‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3 Episode 8 Recap & Ending Explained: Wait, Who’s Alive?

Published

We already knew the Yellowjackets were an unhinged group of girls, even back in the day, and of course, that’s true of those who’ve survived so far. But there is one person who progressively seems to be losing her mind both in the past timeline and the present one, which goes to show that not much has changed since the plane crash, eh? I guess our formative years do really define us as people. But yeah, the person I’m referring to is none other than our lady Shauna. I don’t know about you, but to me, grown-up Shauna’s always seemed, like, put together? Sure, we knew that Jackie haunted her, but it seemed for the most part she had everything sorted out, but I guess seeing how she killed her lover, or even had one (whoops), she might’ve been heading down this path already. The show really focuses on Shauna this season, and as it’s coming to an end, with just two episodes remaining, we’re finally seeing her completely unravel, and I, for one, am excited to see where this goes. However, I’m also a little bit confused, in the way that Yellowjackets makes you confused. But with that said, let’s jump into episode 8 of season 3.

Spoiler Alert

Do The Girls Get Rescued?

Episode 8 begins with Shauna having a vision with Jackie in it. In the vision, Jackie is buying groceries, and Shauna is behind the counter. She wonders if this is what her life is going to look like. She then tells Jackie that she doesn’t like being called Shipman, and that the whole thing feels a little bit off. Finally, Shauna looks up at the light, and there’s a bunch of moths all drawn to it. I suppose, in a way, this is a sign for Shauna that whatever’s happening next is a mistake. If the girls are the moths, the research team is the light that they’re being drawn towards, but is that going to do them any good?

Akilah and Travis follow Kodi, who is meant to rescue them. Travis’ plan is that if they can get out, they can send somebody back to save the girls. Akilah doesn’t like the plan, but she goes along with it anyway, leaving behind a trail of fabric pieces for the girls to find. Remember how Misty got left behind and lost her glasses? Well, she finds her glasses, notices this trail, and follows it a little bit. Realizing what it is, she returns to the camp to tell the girls excitedly. In the meantime, the girls have been trying to figure out what to do with Hannah. They learn that she can’t help them because she doesn’t know where she is, but Kodi can. Misty tells the girls she’s figured out where Akilah, Travis and Kodi are. Akilah pretends there’s something stuck in her shoe before the entire gang gorilla jumpscares Kodi. Even Travis turns on him, probably out of fear, and they all go back to camp. While Natalie is determined to find her way back to  civilization through these two people, Misty worries that they’ll tell on them when they get back to the “real” world.

Much to Shauna’s distaste, Natalie takes charge by herself with the rescue stuff. She tells the group to pack as much as they can and prepare food and such for 6 days. While packing, we see Man With No Eyes by Tai’s side while she tells Van that they need to kill Hannah and Kodi because they will ruin their lives forever. Shauna and Melissa have a bit of a fight because Melissa thinks Shauna doesn’t care for her after everything that went down with the arrow in her shoulder and all that. But Shauna get the situation under control before she notices a moth over Melissa’s head and gets an eerie feeling. Nat says goodbye to Ben by leaving his whistle in the remains of the plane before noticing some sort of Wilderness sounds. I suppose she thinks it’s a sign that they’re not meant to leave, but she braves the challenge and tells whatever it is that she’s talking to that they’re going to get out of there and leave it behind, no matter what.

Finally, when it’s time to leave, though, Lottie decides she’s going to stay back. Just a little while earlier, she noticed that Akilah had a weird vision where all the animals died. A bad feeling about everything that’s happening. Seeing Lottie, Tai says she’s been feeling the same thing and won’t go either. But, from what Lottie tells Nat, it becomes pretty obvious that the reason the girls feel so connected with the wild is because they’ve always been eager to step away from their lives in the real world. Lottie basically says she’s afraid of being considered “unwell” when she goes back, and she won’t get to be her free self back there. She also reminds Nat that she doesn’t really have a “home” back in the city. I think this makes it pretty clear that this is all a psychological problem. Anyway, Shauna also says she’s been having a weird feeling and will stay back. But instead of just the 3 of them staying back, she says the rest of the girls can’t go either. Now, I really don’t know what to make of this, because the majority is on Nat’s side at the moment, how will she stop them? She doesn’t have that much power over them, does she?

