‘Typhoon Family’ Episode 15 Recap: What Happens To Song-Jung’s Dad’s Company?

Published

We’re finally on the last weekend of Typhoon Family, and it’s made me realize that I much prefer a 12-episode show now. I know this show has a lot going on, but the main plot could’ve been wrapped up in 14, if not 12, episodes. 16 makes it feel a little bit too dragged out, and I wish the story were tighter and crisper and the crises weren’t so frequent. While I do understand that’s the whole point and that we’re meant to feel completely devastated for these characters, the truth is, because of the number of problems, I’ve stopped feeling anything real for the characters. To be honest, I was very defensive about this show, because, unlike what people say, the chemistry is genuinely lovely, and the story was also interesting to begin with, but I can’t help but feel like the last few episodes have just been a little disappointing. But I’m hoping the final episode will finally give us that rainbow that the title track keeps directing us towards. But with that said, let’s jump straight into episode 15.

Spoiler Alert

What Happens to Typhoon Trading?

Typhoon Family episode 15 begins with Song-Jung showing up crying, claiming his father is going to kill himself. After quickly comforting him, Tae-Poong, Mi-Seon, and Song-Jung rush to save the latter’s old man. Song-Jung’s father is stepping off the edge of the roof of the building, where there’s a platform; if he weren’t holding onto the railing, he’d have fallen in a second. But as usual, Tae-Poong is ready to rescue the guy, and even when the only way to get to him is a derelict ladder, he decides to go instead of a shivering and anxious Song-Jung. Turns out the man hasn’t been able to pay his employees for 3 months, but they have gathered money for his sake. This has left him so devastated that he thinks it’ll be best if he’s gone and his employees are set free, essentially. Tae-Poong tells Song-Jung’s father about how, after his father’s death, he didn’t forgo his inheritance of the company just so he would not have to pay off his father’s debts. Instead, he chose to stick with it because he’s his father’s son first.

Tae-Poong also introduces himself as family to Song-Jung’s father, and even though they don’t know each other, it’s a touching moment, and ultimately, he hugs him from behind, making sure he can’t jump. This is when the rest of his employees are able to break the door down. Later, Tae-Poong checks out Song-Jung’s dad’s company and their products. His father is an engineer and has created some cool products, including a sound-activated robot and security cameras. Immediately, Tae-Poong knows that these have good potential on the international market, and the only competition they have is Japan, but the quality and the pricing are competitive, making it a great deal for Typhoon Trading.

Meanwhile, Hyun-Jun has kept his father alive but also kept him in isolation so that he can take over the company. Phew, I thought the old man was dead. Hyun-Jun then searches his father, who’s hurt badly and can’t even speak, to find the promissory note between him and Tae-Poong. But the next thing you know, Hyun-Jun is there bringing new sofas into the office, because the company’s his now; he’s the CEO of his father’s company. Of course, Tae-Poong doesn’t really have his father’s promissory note, so he has to step down from his position as head of the company. He agrees to do so, but he also makes sure he signs the sign-off papers with the company stamp to make the payment by 30th June 1998. I’m not entirely sure what this means, but I think it’s to keep the employees secure, and he’s also paying off his debt? The only thing missing is the note? We then see a montage of all the stuff Tae-Poong endured to keep the company afloat, while all his employees are crying about the situation, but of course, he’ll be back real soon.

What Happens With Nam-Mo?

Now, remember how Mi-Ho was having a conversation with her ex? Well, it turns out she was doing it to help Nam-Mo, because the dude is clearly meant to be a musician. Her ex is a manager at an entertainment company and was willing to give the guy a shot, but when Nam-Mo finds this out, instead of being grateful for having such a kind and generous girlfriend, he acts all high and mighty and claims to her that he doesn’t need this. All he wanted to do was keep her happy (man, when did he get so lame?). Mi-Ho was crying over this guy? Tsk tsk. Anyway, Mi-Ho comes to her senses at this point and tells him that he’s not helping anyone by doing whatever else he’s doing begrudgingly. He should really be doing music, and she wanted to get him there, but she breaks up with him for good.

What Happens To Song-Jung’s Dad’s Company?

On the other hand, Hyun-Jun’s employees really make it difficult for the Typhoon guys to actually get their work done. Hyun-Jun even gets Mi-Seon to get him a coffee instead of approving her request to take out the bankbook. But ultimately, she’s able to get out money to give to Song-Jung’s dad to repay his debt. Meanwhile, Tae-Poong now works for Song-Jung’s dad’s company, because they’re friendly and help everybody, including Seon-Taek. But ultimately, despite all the fuss, they’re too late to reach the bank, which means the company is now declared bankrupt. At the same time, Hyun-Jun gets the same bank a new international client, and it happens to be the same guy Tae-Poong saw Hyun-Jun making a deal with earlier. Tae-Poong then causes a scene when the bank manager tells Song-Jung’s father that it’s because of people like him that the financial crisis happened in the first place (how is Tae-Poong going to pay for the damages, though?).

The next day, all their assets are seized by the bank, and Hyun-Jun tells Tae-Poong that everything is going to belong to him once all the assets are auctioned off. Additionally, Mark, the “international” client, has a look at one of their products, a fan that can help cool down the inside of smaller cameras. But what he doesn’t know is that the robot in the room has caught onto his musings and catches his actions on tape, meaning that they can be used as evidence later. It does seem like he wants to try and create his own version of this product.

Finally, the gang gather together in the dead of night to figure out their next move. Seon-Taek, who drops by with some corn for them to munch on, lingers in the corner and listens in too. They realize they need to find the document this Mark guy signed with Hyun-Jun. They can get the key through some distractions in the Typhoon office and break in to get what they need. After the break-in, they try to find the document, but what Tae-Poong finds instead is something that belongs to his dad, a wooden, carved box-like thing. At the same time, Mr. Koo, who has been forced into the position of security guard by Hyun-Jun, notices him taking an empty plate out of one of the storage crates. However, just before he can discover Pyo, he gets called to the building because Tae-Poong and Mi-Seon get caught.

At the end of Typhoon Family episode 15, Tae-Poong, Mi-Seon, and Seon-Taek, who also broke in and felt responsible for the company, are saved by Go Ma-Jin’s taekwondo kick. The gang escapes, and just as Seon-Taek is about to leave, Tae-Poong calls out to her, accidentally dropping one half of the box in his hand. Turns out, this is where the promissory note was hiding this whole time. This was written back in 1989, and Pyo was supposed to transfer 30% of his shares in Pyo Merchant Marine to Tae-Poong’s dad. Finally, they’ve got their ticket out of this big mess. The happy ending we’ve been waiting for will finally come in the final episode of Typhoon Family.
