Wednesday’s Ophelia And Her Black Tears: Did Wednesday Find Her Aunt In Willow Hill?

Published

One of the mysteries that remained unsolved in Part 1’s ending centered around Morticia’s sister, Ophelia, who had been missing for 20 years. [Spoiler Alert] The first part of season 2 revealed that Wednesday’s aunt, Ophelia, was a “Raven,” meaning she had similar psychic powers to hers; however, somewhere down the line, she got obsessed with mastering her ability and started shedding black tears, just like Wednesday in the show. Morticia believed that those tears were the result of psychic exhaustion, as both Ophelia and Wednesday started abusing their gift to perceive the future. But as Morticia pointed out, one couldn’t trust those visions, they never showed a complete picture and were often misleading, to say the least. So, in a way, it wasn’t them who were controlling the psychic power, it was the other way around. Ophelia’s ability to see the future made her a prisoner of her own mind, and Morticia didn’t want history to repeat itself with her daughter, which was why she not only took away Goody’s book of spells but also burned it to save Wednesday from slipping into madness.

The fourth episode of Wednesday season 2 shed further light on Ophelia’s fate. Morticia told her daughter that when Ophelia was in her sophomore year, she was found screaming in the quad. She had pushed her psychic abilities too far and was shedding black tears down her cheeks, which made everyone believe that she had lost her mind. Morticia and Ophelia’s mother, Hester Frump, didn’t want to take any chances, and therefore sent her daughter to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, believing the institution run by the normies would improve Ophelia’s condition. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Morticia always knew that Willow Hill wasn’t the right place for her sister, as her problems were psychic, not mental. She pleaded with her mother to not send Ophelia away, but Hester did what she wanted to. She assumed that Ophelia wouldn’t listen to her and would once again use her psychic abilities. Hence, the only way to save her from herself was to send her to a psychiatric facility where the scientist would likely stop her from using her powers.

As per the show’s timeline, the evil scientist, Dr. Augustus Stonehearst, was the director of Willow Hill when Ophelia was sent there as a patient. And from what we know about Dr. Stonehearst, the chief psychiatrist, had been quite intrigued by Ophelia’s extraordinary psychic ability, making her the perfect specimen for his covert project, LOIS. So, I think it goes without saying that Dr. Stonehearst turned Ophelia into one of his lab rats and locked her in the basement hidden inside the maintenance room. He likely tried to extract her ability, but as we are already aware, Ophelia’s gift had been the most unstable kind, which hints at the possibility that his experiment didn’t fetch any positive results. In short, Dr. Stonehearst locked Ophelia in one of the metal chambers in his secret laboratory, where she had been waiting for her death for the last 20 years. Meanwhile, Dr. Stonehearst might have told her family, Morticia and Hester, that Ophelia ran away from the facility. They might have tried to locate her, but could find no trace of her in the outside world, because she never really left Willow Hill.

Now, coming to the concluding moments of Part 1, you might have noticed that Wednesday spotted a very peculiar patient inside the hidden basement who shared some resemblance with Morticia. I mean, I could be reaching here, but I think this woman was none other than Ophelia Frump. You might have noticed that all the other prisoners had their faces or bodies disfigured, likely as a result of Dr. Stonehearst’s experiment. It seemed like his evil extracting machine brought the Outcasts’ power to the surface, making it more visible—sort of a failed experiment. But with this woman, she had no such scar or disfigurement because her powers might be psychic, just like Wednesday’s and Ophelia’s. I know I am trying really hard to convince you that this woman was Ophelia, but I am sure we will find more about her identity in the second part of season 2.

But considering this woman is really Ophelia, what does that change for Wednesday? I mean, they both share the same powers and the same madness, so it could be possible that Ophelia becomes Wednesday’s guiding spirit, helping her to get back her psychic powers. Throughout part 1, she had been trying to get back Goody’s book of spells so she could find a way to revive her lost abilities. But Morticia burned that book in front of her mother, right? Well, that’s assuming she really burned it and was not bluffing. But whatever the case might be, I truly believe that Ophelia can help Wednesday to not only get her power back but also hone it so she won’t make the same mistakes that she did. All this speculation proves that Ophelia is a pretty important piece of the puzzle that is Wednesday Season 2; so, it’s obvious that we’ll get to know more about her in Part 2.