Who Does Shauna Find At Alex’s?

In the present timeline, Shauna sneaks into the house that she believes is Hanna’s daughter, Alex’s. But it isn’t just Alex who lives there but her wife, and you’re not going to believe this, Melissa too! Now, I was thinking Hilary Swank would be Alex, but she plays Melissa, and I guess we saw a bit of a resemblance there. Anyway, so Melissa’s alive and well and happy with her wife and child, what? After Alex and the child leave, Melissa, who goes by Kelly now, tells the person hiding in her house to come out because she’s still got the “Yellowjackets” instincts. Shauna shows up, and Melissa is a little bit shocked, but she did send her the tape, so I have a feeling she might’ve known it was Shauna in the house. Since Melissa has a knife in her hand, Shauna grabs one too, and they look like they’re about to go at each other, but instead they just grab two chairs by the table to talk. First thing, it seems Melissa had left a suicide note back in the day, which means she never “died” in the wilderness; hence, she can be presently alive without the gang knowing. I have a feeling some of the other girls might’ve survived in a similar manner, but we’ll just have to wait and find out, I guess.

Meanwhile, Misty tells Shauna she better come back to the hospital. Guess she’s figured out where she’s gone. In the meantime, Tai tries to kill an already dying man to save Van, who needs to be sent to hospice because she’s basically dying herself. At the last moment, Tai, who holds a pillow in her hands over the man’s face, can’t do it, but the man’s vitals begin to fade anyway. Misty also calls Jeff to find out if Shauna’s back with them, which makes him worried.

Melissa tells Shauna that she sent her the tape because she felt guilty. It turns out Hannah had told her where to find it and to give it to Alex if she ever got out. At first, Melissa only kept an eye on Alex, but then one day they ended up meeting, and as you can imagine, one thing led to another, so they’re now a happy, “normal” family. It turns out Melissa did send Shauna the tape, but Shauna blames her for everything else that’s happened to her in the recent past. Melissa basically tells Shauna that she’s paranoid and that all of the things that happened to her have reasonable explanations, which of course irks Shauna even more. So I guess we’re getting closer to the theory that the girls simply imagined things back in the day. Also, yes, Shauna does admit they killed Hannah, but why and how, we will have to wait to find out. Maybe she is Pit Girl.

What Happens With Tai At The Hospital?

On the other hand, Jeff and Callie have some time together and, in their father-daughter moment, they find a common ground, not trusting Shauna. Callie and Jeff both admit that they believe whatever Shauna did in the wilderness really messed her up, which is why she thinks that there’s a connection between Lottie’s death and them. Jess and Callie decide to go back home. They also come by the Joels while they’re there, and the first time around, Jeff comes back with his tail between his legs. But, after his discussion with Callie, he tells the Joels confidently that his wife is insane, and she might not have been diagnosed, but she needs help. He also says that he appreciates being with an unhinged woman and muses that the Joels have probably been with boring women, which stirs them up a bit. Without sucking up to them, Jeff tells Callie that it’s time for them to leave and they just walk away, Callie giddy with excitement.

Meanwhile, Tai gets split into two again; this time, we can see both personalities in physical form facing each other. The “real” Tai is outside the door to Van’s room and the, well, scary Tai is the one inside the room. Scary Tai tells real Tai that she never believed, which is why she had to show up to do what’s best for Van.

At the end of episode 8 of Yellowjackets season 3, Shauna and Melissa get into a physical fight because Melissa clearly knows that Shauna has some issues and tries to nick her. It all backfires on her because Shauna puts her on the floor and takes a big bite of her arm, pulling out some skin. But that isn’t the end of it all; she then tells Mellissa to eat her flesh and threatens to tell her family who she really is if she doesn’t (yikes, Shauna!). So, yeah, guess we’ve got some crazy stuff coming our way soon enough. Also, I think Hannah’s going to die accidentally, and it’ll be Kodi’s fault because he probably thinks being around little girls isn’t a big deal, and he can finagle his way out of whatever they’re planning. I don’t know, it’s just a feeling I’ve got.
