Welcome To The Family’s ending is a chaotic mess that looks straight out of an 80s/90s Hollywood comedy. The Mexican Netflix original drama tells the story of a single mother who finds herself in the soup when her house is raided by thugs. All Cristina ever wanted to do was look after her kids and pay off her mortgage, which she did. But, instead of supporting her, not only did her father throw her out, he’s also the reason the thugs stole her house. It’s Cristina’s dad and brother who owe those men money, but the pair plan to keep all the money they have, pull the rug from under Cristina’s feet, and run off to Guam. When Cristina shows up to her father’s house with her family of 3 kids and their paternal uncle (he has lived with them ever since his brother left Cristina), her father ends up having a stroke and passing away in that moment. Now, all Cristina needs is some money to go off on her own and give her 3 children a proper life, but she’s not mentioned in the will. So, how will she get the share she deserves? And will it truly be “Welcome To The Family” for her? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Why Does Cristina Get Arrested?
Welcome To The Family is a comedy of errors where people keep making mistakes, and they get progressively worse. Cristina knows her family, and she thinks that something will eventually go wrong, so she makes a plan with the lawyer (Luciana’s new lover) to smooth everything over if things go south. Cristina’s plan is to go to prison and leave her kids with Luciana because she knows they’ll be safe with her. Unfortunately, Mariano gets caught by Horacio, and he calls the lawyer. The lawyer then tells him Cristina’s plan, which is basically to admit that she hid the news about her father’s death and orchestrated everything herself. This would leave Luciana and the rest of her family safe, of course. This is the sacrifice she’s willing to make as a single mother to protect her kids, since they shouldn’t get in any kind of trouble.
But, ironically, even with everything that they planned out, Raul’s car was hit by Aldama’s, so he is the real one to blame here. Aldama and his gang show up at the house soon after Cristina’s arrest. They want everyone out so they can have the house to themselves. The family leaves, but they end up having a discussion about what they can do to save Cristina and get back the house. They can kill two birds with one stone, thanks to Luciana, who finally admits that she didn’t send the Mercedes down the cliff with the body of Raul and the random man from the funeral home; it was Aldama who hit the car from the back.
How Does Cristina Get Free?
Luciana and Jorge show off their acting skills when they go back and ask to enter the house to take the urns. They plan on taking the Hummer as proof because it has a dent in the front. But things don’t really go exactly as planned, and it starts to look a little bit like a Home Alone movie, only there are too many people at home. Luciana and Jorge hide the urns in the house to stall the men, but Luciana also steals a gun and starts to threaten the guys. Somehow Toto and Ines find time to get in each other’s pants here too and realize they only have the hots for each other when they feel like they’re close to dying.
Back at the station, Cristina explains everything to Horacio and his boss, who doesn’t seem to believe Cristina is a killer. Horacio tries to get a false confession out of Cristina to prove that he’s a great detective, all because he’s mad that she chose Moi over him. Cristina then uses this as leverage over him and tells his boss that he’s mad because they slept together once, and she didn’t like it (woot).
Back at home, Aldama gets Home Alone’d by the family, who make it seem like the house is haunted by Raul. Finally, Ines waxes his armpit to interrogate him about where the keys for the car are. Jana gets the key, and the family drives off to the station to get Aldama arrested. He’s in the back of the car, tied up. Ultimately, Luciana’s driving skills bring the family to the station unharmed (well, at least physically). Aldama is arrested, and Cristina is set free. She even pretends Horacio is a genius hero who caught the right guys and saved the day. Guess it’s her way of keeping the family safe from this lame police officer. The real evidence is a video of Benji and Mariano making a statement about how Aldama would be responsible if they ended up dead because they owed him money and Aldama was after them. In the video, Raul—well, Mariano—admits he loves Luciana, which makes it easy to leave the house in her name. Plus, they’ve got all the papers signed before this mess with Horacio began, anyway.
In Welcome To The Family’s ending, Benji is left with 13 dollars in the bank because the two ladies have kept all the money to themselves. On the other hand, Olga reaps what she sows, as she’s got a plaster cast all over her upper body and no book at hand because Horacio stole it. Cristina and Luciana get rid of Raul’s ashes down the toilet, where he belongs, and all is good. Cristina and the fam go back to their old house, now that Aldama is arrested, but it feels a little bit empty. Eventually, Cristina, Moi, and the 3 kids return to Raul’s house because, along with Luciana and Ines, they’re one big happy family. The show ends with everybody in a big happy family hug, a new beginning for a new family. In the end, both Cristina and Luciana will never be alone because they’ve got each other! A truly happy ending.
