Werewolves, starring Frank Grillo, is your typical B-grade horror with questionable performances and an illogical plot. It could’ve been entertaining even then, but somehow it just doesn’t work; maybe a little more gore and comedy would’ve made the cut. At the very beginning of Werewolves, we are told that the supermoon triggered a global crisis a year ago. Exposure to the moon resulted in humans turning into werewolves, and over a billion were affected. The condition lasted only for a night, but the destruction was irreversible. A cure was on the way, and it would be tested on the upcoming supermoon night. Citizens were warned to stay indoors and ensure they were not exposed to moonlight. After losing his brother, Sean, to the crisis the previous year, Wesley was determined to protect his sister-in-law, Lucy, and her daughter, Emma. From adding an electric fence to setting traps, Wesley prepped the house to ensure Lucy and Emma did not face any trouble. Wesley was the Global Rapid Response team leader and had to oversee the experiment for the cure, and he could not spend the night with his family. Will Lucy and Emma stay safe? Did the government find a cure? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Was the experiment a success?
Wesley was a member of the team undertaking the challenge of delivering a cure. The supermoon triggered rapid DNA mutation, and to suppress the mutation, a team of scientists developed a liquid called “moonscreen” that could potentially act as a barrier between the moonlight and human DNA. A few subjects who had transformed into werewolves a year ago had signed up for the experiment. The idea was to apply the moonscreen on the subjects and expose them to moonlight to determine if the liquid was useful. One of the subjects was scientist Amy’s partner, Myles. Before he entered the zone, Myles had asked Amy to always remember that he had volunteered for the experiment, and therefore she must not feel bad for him if things didn’t work out. The experiment commenced; subjects were sprayed with moonscreen and then exposed to moonlight. Everyone in the room was pleasantly surprised when they realized that the liquid was indeed effective. The subjects did not convert, and it seemed that the global crisis could be controlled.
Wesley studied the blood samples of the subjects, and he realized that the supermoon had triggered the immunological defense system in the subjects. Before Wesley could understand the problem at hand, the subjects started to transform into werewolves. They tried to spray them with moonscreen again, but it was already too late. The werewolves were extremely powerful, and they broke down the cages they were locked up in. Chaos ensued as the werewolves started attacking the scientists. Wesley and Amy managed to lock themselves in a room, but they realized that the chances of them surviving in the experimentation center were slim. They had to find their way home, so they sprayed the moonscreen on themselves. The formula would only last an hour, and they somehow had to make it home by then. Wesley and Amy made it to the parking lot, and they got in a car. On his way home, Wesley received a call from a panic-stricken Lucy. She informed Wesley that there were werewolves all around, and their neighbor, Reagan, had come to her house begging for help. Wesley specifically asked Lucy not to open the door. She felt devastated and helpless when she saw, with the help of her surveillance camera, a werewolf attack Reagan. Meanwhile, Wesley met with an accident, though luckily he and Amy survived the crash.
Did Wesley manage to make it home?
Lucy’s next-door neighbor Cory had turned into a werewolf and was responsible for attacking Reagan. Frustrated, Lucy sprayed water on Cory, hoping to keep him away. But her reaction triggered him all the more, and he and his pack tried to devise a plan to cross the electric fence. Meanwhile, Wesley and Amy had to find a way to return home before the moonscreen stopped working. Werewolves were roaming freely on the empty road, and in an attempt to escape, the duo entered the passage that led to a tunnel connecting the entire city.
At the underground passage, they encounter a secret cult that lived there. They initially refused to let Wesley and Amy through, but after they explained their situation, the cult leader agreed to show them the way to the tunnel. The existence of the underground cult felt very random and unnecessary. Nonetheless, Wesley and Amy managed to enter the tunnel, fight a werewolf, and find their way out. They ended up resting at a convenience store. The moonscreen had to be cooled to an optimum temperature for reapplication, and they had no choice but to wait for the temperature to drop. After reapplying the liquid, Wesley and Amy headed out, and they unexpectedly crossed paths with a militia who had taken the law into their hands to keep the werewolves away. Wesley and Amy tried to explain their situation, but the gang could not trust them. The situation escalated when more werewolves started to attack the gang members. Seeing no other option, Amy decided to lure the werewolves in her direction so that Wesley could shoot them down all at once. The plan was mostly a success. Wesley managed to get in a car, and Amy too was about to enter when all of a sudden a werewolf took her away. Wesley wanted to rescue Amy, but he knew it was a hopeless endeavor. He drove back home only to realize that the situation had turned critical there.
Why did Wesley make the ultimate sacrifice?
Lucy was determined to protect Emma even if it meant risking her own life. She had promised Sean before he passed away that she would always be brave and hold the fort down no matter what. The werewolves led by Cody had found a way to destroy the electric fence, and they were right at Lucy’s doorstep. She was ready with her shotgun, and she tried to shoot them down when they climbed her rooftop. But unfortunately, she missed her targets, and moonlight entered through the holes in the roof. When Wesley arrived, he rammed into the werewolves outside the house, and he managed to wound Cory. In the meantime, after she ran out of ammunition, Lucy and Emma together tackled a werewolf and killed it with an axe. Lucy, Emma, and Wesley assumed that they had handled the crisis, and in fifteen minutes it was going to be daylight, and the werewolves would turn into humans again. But they soon realized they were not out of trouble. They could hear Cory scream, and Wesley decided it was time he dealt with his neighbor. He had always detested Cory, and instead of shooting him down, Wesley wanted to fight him.
During Werewolves’ ending, Wesley exposed himself to moonlight and turned into a werewolf to fight Cory. The fight was brief, and it ended with Wesley holding Cory’s head aloft as a trophy. While it was a win for Wesley, it came at a cost. After he had turned into a werewolf, he couldn’t control his thirst for blood.
Did Wesley survive?
Wesley approached Lucy and Emma. Lucy refused to believe that the man who was ready to go to any length to protect his loved ones would kill his family. She tried to communicate with the man underneath the beastly exterior. She begged him to think of his brother, Sean; his niece, Emma; and how much he loved his family. But nothing she said stopped the werewolf from approaching her. Before turning into a werewolf, Wesley had advised Lucy to shoot him dead if he ever posed a threat to her and her child. Lucy had her gun pointed at Wesley, but she could not find the courage to pull the trigger.
In Werewolves’ ending, the alarm on Lucy’s watch that Wesley had handed her, started to go off; it marked the end of moonlight. Instead of using her final bullet to kill Wesley, she shot at the window to create a hole, and daylight entered through it. Within seconds, Wesley turned back into his human form, and Lucy and Emma breathed a sigh of relief. Lucy protected her family as she had promised, and somehow the timing worked perfectly. In the future, we can assume that the moonscreen will be distributed en masse, and everyone will be expected to apply the liquid every hour to protect themselves from the supermoon. The only issue here is that moonscreen provides a temporary solution to a permanent problem, and therefore scientists and other humans have to come up with some new kind of vaccine or built infrastructure to shield them from the effects of the supermoon. They could also “nuke” the moon, if anyone is crazy among them to think of that. Well, if you too have any crazy ideas in thy head, do share with us in the comment below.
