The ending of Wednesday season 2 made a shocking revelation about Wednesday’s aunt, Ophelia, who had been missing for almost 20 years. Well, surprise surprise, and a spoiler warning, Ophelia Frump isn’t dead. She is very much alive and living her life in captivity, locked in an underground dungeon inside her mother, Hester’s mansion. In part 1, we found out a little bit about Ophelia when Wednesday’s mother, Morticia, finally broke her silence and told her daughter about her missing aunt. Ophelia was a Raven, just like her mother, Hester, who got obsessed with strengthening her psychic abilities during her sophomore year at Nevermore Academy. Yes, exactly the same story as Wednesday. Ophelia pushed herself beyond her limits and started shedding black tears, which made it evident to the people around her that something was not right. And then came those hysterical fits, making everyone believe that Ophelia was slowly drifting towards darkness, and that the only way to put an end to her madness was to lock her away so she couldn’t do any more damage to herself. Hence, Hester made the most difficult decision of her life and sent her to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital for her own good. But Ophelia had always been a wild spirit, a Raven who couldn’t be caged. Morticia told her daughter, Wednesday, that her aunt ran away from the mental institution, and no one ever heard from her again.
So, if Ophelia’s alive, and she is in Hester’s custody, then this has to mean that either Hester lied to the family and never really admitted Ophelia to Willow Hill, or Hester found Ophelia when she ran away from the psychiatric facility and brought her home, but Ophelia started losing her mind again, leaving Hester no other option but to lock up her own daughter. I am sure the third season of the show will explain to us what exactly happened to Ophelia, where she had been, and how she ended up in her mother’s captivity. But I know there’s one more burning question that’s been bothering you since you watched the final scene. And even though no one has the right answer to that question, I think there’s no harm in discussing it.
In Wednesday season 2’s ending, Hester opened the door to her daughter’s cell, where we saw Ophelia writing “Wednesday Must Die” on the wall with her blood. From the looks of it, Hester locked her daughter away because she believed Ophelia could have brought harm to her niece, and therefore, for Wednesday’s safety, Hester had been keeping her confined to this cell. But I think there’s more to this than meets the eye. I think Ophelia’s “blood-written” words on the wall are a part of her premonitions, in which she saw something bad happening to Wednesday, or maybe her visions convinced her that Wednesday must die for the safety of her family or the people she loved. In short, we don’t know whether it’s Ophelia who wants Wednesday dead, or it is someone else.
In season 2’s finale, Wednesday had a similar premonition, where her new guiding spirit, Larissa Weems, showed her a fractured tombstone with the name “Addams” written on it. This implied that one of the Addams was going to die, but Wednesday didn’t know which. I know that the finale addressed this part, as Issac Night had kidnapped Wednesday’s brother, Pugsley, suggesting that he was going to die at the hands of an evil scientist. But what if Wednesday’s premonition had nothing to do with this incident? What if the prophecy about the death of an Addams hasn’t come to pass yet? The reason I am saying this is because season 2’s ending hinted that Wednesday and her aunt are connected through their psychic powers, which means they both could share each other’s visions, and if that’s true, it’s possible that Ophelia had the same premonition as Wednesday, and she knows that the danger still looms over the family. Well, as I said, we’ll find out more about this in season 3; however, there’s something else I want to talk about, which I believe will lead Wednesday straight to her missing aunt. There’s a drawing of a wooden gate surrounded by human skulls in Ophelia’s diary. I think this gate either is the door to Hester’s cemetery or is located somewhere inside her mansion, and when Wednesday is going to see it again, she will instantly recognize it. Also, the skulls around the gate can be seen as a gateway to death, and we all know who’s running a business of “death” in the Addams family.
In season 2’s ending, Morticia, before saying goodbye to her daughter, gave her Ophelia’s diary, as Wednesday wanted to know more about her aunt. Both Wednesday and Ophelia were Ravens, and Wednesday believed that any information on her aunt would help her revive her psychic abilities. Morticia had burned Goody’s book of spells, which held all the secrets about Ravens and their unique powers, and even though she couldn’t bring back the book, which had turned to ashes, Morticia believed that Ophelia’s diary might give Wednesday the answers she had been looking for. In the finale, as soon as Wednesday opened her aunt’s diary, she got another vision, and it seemed like in her visions, what Wednesday saw was her aunt, who might be begging her to find her and free her from Hester’s captivity. Or maybe Ophelia’s just setting a trap for Wednesday as she wants to get freed from her confinement and will do anything to regain her freedom.
Now, I am not sure if Wednesday will be coming to her aunt’s rescue before or after finding Enid, but she’s definitely going to embark on a journey to find her missing aunt. The premonition has made Wednesday believe that Ophelia is still alive and locked up somewhere against her will, and as much as we know Wednesday, she’s not going to be at peace until she has found her aunt. Also, I found it quite fishy how Hester invited her granddaughter to spend the summer with her even though she had her daughter locked in a hidden dungeon under her mansion. Wasn’t she bothered that Wednesday would find out her secret? Or did she want her to find out? Well, too many unanswered questions there, but what we can be certain of is that Hester’s hiding way more secrets than we imagined. So, wrapping up, I guess, more family secrets are gonna spill over the next season, and I am only too excited for them.
