‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3 Finale Ending Explained: What To Expect In Season 4?

Published

Yellowjackets season 3’s ending is a grotesque exposition piece of what really went down in the woods back in the day. In the finale of the 3rd season, it looks like the baton has been passed from Shauna to Misty, and she might become the central character of the fourth season. Also, yes, we finally have the answer to who Pit Girl is, and it’s safe to say we were pretty bang on in making that educated guess. On the other hand, whatever’s going on with Travis needs to be thoroughly explored next season, because man was basically just here to show Lottie she’s not what she thinks she is in season 3. But, most importantly, we finally know how the “Yellowjackets” might have made it out of the woods during that final winter. With all that said though, let’s jump straight into the ending of Yellowjackets season 3 and what we can expect from season 4.

Spoiler Alert

Who Killed Lottie?

The main question left unanswered in all of season 3 was “Who killed Lottie?” We believed it might’ve been an accident, and then we thought it could’ve been Shauna, but in truth, it was Callie, and this is what Misty discovered while she was with Walter. Misty tells Callie to confess to her and to tell Jeff what’s happened. Of course, she doesn’t go to the authorities, but this leaves Jeff in a complicated situation. Callie went to see Lottie because she knew she stole the tape, but when Callie arrived, Lottie was waiting for her. It seems Lottie’s been waiting for Callie for 25 years. This kind of implies that Lottie thinks Callie could be their new queen? Lottie tells Callie that the Wilderness took away their baby, i.e., Shauna’s baby, and then gave them Callie, which means she can feel the force inside of her. Lottie believes Callie is the baby of the Wilderness, which is why she can lead them to the dark side again. I’m not entirely sure, but it seems Lottie had a message for Callie, but she couldn’t really give it to her properly before Callie pushed her off the stairs in fear.

Now, Lottie told Callie that Shauna was jealous, which is why she couldn’t give her enough love. Callie goes home and asks her dad if she’s as messed up as her mom, and he says no, and that he should’ve protected her from Shauna. In the other timeline, it is revealed that Akilah killed the wild game on purpose so they could play the card game again. She did this under Lottie’s influence because Lottie made her believe she could see the future, but she basically made her vision come true. Also, Travis says some cryptic things to Shauna before the hunt begins. He says that they’re not in their reality, but the reality of those who are dead and gone? He says most of his thoughts are Jackie’s, about jealousy and slumber parties. So what Travis seems to be implying here is that, since they’ve been eating the people, they’ve been thinking like them too? Of course, it seems on the surface that it’s his guilt talking. There’s always an explanation with the “Yellowjackets,” but should we really believe there’s something supernatural at play here?

Who Is Pit Girl?

Yellowjackets season 3 finale reveals who Pit Girl is, and it’s none other than Mari. When they decide to go on a hunt again, Tai tells Van to rig the game so that Hannah is the one who gets the queen card. Van does it, but Shauna notices that there’s something going on between Van and Tai, so she steps in the middle of the order, making Mari the one who gets the queen card because she’s one before Hannah. As the hunt is about to begin, Shauna looks delighted, and Lottie starts the countdown. Before running off, Mari says to Shauna that she deserves what’s coming for her. Maybe she’s referring to the winter, or maybe just a future of trauma.

Mari runs off, but something seems off to Shauna, so she tells Tai to stick with her, but Gen splits them up, saying Van’s hurt herself. In this time, Melissa finds Shauna and nearly strangles her to death because she’s furious about everything that’s gone down. Of course, she gives up in the end because they hear the death whistle. In truth, Gen wants Mari to be safe because they’re friends. But unfortunately, it doesn’t work out, and though Mari crashes into Lottie, the latter doesn’t stop her, because Mari runs straight into the pit and falls directly onto the spikes inside it, of course. Shauna then tells the girls to prepare the feast, but specifically Natalie to cut up the body, after Mari’s hoisted naked like actual game by the legs, hanging off a tree. At the feast, Shauna is made the antler queen, and everyone eats Mari. Earlier, Lottie was hoping to sacrifice herself to the Wilderness. This is when Akilah meets her at the cave and tries to get her to realize this is all wrong, but she still truly believes in the Wilderness.

Where is Natalie?

The thing is, on the hunt, all the girls have their faces covered, so what nobody notices is that Hannah and Natalie have switched gear, because Hannah actually does want to get out of there and only sided with Shauna to stay alive. So, in the forest blanketed by snow, Natalie gets as high up as possible to get the scientist’s phone to work. On the other hand, Misty smiles a wicked smile when Shauan asks everyone where Natalie is. I don’t really think this is something to smile about. Natalie just wants to get them out, but I guess Misty’s happy to see Shauna being defeated.

In Yellowjackets season 3’s ending, Natalie manages to get through to civilization, finally being able to get someone to save them. I’m honestly not sure what went wrong and why Shauna is looking for answers from Natalie before she learns that she’s gone, because it looked like their feast went pretty well, with her becoming the antler queen and all that. Maybe she’s just talking about how Mari fell into the pit rather than getting killed by any of the girls themselves. But, in the present-day timeline, we see a completely different side of Shauna. We finally see her break down and become vulnerable for once. I think more than being upset about Jeff and Callie wanting space from her, Shauna’s upset because they know the truth. Shauna finds the letter that had fallen out of the tape bag, so it’s presumably from Melissa, and basically says that the writer doesn’t know if Shauna can forgive herself for what happened in the woods but that they have evidence of murder and everything that happened in the woods. Shauna’s final note to self is that she’s now going to remember everything that happened back then because it will remind her that she was a queen and warrior, not a wife and mom (yikes).

What Can We Expect in Season 4?

For one, we saw Tai and Misty team up against Shauna because Tai believes Shauna’s actually crazy and needs to be stopped. They decide together that they don’t want her to be the last one standing. This means war for Tai, Misty, and Shauna. While we still need answers for the rest of the girls, like Akilah, Gen, and even Hannah, who have not been accounted for in the adult world, there’s a chance we’ll be more focused on the present-day timeline from now on rather than the woods one. Additionally, I have a feeling that Akilah is still alive, but I could be wrong.

On the other hand, we still don’t know what Walter is up to. Is he related to one of the other “Yellowjackets?” Does he have some animosity towards the girls from before they crashed? Will he be the big villain of the next season? Why is he so fascinated by Misty? Also, is he tracking her? Because, how did he find her catching up with Tai? Or has Misty finally teamed up with him? There’s just so much to figure out here. We definitely need a lot more answers about Walter in season 4.

Most importantly, Melissa’s going to be a big part of the next season because she was barely in this one, and she killed Van on purpose, so whatever’s going on in her head is going to lead her to make some crazy decisions for sure. I wonder if she’ll team up with Shauna after all this time. Lastly, we know that Callie has killed Lottie. Does this mean she’s actually going to start acting on her darker impulses from now on? Does Callie really have the answers like Lottie said she did? What if she can save the rest of them? Maybe she’ll be the last one standing.
