Spoiler Alert
What happened to Veronica and Marta?
Veronica and Marta left to visit the Saint Anthony’s fair, and they were supposed to return to their homes at night. When Veronica’s grandmother, Isabel, called her up the next morning, Veronica’s little sister, Lupe, picked up and told her that Veronica hadn’t returned yet. Isabel got worried, and later, when both Veronica and Marta did not show up for a couple of days, the local authorities started a search operation to track them down. Marta’s father, Rafael Salazar, was a well-known figure involved in all sorts of illicit activities. Salazar was a dangerous man, and so he started his own parallel investigation, as he did not have an ounce of trust in the authorities. But even he came to a dead end, and he couldn’t find out what happened to the girls. It came to be known that a boy named Jonas Harrera dropped the girls in his car at a certain location after they left the fair. Jonas was questioned by the authorities, and later he was tortured by Salazar and his men. But Jonas had nothing to do with their disappearance. The boy wanted to spend time with them, but since they were meeting a friend later that night, he dropped them where they asked him to. Eventually, Veronica’s jacket, which she was wearing on the day of her disappearance, was found. And then later, the police made a grim discovery; Marta had been raped and killed mercilessly. The perpetrator, whoever it was, had smashed her skull in with a rock and dumped her body at sea. Salazar was livid; if it was left to him, he would have burned the entire city down. But since he couldn’t find any evidence whatsoever, he had to just make peace with whatever had happened and try to move ahead in life. But that didn’t mean that Salazar had forgotten everything. He was like a volcano that could erupt at any moment, and that is what happened after Isabel made a shocking discovery.
Who killed Beltran and Carlos?
Isabel just couldn’t make peace with the fact that her granddaughter was no more. Her son, Antonio, kept telling her that she needed to give up any hope of finding anything related to Veronica’s death. But Isabel just couldn’t do that. Isabel tracked down Jonas, as she felt that he hadn’t told everything to the authorities, and she believed that he might give her a few details that could give her investigation a new direction. Jonas told Isabel how his entire life was ruined just because he had given a lift to the girls that night. He told Isabel that the girls had mentioned they were going to meet a friend who had invited them to a party. Jonas also mentioned that Veronica wore a pair of green-colored earrings for the first time in his car. He said that he remembered that bit because the girls talked about how bad they looked, and Jonas had ended up asking Veronica why she would wear them if she didn’t like them. Isabel knew which earrings he was talking about since it was she who had gifted them to Veronica. Isabel had bought another pair for herself. She wore them just to remember the good times she had spent with Veronica. She was giving piano lessons to a guy named Beltran when he suddenly looked at Isabel, noticed her earrings, and said that Veronica had the same ones. Now, since Veronica had worn them just before going to that party, Isabel realized that Beltran knew what had happened to her granddaughter. She spiked Beltran’s coffee, and once he became unconscious, she tied him up. Isabel had to resort to certain violent techniques to get the facts out of Beltran. She got to know that Beltran had organized a party that night, which was attended by a lot of influential people. He told her that the celebrity TV presenter Carlos Jaen was also present there, and he got intimate with both Marta and Veronica. Writhing in pain after being tortured by Isabel, Beltran lost his temper. In a fit of rage he disrespected Veronica and told Isabel that her granddaughter was a sex worker who would do anything for money. Isabel couldn’t control her anger, and she ended up smashing Beltran’s head in with a hammer. The boy tried to call the police, but he succumbed to his injuries before he could say a word. Isabel went to Salazar and allied with him, as she knew that only he had the contacts to find out what had happened that night. Also, she wanted somebody to dispose of Beltran’s body for her. Salazar took care of the dead body, and then later he abducted Carlos Jaen and held him in captivity. Salazar got to know that, though Carlos hadn’t killed his daughter, he had raped her that night. Salazar killed Carlos in the most brutal manner, which spoke volumes about how terrifying he could be, and to what extent he was ready to go to find the people who had killed her daughter.
