Amazon Prime’s latest action-comedy film, The Wrecking Crew, starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, is about two estranged brothers trying to solve the mystery behind their father’s death. James was told that his father had died in a hit-and-run case, and he seemed pretty unaffected by the news. It is evident that he wasn’t close to his father, and his wife, Leila, was a little concerned about his indifference. She insisted that he pass the news on to his half-brother, Jonny. Since James and Jonny were not on talking terms, Leila called up Jonny. She encouraged him to come to Hawaii to attend his father’s funeral, but he wasn’t interested. But he had a change of heart as soon as a couple of yakuza men showed up at his place. They demanded he hand over his father’s parcel, but Jonny didn’t know what they were talking about. He ended up killing the men, and the next morning, he was on his way to Hawaii, determined to find out what the yakuza wanted from his father.
Spoiler Alert
Why did Jonny and James grow distant?
Jonny and James were quite the opposite of each other. While Jonny was a disorderly suspended cop with a pending investigation whose romantic life was also a mess, James was a disciplined Navy SEAL with a loving wife and two children. From the get-go, it’s quite clear that James and Jonny had a past feud that they refused to move on from. Although James at first didn’t believe that their father’s death was a murder, when he checked out the surveillance footage, which showed his father clearly being intentionally run over by a van, he realized that Jonny was right. Their approaches were different, but the brothers had the same purpose, to find Walter’s killer and solve the mystery behind his death. During their investigation, the brothers were forced to address their past. Jonny’s mother was murdered when he was quite young, and he’d made it his life’s purpose to find her killer, but he had failed to do so, and he detested James because when he needed his brother the most, he didn’t help. After Jonny was arrested for forcefully entering the property of one of the suspects in his father’s case, he was put behind bars, and James bailed him out. Immediately after being released from jail, Jonny attacked James, and the two got into a physical fight. This was perhaps long overdue, since Jonny always thought James didn’t do enough for him. Jonny finally addressed what had been bothering him for years. He asked James why he’d abandoned him when he needed him the most. James reasoned that he’d sent Jonny to prison to protect him. The K-syndicate that operated on the island would’ve killed Jonny, since he’d come to believe that they were responsible for his mother’s death and he’d become a bother for the gang. Jonny expressed how helpless he’d felt at the time; he regretted not being able to protect his mother and the sight of her dead body lying on the street with her eyes staring up at him continued to haunt Jonny. James admitted that he’d messed up, he should’ve done better, and he could’ve. If he could go back in time, he would have tried to be a better brother to Jonny. He apologized to his little brother, and finally they felt they were ready to move on. Although Walter hadn’t been a good father to James and Jonny, they figured they were the only ones who could bring his killer to justice, so they might as well do their best to find the truth.
Why was Walter murdered?
Walter was a private detective, and when Jonny went to search his apartment, he came across Pika, his assistant. His job involved hacking emails, tapping phones, and taking compromising pictures that Walter could use to blackmail. Lately, Pika had been asked to get a job at a high-end catering company, and Jonny suspected that the company might be connected with his father’s killer(s). He’d also discovered a blueprint with a government seal at Walter’s apartment. He asked his cousin, Haunani, who was assistant to the governor, Peter Mahoe, if she could help understand what the blueprint was about. She accessed the government database and discovered that the blueprint was commissioned by the Robichaux farm for a property on the east side of the island. According to Haunani, Marcus Robichaux was a non-native developer who had projects (hotels and resorts) all across Asia and Europe. He also came from generational wealth, since his family had controlled the sugarcane industry on the island for generations. While Jonny and Haunani thought the blueprint was perhaps of a hotel, James pointed out that it was for a casino. Since gambling is illegal in Hawaii, they figured he must be involved in shady business. They decided to crash his fundraiser party, and that was where Jonny met Robichaux’s wife, Monica, who admitted that she’d hired Walter to look into her husband’s ‘activities’ to build her divorce case. Soon, Marcus had his men bring the gatecrashers, James and Jonny, to his office, and when they mentioned they were Walter’s sons, he looked a little concerned. He stated that he’d hired Walter, and that he had no idea that the old man had been killed. Jonny scoffed at his remark; he made it very clear that they suspected Marcus of killing their father. Marcus lied that he’d hired Walter to tail his wife, who he suspected of cheating on him. Jonny knew that the man was lying, and the next morning, when he found out that Monica had fallen off a building, he immediately knew that Marcus was responsible for her death. It was clear that Marcus was a dangerous man with immense influence and ties with the yakuza, and he’d also killed Walter. Jonny and James came to the conclusion that their father had been working for Monica, and while tailing her husband and his associates, he’d found out about his operations and his plan to build a casino.
Did the brothers kill Marcus Robichaux?
