Wolf King Season 2’s ending was about Drew falling to his death and Prince Lucas being put on the throne of Lyssia by the werelord of Bast, Orsino, and Lord Vanmorten. How did things come to this? In the first episode of the show, Gretchen was kidnapped by Lucas, with the help of Vankaskan and a pretty spirited trooper of King Leopold’s army. Thanks to Hector’s necromancy powers, Drew and Whitley learned that Lucas was headed south with Gretchen. So, that’s the direction in which they headed in order to rescue the Rose of Hedgemoor. En route, they came across Baron Ewan, Count Kesslar, Broghan, Conrad, Orsino, and even Trent. In the meantime, King Leopold, with some help from Lord Vanmorten, maintained his control over Highcliff by keeping Duke Manfred, Earl Mikkel, Duke Bergan, Queen Amelie, Count Vega, and Hector on the back foot. While Vankaskan held Drew captive, and Duke Bergan stormed the Keep of Highcliff to take down Leopold, the Catlords of Bast moved in on Lyssia to support Leopold and kill all those who were against him. As Drew and his surviving friends tried their best to one-up Vankaskan at the Cape Gala, Bergan had to ensure that he and his people survived the wrath of Leopold, Lord Orsino, and the Catlords at Highcliff. Who succeeded and who failed? And will there be a Season 3 to resolve the dangling plot threads? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Drew’s Confession
When Drew regained consciousness after being incapacitated by Baron Ewan, he found himself being held captive by Vankaskan with the help of special silver handcuffs and a zombified Broghan. After Broghan’s death at the hands of Lucas, Vankaskan turned him into a zombie in order to torment Drew and make him write a (fake) confession that he wasn’t actually the son of Wergar. If Drew refused to sign, Vankaskan said that every town and city, from Motley to Brackenholme, that was loyal to him would burn. If he did what was asked of him, then he would be spared. What was the guarantee of that? Drew would just have to trust that what Vankaskan was promising would come to pass. Drew knew that Vankaskan was a liar and his word was worth nothing. Hence, he refused to sign the confession. That’s when Vankaskan revealed that he had Trent in his custody, and claimed that Drew would have to watch his foster brother die at the hands of the zombified Broghan if he refused to comply. Since Drew and Trent’s bond had recently been rebuilt after the confusion about Drew killing Tilly, he didn’t want his foster brother to die.
As Drew mulled over his decision, we briefly saw Hector, who was dealing with his newfound powers, where he could control the dark spirit of his dead brother Vincent, waking up from a nightmare and being calmed down by Vega. After evacuating Lyssia, Vega was taking Hector and the rest of the survivors to the Cluster Isles to recuperate and strategize. Hector wasn’t okay with that because he felt like he was abandoning Drew. Vega explained that going to Drew would be a bad gamble; all they could do was hope that Drew would hold his own in these trying times. Going back to Drew, albeit reluctantly, he signed the confession that he had no claim to the throne of Lyssia. However, before Vankaskan could take the confession and show it to the world, Drew snatched the paper away and demanded that Vankaskan let him and Trent go first. In retaliation, Vankaskan unleashed the zombified Broghan again and unleashed it upon Trent. A frustrated Drew crumpled up the confession and threw it into a fire pit. This angered Vankaskan even more, and he set all the people that he had zombified upon Drew.
Gretchen’s Rescue Mission
On the banks of Cape Gala, Whitley and Gretchen, who had also been put in a trance by Baron Ewan, regained consciousness and were immediately abducted and taken to Baba Korga, whose people, the Romari, stayed right outside the walls of Cape Gala. Drew and Whitley had run into Baba Korga before. Hence, Whitley was glad to see another familiar face in these tumultuous times. She was even more overjoyed when she learned that Baba Korga had kept Chancer, her horse, safe and well-fed all this while. But all these happy feelings turned bitter due to Baron Ewan and Conrad’s presence in that settlement. Conrad tried to explain that they had to bend their knee to Lucas and Orsino in order to save the people of Haggard and Cape Gala, but Gretchen wasn’t in the mood to listen to excuses from traitors. They seemed apologetic about betraying Drew; however, that wasn’t enough; they had to prove through their actions that they were the “good guys.”
