‘Just Alice’ Ending Explained: Will There Be A Season 2?

Published

Living a dual life wasn’t easy for Alicia, but she refused to give up on the two men she’d fallen in love with. Netflix’s Colombian show, Just Alice, is the story of a woman who struggled to choose between her two lovers, a writer and a priest, and the incredible lengths she goes to to make both the marriages work. She ran into Alejo six years ago, and within a few hours of spending time with one another, they knew that they were meant to be together. Alejo discovered his romantic side when Alicia came into his life, and he became more attentive and less distant than he used to be before. Pablo was the man Alicia fell head over heels for when she met him during a brief trip to Cartagena. Although they’d only spend a night together, it was memorable. Alicia hated the fact that Pablo left the next morning without saying a word, and when she crossed paths with him again six years later, there was an immediate spark between the two. Pablo regretted how he left things the last time they met. He was confused at the time, because he’d chosen to dedicate himself to the Almighty, but he knew that what he shared with Alicia was special. Alicia couldn’t choose between two pastries, so when it came to men, you can already imagine her confusion! So, she decided to do something brave, be with both the men, and live a fulfilling life. But did her plan last long? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Did Pablo and Alejo forgive Alicia?

Alicia tried her best to keep a distance between Pablo and Alejo, but that soon became almost impossible. After giving up on priesthood to marry Alicia, Pablo dedicated his life to uplifting his neighborhood through his foundation. He strongly protested against presidential candidate Marcelo, who had announced plans to build a metro by displacing the people living in his neighborhood. Alejo was impressed by the young man’s courage, and he considered working on a book about him. So naturally, Pablo and Alejo crossed paths more than once, and they were aware of each other. Pablo had no clue that Alicia had been working as the head of campaign advertising for Marcelo. He thought Alicia was a stewardess, and she didn’t ever correct him. She instead bought the uniform of an airline stewardess and stuck with the role. So not only did Alicia have to juggle the two lives she’d built, but she also had to lie at work because Marcelo expected her to find dirt on Pablo, but she loved him, and there was no way she would allow Marcelo to destroy him. Soon, Marcelo found out about Alicia’s secret, and that allowed him to constantly pressure Alicia into doing things she wasn’t comfortable with. She didn’t believe in Marcelo’s vision, and she had always been in support of Pablo’s foundation. Working for Marcelo meant going against her principles, and although she knew it wasn’t fair, she believed she didn’t have a choice.

Things got all the more complicated when Alicia discovered that she was pregnant. She realized the situation had snowballed beyond her control, and she had to confess the truth to both her husbands. She feared losing Pablo and Alejo, but she couldn’t live with the lie anymore, and there was no way she could completely ignore the mess she was in. She invited Pablo and Alejo to the garage that she regularly visited to park her car and change clothes. Whenever she met Pablo, she wore the stewardess uniform, and she changed back to her work outfit when she went home to Alejo. She hoped her lovers would understand her dilemma instead of shaming her for the radical decisions she’d made. But of course, it wasn’t easy for Pablo and Alejo to come to terms with the truth. They both loved her, but they never in their wildest dreams thought that Alicia was a bigamist.

Both Pablo and Alejo refused to accept Alicia immediately. She had mentioned that she didn’t feel the need to find out who the father of the child was, because she wanted her baby to grow up with two fathers. But that was not enough reason for Pablo and Alejo to forgive Alicia for cheating on them. What she’d been fearing had come true—her lovers walked away from her the moment she came clean. Alicia stopped byAlejo’s apartment; she hoped they could have a conversation, setting aside his anger, but Alejo was clearly not in the position to do so. Alejo ordered Alicia to leave, but suddenly he noticed blood trickling down her legs. He regretted behaving roughly with Alicia, and he begged her to rest. He called a doctor to ensure she was doing alright, and in the meantime Pablo showed up at his apartment. Susana, Alicia’s best friend, had contacted him since she thought he too deserved to know about Alicia’s condition. The doctor revealed that Alicia was carrying twins, and both Pablo and Alejo were overjoyed. They hadn’t thought they could stand to be in the same room, but the joy of becoming parents brought them together. Pablo and Alejo tried to understand the two different versions of Alicia that they fell in love with, and they became more respectful of each other. They shared a drink, and they realized that they both had been great partners to Alicia, and the one lesson that they’d deduced from the situation was to learn to share love. Pablo and Alejo forgave Alicia, although they weren’t entirely sure how they would go about the situation.

Did Alicia, Pablo, and Alejo end up together?

Pablo and Alejo weren’t ready to move in with Alicia. While they loved and supported her, their expectation from romantic relationships wasn’t the same as Alicia’s. Alejo was in debt, and he realized he wasn’t in any position to continue writing anymore, so he decided to accept a job he was offered in New York. Pablo too had come to the realization that he had always wanted to become a priest, and he wasn’t ready to abandon his dream. He wanted to serve his community, and that was all that really mattered to him. Alicia’s personal life had pretty much become a public discussion. Her mother, Veronica, was a diplomat, Alicia had also been working closely with Marcela, and both her husbands were public figures, so naturally the media was a little too keen about Alicia’s life. So, Alicia decided to sit down for a television interview; for some reason the nation was invested in whom Alicia would choose to be with in the end.

