‘Woman Of The Dead’ Season 2 Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Badal Sarkissian Dead?

Published

The ending of Woman of the Dead season 2 ultimately revealed that the pen-drive the nefarious contractor Badal Sarkissian had been looking for contained a video of gubernatorial candidate Richard Lange. [Spoiler Alert] So, the truth was, Lange, just like the rest of the vicious men in Tyrol, enjoyed watching/making snuff films of innocent women, and Johanna Schonborn’s dead son, Edwin, had one of his videos on his laptop. When Johanna found out that Lange was running for governor, she took Lange’s video from her son’s laptop and started blackmailing Lange anonymously. Lange knew the clip with his face in it could not only jeopardize his political career but also start an official investigation against him from which there would be no escape. This was the reason why Lange requested Badal to find his blackmailer, and Badal hired a professional hitman named Brynner to find Edwin’s pen-drive. Now, Badal believed that it was Blum who had the clip in her possession, which was why Badal kidnapped Blum’s daughter, Nela, and threatened the mother to hand over the clip. But because Blum literally had no idea which video Badal was talking about, she decided to save her daughter on her own. And in the end, she did save her family, but it all came at a cost.

Birgit Wallner Died Saving Nela

Throughout the Woman of the Dead season 2 finale, Blum had been trying to locate her daughter, but she couldn’t find any trace of her. A helpless mother finally took help from officer Wallner from the BKA, who had recently been suspended for killing a corrupt officer, Daniel Lambert, working for Badal. In season 2’s ending, Wallner was convinced that Badal had connections in high places, and she wouldn’t be able to make a lawful arrest, which was why she decided to help Blum find her daughter so she could at least save an innocent life. The two women abducted Badal from his house and, while going through some documents, Wallner came across a purchase agreement between Badal and Richard Lange. As per the document, Lange had purchased a building that was paid for with Badal’s money, and it didn’t take her long to connect the dots and work out that Badal and Lange might be using the very same premise for recording snuff films. Blum and Birgit, with Badal in custody, quickly arrived at Lange’s old estate in Telfs, but before they could find Nela, Badal’s hitman, Brynner, arrived at the scene and rescued his boss. He later opened fire on the two women, and Birgit lost her life trying to stop the cold-blooded assassin. Yes, in the end both Birgit and Brynner died.

Meanwhile, Blum reached the dungeon where Badal’s man, Damian, had kept Nela and was going to record her snuff video. As soon as Blum saw her daughter strapped to a chair, she tried to rescue her, but both Damian and Badal pointed guns at her. Well, Reza Shadid, Blum’s assistant and a potential love interest, had been teaching his boss some self-defense skills, and Blum put them to work against Damian and took his gun to shoot him, but Badal stabbed her in the gut. This was the moment when Nela kicked Badal, and Blum accidentally fired a shot that left a mark on his face and ear. Badal was down for the time being, and Blum used the opportunity to escape with Nela, but she couldn’t get far. While leaving the estate, Badal attacked her again and was going to finally put an end to her when Nela attacked him with a metal rod and knocked him down.

In Woman of the Dead season 2’s ending, Blum, even though she’d been stabbed and was bleeding nonstop, gathered enough strength to smash Badal’s brains out and kill him on the spot so he wouldn’t dare hurt her children again. The final news report didn’t mention anything about Badal’s death, though it could be speculated that police dropped all charges against Blum and ruled Badal’s killing as an act of self-defense.

Richard Lange Died By Suicide

Before her death, Birgit had shared her location with her senior, Wilhelm Danzberger, who quickly arrived at the old estate to investigate the crime scene. It could be surmised that, after finding 3 dead bodies, including an officer’s, Danzberger might have decided to search the entire premise and, likely with K-9 support, came across 3 more dead bodies. The police dug up the corpses of 3 young women buried beneath the pool in Richard’s yard. They believed that these 3 women were victims of a human-trafficking ring run by Richard’s friend, Badal, who might have sent these girls to the estate so Richard could satisfy his darkest desires, and in the end he killed these 3 women while recording them on camera. This was the same clip that Johanna found on her son’s laptop. Richard knew what was coming for him, and before he could be questioned or taken into custody, he pulled his gun out of his locker and shot himself.

