‘Typhoon Family’ Episode 14 Recap & Ending Explained: What Did Hyun-Jun Do?

Published

Episode 14 of Typhoon Family gives us a very unexpected turn of events in the middle of an otherwise kind of boring episode. I don’t know about you, but I feel like this is one of those shows that should’ve been shorter, and it’s like everything’s being dragged out now. I am quite enjoying the romance, which feels very natural and authentic, but the problem is that there’s so much else going on, it feels like the show runners are just trying to do too much all at once, and for this one particular show, it’s not having the effect it’s supposed to. To be fair, this is the thing that I like most about K-dramas, but this one is kind of failing to impress now. I don’t know if this is just me feeling a slump or if the show is genuinely not working. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments. But anyway, with only two episodes left, adding a new crisis seems to be a little bit too much, and again, after everything was finally sorted out, there’s going to be a bigger mess (sigh). With that said, let’s jump into episode 14.

Spoiler Alert

What Deal Does Tae-Poong Make With Pyo?

Typhoon Family episode 14 begins with Tae-Poong meeting Pyo and bluffing that he has the promissory note. Tae-Poong only wants 3 million gloves in return, rather than the money with interest for the amount his dad gave Pyo. To be fair, he doesn’t know how much it would’ve added up to, but he takes a risk and fakes it, allowing him to make a deal with Pyo. Pyo agrees to give him the gloves, but on the condition that they follow the same conditions that his dad had given him. He writes a handwritten agreement and tells Tae-Poong that the big condition is that he gives Pyo the promissory note when he returns the money, and if he doesn’t, he has to offer something big, because the guy doesn’t have money. Tae-Poong says he won’t give Pyo the company, because it’s not his to give, but he’ll give up his position (which is essentially the same thing, no?). Tae-Poong also writes in the agreement that the other employees of Typhoon Trading will not be affected by this deal, and Pyo agrees.

At the same time, Seon-Taek apologizes to Mi-Seon about the fire, and essentially confesses to her that it’s kind of her fault for letting Hyun-Jun know about it, making it clear that he’s the one who set the fire. We then go to the port where the gloves are being transferred, and Mi-Seon slaps Hyun-Jun, knowing he’s the one who nearly killed her, but he still acts aloof, like he has no idea what she’s talking about. But later we learn that, unfortunately, there isn’t enough evidence against him for the arson case, but at least they have insurance to cover their losses.

On the other hand, Seon-Taek makes a delivery, and everyone yells at her for what she did, and not telling them how bad her situation had gotten, but she isn’t keen on apologizing either. However, Tae-Poong tells her that she should not feel guilty for what she’s done to his father because he’s carrying enough of that himself. This makes her cry, but she still walks away standing strong. Later, Tae-Poong surprises Mi-Seon with a mobile phone, and he’s got one too, so they can text each other.

What Happens To Pyo?

The most shocking thing to happen in this episode is when Hyun-Jun goes to talk to his father about everything that’s gone down and gets furious about the fact that his dad thinks more highly of Tae-Poong than his own son. This is something that really gets to his head, and seeing his dad also compare him to Tae-Poong and essentially calling him a nuisance in comparison to him sets off something violent in Hyun-Jun, and he doesn’t even hesitate to hit his dad in the back of his head. There’s literally no remorse in this man because he simply hides the body, and I have a feeling it’s going to be Tae-Poong who gets in trouble for this murder. But hey, at least he doesn’t have to care about the promissory note if the man himself is gone?

When it’s finally the day he was supposed to give him the promissory note, Tae-Poong’s frustrated because Pyo’s not picking up the phone. Mi-Seon puts together a cashier’s check for the amount they owe for the gloves, just in case, and then she and Tae-Poong head to Pyo’s office, where Manager Ha tries to keep them from getting in. When Tae-Poong breaks through anyways, he’s surprised to see Pyo’s desk is empty, and Hyun-Jun’s in his office entertaining some foreigner and signing off on documents. He even claims to Tae-Poong’s face that he’s the CEO now. Annoyed by his antics, Tae-Poong grabs a permanent marker and writes his name and the date and time on the wall, almost as proof that he showed up to honor the deal, but Mr. Pyo wasn’t there. We’ll have to see how the legality of Hyun-Jun assuming control of the company plays out, given there’s no death certificate and nobody knows what’s really happened.