Gretchen and Whitley pointed out that Drew was still being held captive in a tower on the palace grounds. If Ewan and Conrad would help the girls rescue him, then maybe their mistakes could be pardoned. Ewan and Conrad accepted the proposal and chalked up a plan to storm the castle. As Gretchen, Whitley, Conrad, Ewan, and their soldiers made their way up the stairs of the tower that Drew was being held in, Drew was able to break free of his silver cuffs by getting the zombified Broghan to strike them with the axe that Vankaskan had thrown into the mix to “make things interesting.” Yeah, he lost his left hand in the process, but at least he was free. Drew then transformed into a werewolf and re-killed Broghan to put him out of his misery. In the meantime, Whitley managed to open the elevator shaft to the room in the tower where Drew was fighting Vankaskan’s zombies.
Leopold Died
As Whitley, Gretchen, Conrad, and the rest boarded the escalator, the tower began to collapse, because Drew’s fight with the zombies had set the whole room ablaze. This chaos caused the zombies to actually turn against Vankaskan and kill him. While that was certainly a relief, the burning wreckage of the building prevented Drew from getting to Trent. On top of that, the zombies were still active, and in order to distract them from Trent, Drew decided to attract their attention and draw them into the waters at the bottom of the tower. With no other option left, Trent took the sword of Wergar and used the escape hatch to get out of the burning room. Whitley, Gretchen, Conrad, and the rest reached the top of the tower, but they were too late because Drew had already taken the plunge to save Trent. That said, Drew didn’t hit the water because he was picked up by Kesslar’s avian friend and delivered to his ship. Kesslar said that Drew now belonged to him and he’d never see the face of Lyssia.
Drew said that, by hook or by crook, he’d get back to his friends and family, even if it meant killing everyone who stood in his way. Hector, even though he was far away from Drew, sensed this event. As he looked down at his hands, he saw that the black mark on his palm that was caused by his rampant use of black magic was fading a little. At the end of Wolf King Season 2, Orsino delivered Lucas to Highcliff and advised him to do a better job of ruling over Lyssia than his father did. Upon entering the throne room, Leopold greeted them with enthusiasm. However, enthusiasm turned into dread as Vanmorten held Leopold so that Lucas could stab him. Orsino then proceeded to put the crown on Lucas’ head and, evoking that iconic scene from The Lion King, said, “Long live the king.” So, what does this all mean?
Season 3 Expectations
Well, Kesslar is going to Scoria, which is home to the Werelizards. Their primary mode of earning is gladiator fights. Therefore, I suppose Kesslar wants to earn a lot of money by having Drew fight for him. Of course, Drew isn’t as pliable as Kesslar wants him to be, and he’ll stop at nothing until he can return to Lyssia. Hence, I feel that Kesslar will give Drew a proposal: earn enough money for the Count, and he’ll set the rightful ruler of Lyssia free. Of course, Drew will realize that that’s a big fat lie, and he’ll script a coup and try to return to his home. As for Hector, the fading mark on his hand probably means that he is losing his powers, or maybe his powers are evolving. And coming to Lucas, with Orsino and Vanmorten by his side, he’s probably going to turn Highcliff into a hellscape until the lands are freed from his clutches by Drew and his allies, who are scattered all over the Seven Realms now.
Let’s answer the big question, though: will we get to see any of this stuff in a potential Season 3 of Wolf King? According to an official report from August, Season 2 was the final season of the show. What’s the reason behind that? I suppose the viewership numbers aren’t that great. So, yeah, we’ll all have to digest the fact that these plot threads will never get resolved. The books exist; you can read those if you want to. The show was produced by Lime Pictures. If some other streaming platform decides to continue these storylines, then there’s hope. However, I’d advise you not to expect such a miracle and just move on. Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the second and final season of Wolf King. What are your opinions on the same? Let me know in the comments section below.
