and confused. Even though Chloe was worried that Greg would probably kill her if he found out that she’d cheated on him, she wanted to take the risk. She had a thing for innocent young men, and she was instantly attracted to Lochlan. She had made up her mind to sleep with him, and she insisted that Chelsea let loose as well. While Rick had his flaws, Chelsea loved him, and cheating on him might not be what she had in mind. But you never know; a game of dare can change everything. Chelsea and Saxon together might not be a vision to behold, but who are we to judge! Lochlan is surely in for a fun time, but will he ever get over his attraction towards Saxon, especially when he was drunk? Well, we have to wait for the next episode to find out.
