Netflix’s ‘Two Graves’ Season 1 Character Guide

Published

Two Graves introduced us to a plethora of characters who were either directly involved in Veronica’s disappearance or whose lives were impacted by the tragic incident. So let’s get to know who these characters were, how their lives got impacted, and what role they had to play in the grand scheme of things.

Spoiler Alert

Isabel

Isabel was Veronica and Lupe’s grandmother, and she just couldn’t accept the fact that her granddaughter was gone for good. The police had almost given up hope, but Isabel just couldn’t do that. Also, I believe Isabel bore the guilt of not being able to be there for her family when they needed her the most. Veronica and Lupe’s mother had passed away a while back, and Isabel was busy living the hippie life at that point. To some extent she had been quite selfish, as she wanted to live life on her own terms and not make any compromises. But that didn’t mean that she didn’t love her granddaughter. In fact, at the end of the season, she took her own life just so that Veronica could have a safe future.

Veronica

Veronica attracted the spotlight wherever she went; she got a lot of male attention, and she made the wrong decision of using it to her benefit. Veronica used to get paid to attend parties, and she kept that fact a secret, since she knew the impact it could have on the reputation of her family. Veronica had an argument with her friend Marta, who accompanied her at one such party organized by a guy named Beltran. Veronica, in a fit of rage, pushed Marta, and the latter succumbed to her injuries on the spot. After that, Veronica knew that it was not safe for her to stay back in town. She called her father, and he decided to send her to Morocco and make it look like she had gone missing. Veronica got a second shot at life, something that most people don’t. I believe she will make the most of it and, moreover, try to be happy in her life.

Marta

We never got to know much about Marta apart from the fact that she was Salazar’s daughter and a good friend of Veronica’s. It was Marta who wanted to go and report to the authorities after she was raped at Beltran’s party. I don’t think there was anything wrong with that, as the man who had forced himself upon her, Carlos, should have been put behind bars. But Veronica was scared, because she knew that the people of the town would brand them as escorts. That was the kind of incident that leaves a lifetime of regret behind. Veronica never wanted to hurt her friend, but unfortunately it happened, and it kickstarted a chain of events that ended rather tragically for Veronica’s entire family.

Antonio

Antonio was Veronica’s father, and he was the one whom Veronica called after she realized that Marta had died. Antonio wanted to protect his daughter at all costs, and instead of panicking, he applied his logical mind at that moment. He realized that Salazar wouldn’t leave him or his daughter alive if he got to know that his daughter had lost her life in an accident. So Antonio made arrangements and made Veronica leave town, and for the next two years he didn’t tell even a single soul that Veronica was still alive. After Isabel killed Beltran, the investigation was reopened, and that’s when Antonio first told Isabel that Veronica was alive. While Isabel wanted to find the truth, Antonio wanted people to forget about the case. I believe, had he told his mother about his plan, things would have been much better, but he too didn’t know that Isabel would just refuse to give up on her search till the very end.

Salazar

Rafael Salazar was the kingpin of the underworld, who had his hands dipped in all kinds of illegal activities. Salazar tried to run a parallel investigation after his daughter was murdered. He desperately wanted to find out who the perpetrators were, but he was not able to make any breakthrough until he formed an alliance with Isabel. Isabel realized that she had committed a blunder by looping Salazar in on her plan. She realized that if he got to know that Veronica was still alive, he would definitely want to meet her, and there was no guarantee that he wouldn’t kill her. Salazar was sitting in Isabel’s car when she intentionally drove it off a cliff. It’s likely that both Isabel and Salazar met their fate in the end.

Lupe

Veronica’s disappearance had had a huge impact on Lupe’s mental well-being. Lupe started to lose herself over a period of time. She missed Veronica, and to cope with the trauma, she created a fake narrative in her mind where she felt that her parents loved Veronica more than they loved her. Deep down, she knew that that was not the case, but her troubled mind just made things worse for her. Lupe overdosed on drugs as the people around her started harassing her by saying that her sister was a characterless woman. Fortunately, Lupe was saved, and just like Veronica, she got a chance to make a fresh start and tend to her mental health.

Jonas and Beltran

Jonas and Beltran were the last two people to have met Veronica before she disappeared. Where Jonas had given Marta and Veronica a lift that night, it was Beltran who was the organizer of the party where a celebrity anchor named Carlos had raped Marta. Nobody knew about Beltran’s involvement until Isabel figured out that he had met Veronica that night. Beltran ended up insulting Veronica in the worst possible manner, and Isabel couldn’t hold herself back. Isabel killed Beltran, after which she had to form an alliance with Salazar, as she knew that only he could dispose of the dead body and help her find her granddaughter.

Jamila

Jamila was also present at Beltran’s party, and she was the sole witness who had seen Marta dying. She got so scared after everything that she left town, and later Isabel found out that she and Veronica were living together. I believe Jamila and Veronica were dating each other, and they were happy in their own small world. I believe that Jamila too knew that somebody would come looking for them one day, but until that day, she wanted to live every moment to its fullest.

Ceferino

Ceferino didn’t have a very big role to play, but he did something that allowed the police to reopen Veronica’s case and pin the blame for Beltran’s death on Isabel. Ceferino was head over heels for Isabel, and just had one desire, to take Isabel on a date. Isabel didn’t reciprocate his feelings, and so he decided to force her to go out with him. Ceferino had realized, after listening to Beltran’s emergency call recording which was made public by the police, that Beltran was at Isabel’s place when he had gone to meet her.