During Just Alice’s ending, Alicia announced that she had decided to be with herself and her children (this didn’t come as a surprise, considering how formulaic the show is). She loved both her husbands, but she didn’t expect them to enter an arrangement that they hadn’t agreed to in the first place.

Who was the father of the twins?

The twist in Just Alice is revealed at the very end of the final episode. Alicia was carrying twins, but she refused to take a DNA test to find out who the father of the children was. She didn’t care because she loved both the men equally, and she believed they both deserved to be fathers. She had done a few tests during her pregnancy, and the doctor revealed that he’d also conducted a DNA test (possibly because Alejo had been persistent about knowing if he was the biological father). The result left Alicia surprised, but the show chooses not to reveal what was on the report until the very end. Pablo and Alejo discovered that they were among the 1% of the rare cases of hetero-paternity. The twins had different biological fathers, and therefore they were half-siblings from birth. Alicia chose to keep the information a secret until she gave birth, because she needed to process it herself. She had chosen to raise her twins on her own, and she feared that the truth would’ve stopped her lovers from following the paths that they’d chosen for themselves. She didn’t wish to burden them with expectations, so instead of acting on the information she’d just received, she chose to write a book about her experience as a woman who dared to love two men at the same time and was unapologetic about it. Her book had generated interest even before it was published. Everyone wanted to know Alicia’s story, and she’d become quite a revolutionary figure—women looked up to her because she refused to be shamed for doing what she thought was right instead of doing what was moralistically expected of her. Her story encouraged more women to think beyond monogamous relationships and to cater first to their feelings and desires instead of fearing the prejudice they might be subjected to.

Alicia wanted Pablo and Alejo to find out the truth at her book launch, and she convinced Alejo’s son, Benjamin, and Pablo’s brother, Samuel, to bring them to the launch. The men were thrilled to see Alicia succeed, and when her water broke on the stage, they rushed to hold her hands. Pablo and Alejo stayed beside Alicia when she gave birth, and they held the newborns with love and admiration. After giving birth, when Alicia handed them the test result, the men chose not to look at it. They didn’t care to find out which of the twins was their biological child, because they had accepted that they were fathers to both of them. Alicia was glad that they could finally move beyond technicalities and focus solely on the love they shared.

What does the future have in store for the trio?

Just Alice’s ending also revealed that Alicia had been secretly helping Pablo and Alejo because she loved them and she wanted them to succeed in the lives that they’d chosen for themselves. Alicia had donated money to the foundation Pablo was in charge of. She had also written to the archbishop and sent him a portfolio summarizing all the work Pablo had done in the neighborhood with the foundation. Pablo had been invited to the Vatican to discuss his work with the pope, and all this while he thought it was just his mere luck. But when Samuel revealed that his guardian angel was actually Alicia, he was taken by surprise. He realized that her feelings for him had always been true and she didn’t do it to be appreciated and loved but simply because she cared about him. Alicia had used the money she received as royalties from her first book and paid off Alejo’s entire debt. He was free, all thanks to her. Now, although Alicia claimed to have done all of it because she loved them and she just wanted to find a way to make things right with them, it’s hard not to admit that it wasn’t completely selfless. The fact that she’d told Samuel about how she’d helped Pablo, and the same goes for Alejo, whose former editor and son knew that Alicia had cleared his debts, suggests that deep down she expected them to find out about it and be forever grateful to her. There’s nothing wrong with that; she deserved to be appreciated for the lengths she went for them, but her benevolence was pitched a little too generously. In the final scene, Pablo and Alejo visited the twins. A year had passed, and we learned that every other week the fathers showed up to spend time with their children. Alicia missed having Pablo and Alejo as husbands, but she was glad that she took the risk of loving them both, because at the end of the day her sons got two fathers who loved them with all their hearts. Pablo and Alejo will continue to pursue the paths that they’ve chosen. Pablo has already attained priesthood and he will likely gain prominence globally as a dedicated social worker, and Alejo has been appointed an ambassador and he was clearly doing a great job as a diplomat. Alejo might well fall in love again, but that won’t impact his relationship with his sons. He’d missed out on watching Benjamin grow up, so there is no way he is going to lose out on the opportunity at being a doting father.

Will The Show return with season 2?

Just Alice ends on a happy note, and if there is an upcoming season, then we can expect Alicia to fall in love again. She is single, and it is only obvious that she’ll continue searching for the right partner, someone who’ll not be envious of her relationship with Pablo and Alejo, and perhaps who’ll agree to be in an open relationship. Now, I can already imagine that Pablo and Alejo will have a hard time adjusting to Alicia’s partner, not because they’re still in love with her, but possibly because they wouldn’t be comfortable with having another man around their children. It’s going to be difficult, but Alicia always finds a way to make things work! So, hopefully, even if the family expands, they would always have love for one another. The ending of season one also suggested that Marcelo likely won the elections, which suggests that there will be unrest in the Saint Trinidad neighborhood and Pablo will have to protect his people, and this time Alicia will boldly stand by him and support him in every way possible. In the second season, we can also expect Susana to finally find the love of her life, and this time she will hopefully not run away if things get a little challenging.
