At the end of Undercover High School episode 10, Jeong Hae-seong’s 22-year-long search came to an end when he found his father’s skeletal remains. The episode revealed that, for the longest time, Hae-seong and Oh Soo-ah believed that the gold bars were hidden in the secret passage, beneath the statue of the founding chairman, but little did they know what they were going to find there. Chairwoman Seo Myeong-joo still believed that Hae-seong knew where the gold was hidden, and that he was just not telling anybody. She was hell-bent on using that gold to build her education city, and she didn’t care about what happened to those kids who wouldn’t be able to afford the 50 percent hike in the tuition fee. So let’s find out what happened in episode 11: what did Hae-seong find out about his father’s death, and was he able to stop the chairwoman from ruining the lives of the kids?
Spoiler Alert
What did Jeong Hae-seong find out about his father’s death?
For years Hae-seong had been searching for his father, and at the end he found his dead body lying in the hidden passage beneath the statue of Seo Byeong-mun. Obviously, Hae-seong was shattered, not because he lost his father, but because he never got a chance to say goodbye. He was hopeful for the longest time that his father was alive, but on that day he got his closure, which I believe he never wanted. I don’t know what was worse: to finally know that his father was no more or to live with the hope that one day he was going to return, even when it was never going to happen. Hae-seong pulled himself together, and his father’s skeleton was sent for autopsy.
Hae-seong had found a bullet near his father’s skeletal remains, and he realized that he had probably been shot. When the forensic report arrived, it came to be known that the bullet was from a Glock 17, the kind of weapon that only the NIS agents used to carry in the past. That was when Ahn Seok-ho, the HW team leader, and Hae-seong realized that back in the day, Director Kim had filed a report for a missing bullet. They realized that the director was not only a traitor, but also a conniving and shrewd man who had conspired together with Chairwoman Seo Myeong-joo, but he also had a role to play in Hae-seong’s father’s death. Hae-seong decided that it was about time he needed to confront the director head-on. Hae-seong’s entire team was against the idea, but before they could do anything, Hae-seong left to interrogate the director. Director Kim had his men stationed outside his hotel room, but Hae-seong was able to get past them. Before he could ask any questions or do anything, Director Kim’s security arrived and took Hae-seong into custody. Hae-seong that day would have been put behind bars had Ahn Seok-ho, together with Oh Soo-ah, Go Yeoung-hun, and Park Mi-jeong, not arrived there to help his cause. They managed to escape together, and that’s when Hae-seong told Ahn Seok-ho the real reason behind his visit to Director Kim’s. He said that he was not foolish enough to go and try to kill the director. Hae-seong had used the opportunity to hack into the director’s phone so that he could keep track of his movements and also listen to what he spoke to others. Hae-seong knew that the director would go and talk to the chairwoman about what had happened and probably talk about what they did to Hae-seong’s father.
Who killed Jeong Hae-seong’s father?
Director Kim and the chairwoman believed that Jeong Jae-hyeon, Hae-seong’s father, knew where the gold bars were kept. They wanted Jae-hyeon to tell them the location, but till the very end he did not disclose anything. In a flashback sequence, we saw that it was the chairwoman who shot at Jae-hyeon from Director Kim’s gun, but the latter managed to escape and hide in the same hidden passage where his skeleton was found 22 years later by his son. Director Kim and the chairwoman were never able to find him as they had no clue that a secret passage existed beneath the statue of the founding chairman. For years they believed that Jae-hyeon had hidden the gold somewhere and escaped from the country. In his last moments, Jae-hyeon realized that he wouldn’t be able to survive. He had been shot at his stomach, and he had lost quite a lot of blood. Jae-hyeon wasn’t scared of dying. He knew that in his line of work, one had to take such risks, but what made him extremely restless was the fact that he wouldn’t be able to meet his son ever again. It was Hae-seong’s birthday the next day, and he had promised him that he would come and wake him up from his sleep. Jae-hyeon drew his last breaths inside the hidden chamber, and his sudden disappearance from his son’s life changed the kid’s perspective about life forever.
How did the chairwoman frame Jeong Hae-seong?
Hae-seong gave a call to Director Kim and told him that he had heard everything that he had told the chairwoman when he went to confront her. So, as expected, just after Hae-seong left, Director Kim, the latter, went to meet the chairwoman. The conversation didn’t go as Director Kim would have expected. He told the chairwoman that he would expose her and tell Hae-seong who had actually killed his father. The chairwoman told the director that he could go and tell anybody about what had happened 22 years ago, but since he didn’t have any evidence to prove his claims, he wouldn’t be able to prove anything. Director Kim realized that he still didn’t have any leverage over the chairwoman, and that frustrated him. The chairwoman knew that the director would meet Hae-seong, and so she laid a trap for both of them.
On call, Director Kim had asked Hae-seong to meet him at a particular spot, but before they could meet and talk, the inevitable happened. The chairwoman’s men first killed Director Kim, and then they attacked Hae-seong too, making sure that he did not succumb to his injuries. Then they placed an unconscious Hae-seong next to director Kim in his car and planted all the evidence that proved it was the young NIS agent who had killed his boss. The local police, headed by detective Jo, arrived at the spot, and they took Hae-seong into custody. When Oh Soo-ah and the others came to know about it, they were shocked, and they didn’t know what their next action should be.
Was Jeong Hae-seong able to escape police custody?
At the end of Undercover High School episode 11, we saw that after Hae-seong was taken into custody, Detective Jo and his team reached the former’s house to search it for any evidence that could potentially incriminate the chairwoman. Hae-seong had a copy of the call recording where director Kim blamed the chairwoman for the murder of Jeong Jae-hyeon; before Ahn Seok-ho and his team were able to retrieve that, Jo arrived and took it from them. The chairwoman was quite happy at Detective Jo’s judiciousness and loyalty, and she asked her assistant to compensate him for his services. The chairwoman went to meet Hae-seong while he was in custody, and she asked him where he had hidden the gold bars. She believed that Hae-seong and his father knew the exact location of the gold, but Hae-seong told her that her obsession had made her delusional. The chairwoman told Hae-seong that if he didn’t give her any information, she would hurt the people whom he loved. She left after giving that ultimatum, and that’s when Hae-seong realized that he would have to do something, as being in police custody was not helping his cause. He knew the kind of person he was dealing with and what she was capable of doing. So in the end, Hae-seong decided to escape from police custody. While he was being transferred to a different location, Hae-seong tried to break loose, but unfortunately the driver lost control of the vehicle and met with an accident. Somehow Hae-seong was able to get out of the van and crawl to the nearest phone booth. He gave a call to Oh Soo-ah, but before he could tell her where he was, he lost consciousness. Soo-ah will have to find Hae-seong before the chairwoman’s men get hold of him again. The only way out of the mess, for the entire NIS team, was finding the gold and not letting it go into the wrong hands. Hae-seong knew that he was very close to solving the mystery and I believe that in the season finale he will be able to do so and finish what his father had started.
