‘Troll 2’ Movie Recap And Spoilers: Is Andreas Dead?

Published

Netflix’s Troll (part 1) told us how the army killed the mammoth creature and the kind of impact it had on the life of paleontologist Nora Tidemann. The woman wanted to save the troll, as she knew that it was not an evil creature. It was forced out of its own habitat by the humans, and its only problem was that it was never able to adapt to the changing times. Nora knew that it wasn’t the troll’s fault that the fanatics took it upon themselves to wipe their species off the face of the earth. We also saw that Nora always blamed her father for not being there for her when she was growing up, which was why, for the longest time, she didn’t talk to him. But while she was on her quest to find out about trolls, she took his help, as he was the one man who knew more about those mammoth creatures than anybody else. Tobias, her father, had always believed that the trolls existed in real life, but he was never able to get substantial evidence to prove his claims. Tobias lost his life, but before that happened, he managed to show the world that he was not a madman. In fact, the encounter he had with the troll during the military mission was one of the happiest days of his life. Major Kristoffer Holm blamed himself for his death, but Nora assured him that her father was the most satisfied man on that day, as he had fulfilled the mission of his life. Nora wanted to save the troll, but she couldn’t have her way. In Troll 2, she was once again contacted by Andreas Isaken, the assistant to the PM, as her expertise was needed for a secret state mission that was being carried out. So let’s find out what happened in Troll 2, and if Nora was able to overcome the obstacles that came her way.

Spoiler Alert

What happened at the Vemork Power Station?

One day, out of nowhere, Andreas Isaksen, who served as the PM’s advisor, arrived at Nora’s house in Steinbundalen. He told her that he needed her to accompany him to the Vemork Power Station, where a state held a secret that he wanted her to witness. He told her that it would pique her interest, and that she wouldn’t want to miss out on it for her life. Nora didn’t want to go at first, but then she changed her mind. Professors Moller and Wangel welcomed her at the power station and assured her that they would have a better time working together than last time. Nora met Marion Auryn Rhadami, the evolutionary biologist who was working on the secret project. Nora was shocked to find out that there was a mega troll being held captive in the facility. The troll was in hibernation for the longest time, and neither Marion nor any of the other scientists had any clue about how to wake it up from its slumber. Nora took the make-shift lift and went up to observe the troll from near. She placed her hands on its face, closed her eyes, and hummed a song. Suddenly the troll opened its eyes, and Nora had to rush down to save her life. The troll escaped the facility, and Nora felt that this one was a bit different from the troll she had encountered earlier. There seemed to be a lack of empathy in this mega troll, and the glare in his eyes made it clear that he sought revenge.

How did Nora find out about the son of the Mountain King?

Once the troll escaped, it didn’t lay low. In fact, it infiltrated the nearby areas and wreaked havoc on the citizens. Kristoffer was given orders to neutralize the threat, and Nora requested him to take her with him on the helicopter, which had huge UV ray panels installed on either side. Andreas and Marion also accompanied Kristoffer, as they also wanted to find out what was happening. Nora was shocked when she saw that the mega troll was eating humans alive. Nora knew that trolls were not inherently evil creatures, and so she didn’t understand what had happened to him. Kristoffer’s colleague and friend, Amir, died on the mission, and he felt guilty he couldn’t save his life. Though the troll walked off after causing destruction, Nora knew that they couldn’t stop him by military intervention. That’s when Nora took Andreas, Kristoffer, and Marion to the Dovre mountains. It was the same place where, years ago, a trap was laid for the Troll King during king Olaf’s rule. The Troll King’s son was abducted to lure him into the trap. The Troll King died, but the remains of his son were never found. That was because the son was still alive, and for centuries, he had been hiding in the Dovre mountains. The son who Nora called Beautiful never came out of hiding, but she knew that she would have to talk to him and request him to stand up against the mega troll. Nora seemed to share a cosmic connection with these creatures. Once Beautiful came out of hiding, she emerged again, placed her hands on his face, and hummed a song. The troll not only seemed to understand it, he also responded back by making a growling sound. She told Beautiful that he needed to confront the mega troll and ask him why he was causing such destruction. Beautiful did exactly that, but the meeting with the mega troll didn’t end well for him. The mega troll got angry and hit the ground so hard that the ice below Beautiful gave way and he fell into the freezing cold water. The mega troll then tried to kill Nora and the others, but they were able to make a near escape and save their lives.

Why did the mega troll want revenge on King Olaf?