Was Veronica dead or alive?
As stated earlier, Beltran had called the emergency number, and though he didn’t say anything, his call was recorded. When Miguel Zaera, the police officer handling the case, heard the recording, he noticed that somebody was whistling in the background. He made the call recording public, and he asked the people to come forward if they recognized that whistle. That whittling sound was made by Ceferino, who had arrived at Isabel’s doorstep at that time. He was attracted to Isabel, and he desperately wanted to take her out on a date. When Ceferino heard the recording, he told Isabel that if she didn’t go out with him, he would tell the police that Beltran was at her house when he had come to visit her the other day. Isabel didn’t pay any attention to him, and so he went and reported everything to the authorities. The police reached Isabel’s house, as they suspected that she had killed Beltran. They found traces of blood at her place, and their suspicions grew firmer after that. The police recovered Beltran’s laptop, on which they found pictures of him and Veronica from that party after which she had disappeared. So, once again, the police began to investigate the matter, something that Antonio, Veronica’s father, didn’t want. Lupe had overdosed on drugs and had to be hospitalized. Antonio and Isabel were at the hospital when the former made a shocking revelation, just because he knew that he wouldn’t be able to hide the truth. He told Isabel that Veronica was still alive.
That night, Veronica, Marta, and a third girl named Jamila left the party, after which they had an argument. Marta wanted to go and report to the authorities that she had been raped by Carlos Jaen. Veronica didn’t want her to do that, because they had taken money to attend, and she knew that they would be branded as sex workers if anybody got to know about it. The girls entered into an argument, and Veronica lost her temper and pushed Marta, who hit her head and succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Veronica didn’t know what to do, and so she called her father, who realized the gravity of the matter. Antonio disposed of Marta’s body and then asked one of his friends to take Veronica to Morocco that very night. Antonio didn’t want anybody looking for Veronica, as he knew that if Salazar got to know what had really happened that night, he wouldn’t leave Veronica alive.
Was Salazar able to find Veronica?
The problem was that after Isabel had gotten to know that there was a third girl present that night named Jamila, she had gone to meet Salazar and told him about it. Salazar had already figured out where she lived, and he was going there to search for her. Isabel decided to take matters into her own hands. She tracked down Jamila, and that’s when she got to know that Veronica was staying with her. Isabel had an emotional reunion with her granddaughter, but she knew that she needed to be on the move. Isabel sent Veronica out of town, and her plan was to make Salazar meet Jamila and let her explain whatever happened that night. Jamila was a neutral party, and Isabel knew that Salazar wouldn’t hurt her. Isabel met Salazar, and it didn’t take long for him to figure out that Veronica was alive and Isabel was trying to protect her. Salazar told Isabel that he wanted to meet Veronica. Isabel saw the look in his eyes, and she knew that the meeting wouldn’t end well for her granddaughter. I think Isabel made an impulsive decision to drive her car off the cliff. She felt that that was the only way she could save Veronica. The car fell into the sea, and I believe both Isabel and Salazar met their fateful end. Now, knowing how filmmakers love weaving in unexpected twists, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of them were to come out of the water alive. Yet, as of now, the logical deduction would be that neither of them survived. If you ask me what drove Isabel to take her own life, then I’d say it was the last conversation she had with Veronica. Isabel was told by Veronica and Antonio alive how she wasn’t there for them when they needed her. Veronica told Isabel that she didn’t judge her for it, but she had been selfish in her life. Veronica’s mother had passed away, and she needed more than ever then. Isabel was busy living her own life like a refugee and moving from place to place. Though Veronica didn’t have any grudges against her, it was impossible for Isabel to not feel guilty. Salazar’s vengeance fueled obsessive emotions in him, which ultimately became the reason for his demise. I believe taking Salazar down with her was a last act of love that Isabel had for her family. Nobody wanted things to turn out that way, but I believe Isabel knew that was the only choice she had to ensure the safety of her family.