Jonny was pleasantly surprised when he received a call from his ex-girlfriend, Valentina. They’d recently broken up, mostly because Jonny was an absent partner and Valentina refused to put up with him anymore. After she left, Jonny realized that he should’ve tried to be there for her, and as soon as he received her call, he tried to convince her to patch up with him. Now, Valentina had no intention of rekindling her romance with Jonny; she’d stopped by his place to collect his mail, and she just wanted to inform him that he had a package and overdue bills. Jonny immediately realized that the package was ‘the package’ that his father had apparently mailed him, and that the yakuza had come searching for. He begged Valentina to come to Hawaii with the package, and while she refused to do so at first, Jonny somehow managed to convince her. The package held a flash drive that could be used to access a digitally encrypted cold wallet (it was basically the ‘key’ to the wallet), but they needed the seed phrase to get in. Jonny concluded that the government accountant had downloaded all the dirty transactions and helped Walter find incriminating evidence on Marcus (and Peter), and that was how he ended up with the drive. James had found a sheet of paper with a series of unrelated words in Walter’s belongings, and he’d kept it, and he figured this might actually be the seed phrase. Turns out, he was right, but as they were about to access the account, helicopters and cars carrying armed men showed up.
Someone had figured out that they had the drive, and they desperately wanted to stop the brothers. They heroically escaped from it all, and as soon as they managed to access the account, Veronica deduced that there had been several international wire transfers. According to the wire transfers, $12 million had been sent to the same account for three years. The money had gone through several offshore accounts, and it finally landed in a ‘Mahoe P.A.’ account in the Cayman Islands. Jonny and James figured that their governor, Peter Mahoe, was involved in it all. Peter had always pretended to care deeply about Jonny and James, and he had indirectly suggested Jonny step away from his father’s case, but it didn’t really work. They figured that Marcus was so desperate to build his casino on the island that he’d bought Peter for twelve million so that he would sanction every possible document that was needed to make gambling legal so he could finally start working on his casino resort on the Hawaiian Home Lands.
Now, Haunani had no clue that Peter was involved with Marcus, so she ended up sharing with him Marcus’ plan to build an illegal casino on the island. Peter figured he had to get rid of the entire family to bury the truth, and of course, he told Marcus about the situation they were in. Marcus had his men abduct Haunani and James’ wife, Leila. Jonny was devastated seeing James’ son repeatedly state how he’d failed to protect his mother, suggesting that he was reminded of his past and how he too had once felt the same way. Marcus had messed with the wrong people, because James and Jonny weren’t afraid; rather, they were determined to kill anyone who dared to stop them from rescuing Leila and Haunani. At the very end of “The Wrecking Crew,” Jonny and James break into Marcus’ property, commando style, and swiftly take down his men. Soon after killing the guards, the brothers had to deal with the yakuza, but they were unstoppable, and they successfully destroyed them as well. Their rescue mission was a success; Leila insisted James ensure that Marcus didn’t get away. Marcus was ready to leave on his boat when Jonny stopped him. He finally admitted to killing Walter, and he believed that men like Jonny didn’t have what it took to destroy him. While Marcus had overpowered Jonny and he was convinced that he could just shoot him, he had no idea what Jonny was about to pull.
During The Wrecking Crew’s ending, Jonny flaunted a grenade pin; as it turns out, he’d stolen the WWI grenade that Marcus had kept on display at his office, and that was how Marcus Robichaux died. Jonny fell into the sea, but James came to his rescue at the right time. After pulling him out of the water, James repeatedly stated, ‘I got you,’ suggesting that he wanted Jonny to know that even if he’d messed up years ago, he’d always deeply cared about him and he would always have his back.
Will Jonny avenge his mother?
The governor was arrested, and while he tried to explain that he was innocent and that Marcus had framed him, there was enough evidence to prove that he was deeply involved with the corrupt developer. It looks like Valentina and Jonny are pretty much back together, and Jonny has promised himself that this time he will be a better partner to her. Jonny had finally learned to make peace with the death of his mother and father. He’d realized that maybe his desperation to find his mother’s killer was his way of trying to hold on to her.
In The Wrecking Crew’s ending, Mr. K from the K Syndicate handed over a piece of paper that had the name of the person who’d killed Jonny’s mother. He wanted Jonny to know that his men were not involved in her death, and since the brothers had successfully gotten rid of the yakuza (men from his syndicate didn’t have to fight the yakuza as a result), he figured he might as well help Jonny. He rewarded Jonny with the answer he’d always been searching for. When Jonny told James about it, his brother reassured him that no matter what his decision would be, Jonny could count him in. At the very end, we find out that Jonny chose to burn the paper Mr. K had handed him. He’d finally made peace with the past, and he figured that he had to live in the present, and the only way to move on was by letting things go. He was in love, he’d reunited with his brother, and he was deeply attached to James’ family; seeking revenge meant risking the lives of his loved ones. Moreover, they now had access to the twelve million (wonder why the government didn’t freeze the account! Probably because it’s an action-comedy and logic is not supposed to be the strongest component) that they could use to live a better life, and Jonny chose a secure future over an uncertain one.