Johanna Will Run For Election

The ending of Woman of the Dead season 1 explained that the reason why Johanna joined hands with such a corrupt individual like Badal was because she needed investment to expand her company, Bad Annenhof. As soon as Badal’s construction company, Yar Group, came on board, Johanna added nearly 50 miles of slopes to her resorts and also built five new hotels. However, the company wanted to cut down two forests for their luxury projects, because of which they faced massive backlash from environmentalists. The government put a stop to the construction, and Johanna tried to use all her resources to get a permit, but she couldn’t. The shareholders were getting restless, and Badal tried to leverage the situation to take over the company started by Johanna’s father. She wanted the permits as quickly as possible, but Richard Lange couldn’t give them to her until he had won the elections. I think Johanna knew that Lange couldn’t be trusted, and that once the man became governor, he would use his power to destroy her father’s company and give it all to his close friend, Badal. This could be the reason why Johanna sent the video to Richard Lange and started blackmailing him to keep the man in check. Later, on the day of his victory, Johanna subtly hinted to him that she had his video in her possession and wouldn’t mind sharing it with the media if he delayed her permits any longer. Unfortunately, before Johanna could take advantage of the evidence, the police found the bodies on the estate, and in the heat of the moment, Lange took his life.

Before his death, Lange had casually told Johanna that he wouldn’t have a chance in the election if she would have run too. Well, it turned out Johanna took Lange’s joke to heart and, in season 2’s ending, told her manager, Thomas Behringer, that she was planning to fill Lange’s vacant seat. But you might be wondering how she could be running for governor while being the CEO of such a huge corporation. Well, Johanna had previously shown a keen interest in Thomas, insinuating that, after her lover, Bertl Puch’s, death, she needed someone by her side, and she wanted Thomas to fill the void. She wanted him not only to be her man but also her company’s heir, to look after her father’s business after she had left the board. In short, Johanna’s story doesn’t really end with season 2, and we can expect her and Thomas to return for Woman of the Dead season 3, if it ever happens.

Nela Started Talking To The  Dead

From a very young age, Blum had seen her small village as a cold prison that clipped her wings. She was adopted by a couple who ran a funeral home in the village, but soon realized how evil they were. They used to lock Blum in a coffin when she refused to touch the corpses in their funeral parlor. With time, Blum started speaking with the dead and made peace with the fact that it was all she was destined to do in her life. The whole episode traumatized her to the core, and Blum didn’t want her children to suffer the same. But the second season suggested that Nela might have fallen into the same abyss.

When Blum’s young daughter was locked in one of the shipping containers, along with other victims of the human trafficking ring, she witnessed the death of a young woman whom she imagined talking to her. It was quite similar to how Blum had spoken to the dead in her imagination, and Nela repeating the same act suggested that the death of a victim had taken a toll on her mental health, and she was slowly turning into her mother. Maybe, after Blum’s death in season 3, Nela would take on her mother’s mantle and end up running the funeral home.

Blum Didn’t Want Her Children To Come Back

In the closing shot of Woman of the Dead season 2, Nela’s lover and Johanna’s nephew, Alex Schonborn, told Nela that if she still wanted to go away after their graduation, then he would come with her. Nela had sent photos of New Zealand to Alex and asked him if he would come with her. At that time, Alex hadn’t shown any interest, as he had his apprenticeship with his aunt, but after the whole fiasco, Alex told her aunt quite clearly that he didn’t want anything to do with a person who would go to any length to serve their own interests. He didn’t want to be her heir anymore, and left his apprenticeship behind. But even though Alex didn’t have any ties left to the village, the kidnapping incident changed something in Nela, who didn’t want to leave her mother’s side anymore. She told Alex that she was going to need to be at home, suggesting she hasn’t made her mind up about leaving the village, even though her mother wanted her to go away for her own safety. Blum didn’t want her son, Tim, and her daughter, Nela, to face the consequences of her actions. Her entire crusade had put her children’s lives in danger. I guess, in season 3, Blum would be left with no other option than to literally force her children to leave, never to return. This might be the only way to protect her children from her own dark shadow.

Maybe both Alex and Nela would stick around till their graduation and might finally take a decision in season 3 to leave their hometown for good. In season 3, we can also expect Blum to start a romantic relationship with her assistant, Reza, as both had feelings for each other, though they haven’t been very outspoken about it. Also, it was quite a nice touch in the closing shot, where we saw Blum sitting in a wheelchair and surrounded by all the graves around her, implying that she was cursed to be the woman of the dead and might never be able to escape her fate, though her children can, and that’s what she will work towards in the next season.