It didn’t take long for Nora to figure out that the mega troll was going towards Trondheim, as he wanted to take revenge on King Olaf for massacring his species. Nora went to Trondheim, and she met a historian named Esther Johanne Tiller, who happened to be an expert in the field. The story went that Olaf’s remains were buried somewhere under the central cathedral, and Nora felt that the troll was after them. But the thing was, even after searching for years, Esther could never find his remains, and moreover, she didn’t understand why such a celebrated ruler needed to be buried beneath the church, and that too with so much secrecy. There was a huge mural of King Olaf in the basement of the cathedral, and something unprecedented happened to it when Andreas was observing it. A chunk of that wall painting fell to the ground, and Andreas felt that he had destroyed it. But that was not so. Esther and Nora found out that there were three holes in the wall painting, exactly at the same spots where Olaf had been stabbed during the battle of Stiklestad. They put iron rods in these holes, twisted them around, and came to the realization that there was a secret space behind it. There was a hidden spring there(referred to as Olaf’s spring), where the remains of the great king were still intact in the coffin. Nora noticed that there was a parchment in his pocket, and she came to realize that it was the other half of the Law of Troll decree that he had passed back in the day. One half of that document was preserved by the authorities, but they could never find the other half until that day. When both those pieces of paper were combined, it came to be known that the king never intended to exterminate the trolls. In fact, King Olaf wanted to give them a piece of land where they could exist peacefully. The church didn’t want that to happen, and so they had Olaf murdered and then went about killing the trolls. So the trolls believed that Olaf was responsible for the massacre, but that was not the truth. Now the mega troll was heading to Trondheim to take revenge for what had happened back in the day. He wanted to destroy the entire city and kill every human there.

How did Andreas stop the megatroll?

Nora felt that the officials of the church might have figured out a way to kill the trolls. She speculated that their swords were probably made of silver for that reason, but that was not the case. Suddenly, it struck her that probably it could be holy water that could cut through the hard exterior of the troll’s body. And she was right. She dipped her knife in holy water and then tried to cut through the stone that the troll was made of, and she achieved success. So it was decided that they would not abandon Trondheim and would together fight to protect their city. They weaponized the holy water from Olaf’s spring and put it in tanks with detonators attached to it. Once the mega troll arrived, Andreas and Esther rang the church bells, while Kristoffer, Nora, and others tried to stop the beast using holy water.

There was a twist when Beautiful made an emphatic arrival and attacked the mega troll, taking him by surprise. But even Beautiful was no match for the mega troll, and the latter was on a rampage. They realized that they would have to think outside the box, and that’s when Marion told Nora about how she believed that a troll could be killed if its heart was destroyed. It was the center of its power, but the problem was that nothing could penetrate its hard skin. So that’s when Andreas made the courageous call to put holy water inside the troll’s body and then blow it up using a detonator. But then the detonator fell off. In the helicopter, Andreas realized that he couldn’t just drop the water drum in the troll’s mouth. He needed to jump inside the troll and blow the water drum up using a hand grenade. Andreas video called his wife, Siggy, who was pregnant at that time, and she realized that she wouldn’t see her husband ever again. Andreas made the jump, and the troll exploded. Marion was, after all, right in speculating that a troll’s heart was the center of its power. Trondheim was saved, but in the process, Nora lost a good friend, and that regret will likely stay with her forever.

What happened during the mid-credit scene?

Life went back to normal; Beautiful went back into the Dovre mountains, and it seemed that everything would be fine from thereon. But it was not so, as Professor Moller had other plans. He had been able to take a piece of rock that he referred to as the specimen, just before the Vemork gas station had been destroyed. Till that moment, he hadn’t been able to map the DNA of the troll, but in the mid-credit scene we got to know that he had achieved success. He has not only mapped the DNA, but he has also been able to clone it and create a mini troll using the genome. Now, it could happen that Professor Moller might enhance its regenerative abilities and use it to the state’s advantage. He was reporting directly to the general, which meant that he definitely had plans to weaponize it. I believe that there were other trolls apart from Beautiful too, and the general and his men might have neutralized them, considering the hatred he had for those creatures. Apart from that immediate repercussion, there could be other, more outrageous strategies at play too.

Replicating the troll DNA meant that the military had a dangerous weapon in their hands, like an unstable nuclear reactor. They could use it to strengthen their defense system and also invoke a sense of fear in the enemy nations.  I believe the military would make use of the breakthrough to further their vested interests one way or another. And these vested interests could include spreading propaganda, spreading fear in the masses, and making sure the current regime stays in power and they have the complete authority to go ultra vires.
