There were many revelations made in the previous episodes of Twelve that made us realize what Samin was after, the kind of relationship Mirr and Ogwi shared, and the identity of Haetae, whose powers Samin aimed to harness. While Mirr and Ogwi were lovers who were forced to part ways, Taesan was like a father figure to the evil Haetae. So, let’s find out what happened in episodes 5 and 6 and if Samin was able to get all three stones with Ogwi’s help or not.
Spoiler Alert
Did Ogwi’s memories come back?
Ogwi knew that in order to get the powers of Haetae, he needed to take Mirr with him and perform a ritual on her to get access to the dragon stone, i.e., one of the three magical stones. In Twelve episode 5, we got to know that the attack on Geumsoon was just to distract Taesan and his people. Everybody, apart from Bangwool and Mirr, left to defend Geumsoon, and for the first time in a long while, they found it extremely hard to defend themselves. Geumsoon suffered a fatal wound, and though nobody said it outright, they knew that she would succumb to her injuries. Taesan arrived just in time and thrashed Samin’s men. He went back to his base, only to find out that Ogwi and Samin had taken Mirr with them.
Through a flashback sequence, we got a glimpse of the forbidden relationship that Mirr and Ogwi had back in the day. Time and again, Mirr’s well-wishers told her to stay away from Ogwi, as he was not one of them. They told her that if she kept in contact with him, things wouldn’t end well for either of them. But Mirr was blinded by her love. She knew that the odds didn’t favor her, but still she didn’t want to let go of the hope. Her mind and heart were at odds with each other, and she didn’t know what to do. There came a time when Marok and Taesan realized that Ogwi had defied the gods. Probably they knew that, deep down, he still had some goodness in him, but they just couldn’t overlook his actions and the choices he made. It was Marok who erased Ogwi and Mirr’s memories, and then he trapped Ogwi’s soul in a manner that he was neither dead nor alive. For thousands of years after that, Ogwi was trapped in that rocky terrain, escaping only after Samin came to his rescue.
Coming back to the present timeline, while performing the ritual on Mirr, Ogwi had a flashback, and he fell unconscious. It was at that moment that he got his memory back. He remembered the time he spent with Mirr and what they meant to each other. I believe that it was love, the strong bond that existed between them, that helped Ogwi get back his memory. It was love that overpowered Marok’s spell and broke it.
How did Marok die?
While Ogwi was unconscious, Samin took his stone (not the dragon stone, but the one Ogwi already had), and he was able to tap into Haetae’s powers. The Hellmouth had still not been opened, but still Samin had enough power to get the better of his nemesis, Marok. We came to know in Twelve (episodes 5th and 6th) that Marok was no common human, he was the chosen one. He was Taesan’s guardian, and he had always been alongside him to make sure that he was safe. Marok believed that he would be able to control Samin, not knowing that he had become much more powerful than he could have imagined using the stones. Though Marok fought and killed Samin’s demon thugs, using his staff to burn them all and send them to the underworld, he was no match in front of Samin. Samin stabbed Marok and then left him there to die. Meanwhile, Ogwi had also escaped with Mirr, who still hadn’t gained consciousness. Samin revived his soldiers, and he went out to spread chaos and cause destruction. His ultimate aim was to establish his dominance over the world and make humans his slaves. Marok, who was taking his last breaths, gave a call to Taesan and told him about whatever had happened. He told him that he would have to open the Hellmouth, as otherwise it would be impossible to stop Samin. In a gut-wrenching moment he told him that he probably wouldn’t ever be able to repay his debt and that Taesan would have to forgive him for that. Taesan reached Samin’s base, and he found that Marok had already passed away. Taesan brought Marok’s body back to his base and gave him a proper funeral. With rage in his heart and vengeance in his soul, a teary-eyed Taesan went to do something that he knew could have grave consequences.
Why Did Taesan Open The Hellmouth?
So before getting into the nitty-gritty of how Taesan opened the Hellmouth and why he had to do so, let’s first understand what the Hellmouth was and what was hidden beneath it. So back in the day, after Marok and Taesan got to know that Haetae had become evil, they went against him. I don’t think Taesan could have ever killed Haetae, because deep down he was emotionally attached to him. His duty came before anything else, which was why he taught him a lesson and bashed him to the point where he felt disoriented. Once Haetae disintegrated, i.e., his physical form fizzled into thin air, his soul was trapped inside a pit. That pit was sealed by Marok using his powers, though he knew that it would deprive the other angels of their powers too. That pit was the Hellmouth, and it was Haetae’s evil spirit that was trapped inside it. Marok took Taesan to open it because he knew that it would be impossible for the angels to stop Samin without their powers. He knew that, using the stone, Samin had been able to tap into Haetae’s powers, and he had become really powerful. At the end of Twelve episode 6, Taesan broke open the Hellmouth. He told his team that they would use their power to kill Samin and then immediately seal the Hellmouth once again. But I don’t think that it is going to be so easy to stop Samin and to even seal Hellmouth. We saw how the sky turned black, how the negative energies engulfed the entire world the moment the Hellmouth opened.
Samin had already started turning humans into evil spirits, and he had an entire army ready to sacrifice themselves on his orders. Ogwi, on the other hand, had gone back to the same place where he was trapped for a thousand years, but this together with Mirr. Mirr still hadn’t come back to her senses, and once she does, we will get to know if she remembers who Ogwi was to her, and what kind of relationship she shared with him. I believe that Ogwi, in the subsequent episodes, will help Taesan and the others out in their battle against Samin and his army. Though it was Samin who had brought him back to the mortal realm, he had done so solely out of his selfish interests. Ogwi, in fact, went against Samin the moment he realized that the latter had taken his stone. He even dealt a lethal blow to Samin, who recovered as if nothing happened to him. One thing that became pretty clear was that Samin couldn’t be killed so easily, and Taesan would have to conjure some special powers to stop him.