How Does Everybody’s Day At The Beach Go?

Seeing how Beom’s started staying up late at night watching educational TV programs about blue whales and how massive the sea is, and he’s the only person in the family who’s not been to the beach yet, Mi-Seon decides it’s high time for a family outing, except it’s all hands on deck. And so Beom, Mi-Seon, Mi-Ho, Tae-Poong, and Nam-Mo head out to have a day out at the beach (Tae-Poong’s mum stays back to look after Mi-Seon’s grandma, and Mi-Seon tells her to look after her, given she’s been sleeping a lot – wonder if this is foreshadowing something sad coming our way). Beom’s initially kinda intimidated by the massive expanse that is the limitless sea, but Tae-Poong makes him feel at ease with the water, telling him the depths of the sea might feel scary, but it’s just cold water up here, splashing him. The moment Nam-Mo comes around with a life preserver for him, Beom’s a lot more excited about getting in the water.

A little later, while everyone’s having a great time, Tae-Poong’s sitting on a beach towel and staring off into the distance; he’s clearly got something on his mind, a startling contrast to Beom, who’s buried in the sand with only his head poking out, no-thoughts-head-empty. Mi-Seon accuses him of thinking about the company or the promissory note, but Tae-Poong deflects and says he was thinking about his girlfriend. She ends up dragging him away, and they go on a scavenging expedition. Mi-Seon is a pro at finding clams, while all Tae-Poong can seemingly get his hands on is sea mustard, which reminds him of the birthday meal everyone at the company shared, where they all had seaweed soup after a hard night’s work. Tae-Poong gets too attached to the clams and even names them, so when Mi-Seon says she was scavenging them for dinner, Tae-Poong hurries up and chucks them all out into the sea with a smile on his face. It might seem like it was all a pointless exercise, but he does admit to Mi-Seon later that the entire time they were out here, he wasn’t thinking about work at all.

That night, they don’t have enough tents to let everyone sleep in them, so Tae-Poong ends up taking the car, where he searches for the promissory note again, but all he finds is his grade report card from 1986. He had multiple Fs that year, and his dad had signed off on the report card apologizing for his son’s poor performance and asking the teacher to continue guiding him. Tae-Poong can’t help but chuckle and shake his head at the very Mr. Kang note. Mi-Seon shows up at the car too, and she tries to help him search for the promissory note, but when he’s struggling to hide his report card, Mi-Seon practically ends up falling right on top of him, not that she minds anymore. Suddenly, though, Beom shows up, and they have to pretend nothing was happening.

Turns out, Mi-Ho is really upset back in the tent, and it’s annoying Beom. Earlier, Nam-Mo had overheard Mi-Ho talking to her ex, Tae-Min, on the phone, and it had sounded almost like she was asking him to get back with her. This has all the markers of a classic romcom misunderstanding, where it’ll turn out she was really reaching out to help Nam-Mo out, and he jumped to a conclusion; but in the meanwhile, the happy couple isn’t quite so happy.

In the ending of Typhoon Family episode 14, when everyone gets back, the gloves deal has gone off without a hitch (or without any more hitches), and they’re thrilled to celebrate their return to the old Typhoon Trading office, even though Tae-Poong doesn’t move into the CEO’s office just yet. There’s an extended ribbon-cutting sequence and a bunch of cute pictures, and it seems like things are finally going to be okay for the trading company. But of course, things can never go well for the “Typhoon Family,” and Mr. Bae comes stumbling into the office clutching his phone, saying his father’s going to kill himself. The phone starts ringing again after he returns, but all he can do is cling to Tae-Poong and sob. What happened to his father, and why does he feel so helpless? We’ll have to wait till next week to find out.
